2 Eligibility continued Marquette University Educational Opportunity Programs Pre College Division Upward Bound (UB) is a pre-college program that prepares high school students to enter and successfully complete college. The program works with students, their parent(s), and their school to help develop the selfconfidence, self-discipline, and the responsibility needed to build a strong foundation for high school, college, and life. Preparing students to enter and successfully complete college, it offers specialized classes, tutorials, college placement assistance, career development labs, personal counseling, and social/cultural activities and trips. Students are recruited from the Milwaukee area during their eighth grade year. Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS), like UB, prepares high school students to enter and successfully complete college and works with students, their parent(s), and their school to help develop the self-confidence, self-discipline, and responsibility you will need to build a strong foundation for high school, college, and life. UBMS is designed for students with a serious interest in math and science careers. UBMS offers specialized math, science, writing, and technology classes, tutorials, college placement assistance, career development, personal counseling, and social/cultural activities and trips. The program includes a summer component, with students staying on campus for six weeks each summer, and a school-year component. Applicants for this program should be in the ninth grade. Enrollment is limited and preference given to those students who demonstrate strong motivation to learn, a good record of academic achievement, and the intent to graduate from college. In addition, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria. Low Income OR First Generation 1. You live within the target area, which is defined by the following zip codes: 53204, 53205, 53206, 53208, 53209, 53210, 53212, 53215, 53216, 53218, and The Application Process Upon receipt of a complete application, a counselor from the pre-college division will contact applicants for a student interview and testing. Each student sits for an interview with pre-college staff members to discuss her desire to be in the program, motivation, and college plans. In addition, every applicant takes a math and/or reading test to assess ability. Of the two, the interview is the way we determine a student s willingness to participate in our program and motivation to succeed academically. Testing assists us with creating future programming for students. Families are notified via mail concerning all admission decisions; thus decisions will not be discussed over the phone before students receive such notification. Stressing the importance of good nutrition we have a summer food service program and offer the meals to all our participants. If your child is accepted into Upward Bound or Upward Bound Math and Science program he will receive the benefits of the Summer Food Service Program funded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the WI Department of Public Instruction. Meals will be available at no charge during our summer program. We accept applications from October 1 st March 15 th and schedule interviews individually, notifying students of our admission decision in both January and April.
