4 Academic Affairs Cross Functional Goals Vision and Mission Future Directions Position vision and mission for academic affairs to reflect current beliefs and aspirations for the future in light of current challenges and opportunities and with a focus on strengthening a culture of innovation. The Academic Affairs team will provide compelling, innovative, and transformative educational experiences of the highest quality, within an ever-changing educational landscape. Academic Innovation College Connections The College Connections program will improve the efficiency of program operations, expand opportunities available to students in current partner schools, explore opportunities to engage new partner schools, and support the enrollment goals of the college. Engage students through high school visits that will connect them to JCC and assist them with educational planning and navigating the post-secondary education system. Explore possibility of expanding online course offerings through collaboration with New York State Community Colleges. Enhance discipline-specific new instructor training. Expand customized enrollment management system to include additional high schools. Experiential Learning The office of experiential learning will improve internal and external systems to provide more students access to well-planned, supervised, and assessed experiential learning programs. Develop regional/national internship programs (including SUNY s InternShop) for implementation at Jamestown Community College. Develop new international internships for Jamestown Community College students. Provide leadership and support for faculty initiatives to develop/enhance undergraduate research opportunities. Assure compliance with the SUNY Applied/Experiential Learning Initiative. Develop greater awareness of experiential learning through social media development. Diversify major/disciplines engaged in job shadowing and workplace tours. P a g e 3

5 Global Initiatives The office of international outreach will further globalize the JCC experience by increasing the number of international students enrolled and strengthening the systems related to study abroad and international student support. International Outreach JCC s office of international outreach engages global partners and recruits and supports international students who will globalize the campus experience for all while supporting the college s enrollment goals. Study Abroad JCC provides short-term, semester, yearlong, and summer study abroad and internship opportunities that combine academic rigor with experiential learning through immersion in an international setting. Increase international student enrollment by 25%. (2015 enrollment 20 students; target enrollment for ). Establish the international office as a centralized coordinating hub for global initiatives on campus. Expand regional partnerships that support study abroad and international student recruitment. Explore specific strategies to attract students from the Canadian market. Honors The honors program will improve systems and processes that broaden student options and increase the number of students completing the program. Identify and implement strategies to enhance course offerings and engagement opportunities for Olean and Dunkirk-based students. Develop an online honors program orientation to complement in-person sessions. Identify strategies to promote social engagement and build a community of scholars among honors students. Academic Policies Academic Standings Committee Review and clarify the mission and duties of the Academic Standings Committee. Academic Retention Facilitate a process involving faculty which creates and implements a series of strategies designed to foster student success and completion. Academic Affairs will develop and implement a series of high impact classroom and academic program retention strategies which will improve completion and success rates. Specify those on which the committee will lead and those on which the committee with monitor the progress of others. Guide efforts to identify, monitor, and publicize data which measures student success and the effectiveness of career pathways strategies as they are adopted. P a g e 4

6 Assessment To refine institutional assessment processes with a focus on closing the loop on dissemination and use of results and on the links between assessment planning, and budgeting. Institutional Assessment Create and maintain a system to support the creation and assessment of learning outcomes which occurs outside the structure of credit courses. Student Learning Outcomes Refine curriculum maps to make them more useful, with the aim of improving student learning. Improve data-gathering techniques for assessment results, with the aim of allowing the focus to shift to planning before and analysis after the fact. Modify the program review preliminary report template to include analysis of coverage of infused general education outcomes (technological competency, critical reasoning, and information literacy) within the program. Community Cultural Center Galleries Theater Continue to build partnerships and enhance internal and external partnerships with particular focus on globalization. Create a new technical theater class: LIVE EVENT PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT. Upgrade current sound equipment in the Scharmann Theatre. Enhance both student participation and committee input. Curriculum Innovation Create and implement a flexible and coherent structure for facilitating the process of curriculum innovation at the program, project, and partnership level. Academic Program/Model Development Academic Affairs will prioritize, support, and invest in an array of high quality, viable academic programs across sites which address student and community needs. Technology-Enhanced Instruction The TEI team will enhance the tools and services which support learning technologies for all teaching environments. Increase student persistence in online and ITV courses through the use of faculty and student supports. Increase awareness and implementation of open educational resources (OER) in the classroom. Develop a five-year ITV plan. Develop a service catalog to identify the various services provided in support of technology-enhanced instruction. P a g e 5

