3 Message from the Principal As a leading non-local degree programme operator in Hong Kong, SHAPE is committed to nurturing talents for Hong Kong through promoting higher education. Here at SHAPE, a wide array of choices are offered to sub-degree holders who aspire to pursue degree qualifications. Leaping forward to another decade of our establishment, SHAPE keeps on forging new partnerships and fostering closer links with our international partners. In collaboration with our new partner, University of Lincoln, the United Kingdom, two new programmes on BA (Hons) Architecture and BA (Hons) Design for Exhibition and Museums have recently launched, broadening the programme choices for sub-degree holders from the Design Discipline. There is another new programme on BA (Hons) Business (with Law) offered by one of our long-term strategic partners, University of Northumbria at Newcastle. It opens up the progression pathway to sub-degree holders who have an aspiration for a career in the legal profession. It has always been SHAPE s mission to offer a valued choice for sub-degree graduates. The quality of our programmes can be assured as we have the highest number of accredited programmes pitched at Level 5 of the Qualifications Framework among all the non-local course operators. This recognition will double the benefit of your degree study at SHAPE as, on the one hand, you will enjoy the same qualification as the resident graduates of the partner university, and on the other, your qualification is comparable to a locally-accredited bachelor s degree qualification. In addition to our quality programme, your learning experience will definitely be enhanced by our purpose-built and thriving campuses. We have strong learning support to guide you through your brief but rewarding year of studying. Our highly internationalized teaching team will also add value to your learning experience. We are designers working in design studios to create imaginative and practical building designs. History, theory, construction and environment studios are largely integrated with a range of design projects. We encourage a co-operative and productive environment for sharing ideas, techniques and experience which supports students in discovering their own approach to design. The aim is to help students acquire a complete tool kit of skills for architectural design and production. From the outset, students learn to apply drawing techniques to the investigation and communication of architectural design, alongside computer-aided design and hands-on modelling and construction. Our excellent workshop facilities have lasercutting and rapid-prototyping equipment for exploratory work supported by highly-skilled technical staff. Our diverse teaching staff encompasses individuals with a range of international qualifications, and experience devoted to practise-based and research-engaged teaching. The University s School of Architecture and Design is committed to socially and environmentally sustainable development, both locally and globally, and we aim to equip our graduates with the analytical and design skills to match up to the challenges of future architectural practice. 32 University of Lincoln BA (Hons) Design for Exhibition and Museums Registration Number (Non-Local Higher and Professional Education (Registration) Ordinance): University of Lincoln The University of Lincoln s award-winning city centre campus provides a modern student-centred environment. We constantly invest in our facilities to provide the best learning environment for our students. Research underpins the student experience at the University of Lincoln. Lincoln provides the perfect historic setting in which to investigate and study architecture and design. Programme Overview PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The subject of Design for Exhibition and Museums is about creating exciting and engaging three-dimensional, communicative environments. It is all about storytelling, whether this is of a brand, a collection or an idea. By using a multidisciplinary approach that includes aspects of interior, graphic, product and communication design, exhibition designers construct a narrative that acts as an interpretive bridge between the expert or client and their audience. We focus on the interests of two areas of economic and cultural activity; the commercial exhibitions industry and the museum and heritage sectors. Both areas are global in scope and subject to extremely rapid growth and change, particularly in Hong Kong and China. Clients and audiences demand exhibitions that provide an engaging, informative and thoroughly immersive experience. We have a track record of developing our students the interdisciplinary creative thinking and knowledge of new technologies, which are key to succeeding in this field. Our students learn how to understand and interpret particular messages for different audience types, from general visitor groups in museums or heritage environments, to technically sophisticated individuals at trade-only and special interest exhibitions. We have a sustainability and access agenda that informs all fields of exhibition design and has a central place in the ethos of the course. This is a unique course, with a strong vocational nature and the high employability levels for its graduates. It takes a studiobased approach that mirrors the design practice environment, where students make, think and draw together, using both analogue and digital technologies. The ephemeral nature of the discipline has to its constant change and evolution over many years and all our students are welcomed into a long established international family of working designers.