7 Curriculum Committee Research most effective methods and best practices for course description development and develop guidelines (moved from goals). Have a conversation about Gen Ed requirements for Certificates. Explore how the Teagle Grant initiative could impact the curriculum. Explore the impact of Career Pathways on the curriculum. General Education Committee Work with faculty, administration, and staff as appropriate to generate an updated structure of the college s general education requirements as supported by the findings of the Teagle review. Refine assessment of infused and tagged outcomes (information literacy, technological competency, critical reasoning, scientific reasoning, and values, ethics, and diverse perspectives). Developmental Studies Evaluate and revise program processes and address specific course needs. Broaden offering of innovated course models for Developmental Studies Program core courses. Implement and track new Developmental Studies Program placement criteria. Research and integrate alternative measures for assessing student course placement in addition to placement tests. Support for Other Locations Identify product development strategies to support the viability of the Cattaraugus County Campus. Seek opportunities to optimize course offerings at the North County Extension Site. Faculty Strength and Support Review and analyze the Changing Roles of Faculty and implement appropriate follow-up strategies. Committee for Excellence in Learning/Teaching (CELT) Delineate a specific role in the professional development of faculty in relation to other entities of the college with faculty development as a goal. Identify high impact areas of faculty development and have those areas guide our efforts. Define a specific role in the professional development of adjunct faculty. Institutional Research Facilitate the increased use of evidence in strategic decision making. Create, administer, and report on an annual student survey which consolidates questions asked for several FARs. Create an academic standing, applied learning, and campus life dashboard. Restructure publication of the performance indicators and increase the usefulness of the information. Libraries Develop a Libraries Master Plan document. P a g e 6

8 Arts, Humanities, and Health Sciences A.A. Humanities English, Modern Languages, & Philosophy Composition Sequence: Review and update existing composition sequence. Area Mission and Vision: Develop an area-specific mission and vision to aid in long-term planning. Institute strategies and assessments throughout the language curriculum based upon the ACTFL World Readiness Standards. Research and develop strategies that will better support ELI students. A.A. Global Studies Increase enrollment: Determine ways to increase program enrollments in Cattaraugus County specifically, and across the institution students enrolled by Spring Assure program relevance and quality: Update program materials to meet current practice, research transfer, research technological needs, and consider new directions. Develop sustainable models for new GLS courses in Africana and Asian studies: Determine best practice for supporting these interdisciplinary, team-taught courses. A.S. Communications Develop 2 strong experiential learning opportunities for CMM students. Develop 1 new multi-disciplinary use for the television studio to expand utilization of facility. Pilot a new advising technology acuity scheduling. Music Programs A.S. Fine Arts: Music Certificate Digital Audio Production Establish an articulation agreement in music with Buffalo State College. Assess and analyze the potential for the development of a new program or programs, and begin such development if possible. Examine program SLOs for both the Fine Arts: Music degree and the Certificate in Digital Audio Production, and revise them where necessary. Examine course SLOs from all required MUS courses from both programs, revising them where necessary. For the Certificate in Digital Audio Production, create an external Advisory Board made up of industry professionals and experts from the surrounding region. Studio Arts Programs A.S. Fine Arts: Studio Art Certificate Digital Graphic Design and Publishing Certificate Multimedia Production Conduct program structure review. Devise a marketing and recruitment plan. Research and develop new courses. P a g e 7

9 A.S. Media Arts Conduct a program review. Integrate and mentor new faculty member into the program including scheduling, advising, and other coordinator responsibilities. A.S. Physical Education Develop a course option to fulfill the Exercise Physiology course requirement for the PE SUNY transfer pathway. Research the development of a Personal Trainer certificate program. A.A.S. Nursing Implement the new 64-credit curriculum on the sophomore level in Fall 2016 and Spring Complete the final edits of their assigned standards and criteria for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) self-study report by November 1, Complete final preparations for ACEN and New York State Education Department (NYSED) visits in January or February of A.A.S. Occupational Therapy Assistant Explore the feasibility of offering a Mental Health CPR course to OTA students and area clinicians. Execute the experiential learning initiatives outlined in the ARC grant. Explore the possibility of developing a system for leadership badging and/or certificate in leadership for OTA students. 10 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics A.S. Biotechnology Explore adding a new section of Microbiology for Biotechnology, Environmental Science, and Math/Science majors. Rewrite Biotechnology assessments to make them Blackboard compatible. Computer and Information Sciences Programs A.S. Computer Science A.A.S. Computer Information Systems A.A.S. Information Technology Certificate Information Technology Certificate Network Administration Certificate Web Design In concert with the web content manager and marketing and web staff, further develop and improve the computer and information sciences web pages. Investigate the use of badging and other credentialing opportunities to expand the possibilities for students that may want to obtain certain knowledge or skills without pursuing a formal academic degree or certificate program. Investigate tools designed to collate assessment data across multiple course sections. Engineering Science & Technology Programs A.S. Engineering Science A.A.S. Mechanical Technology A.A.S. and Certificate Welding Technology Certificate Computer-Aided Design & Computer Numerical Control Certificate Industrial Equipment Technology Certificate Machine Tool Technology Facilitate completion and use of the expanded MTI facility in Jamestown, which is scheduled to be totally available for use by the end of September Implement and monitor coursework/facilities related to the four certificate programs to be offered at the new MTI facility on the Cattaraugus County Campus. Pursue the development of new programs that align with the new/expanded MTI facilities. Purchase welding equipment for the new Olean MTI building. Hire adjunct faculty to teach the new welding courses at the Olean facility. Implement new equipment in the MTI facility in Jamestown. Recruit in Agriculture programs within Chautauqua and Cattaraugus county high school programs for welding students. A.S. Environmental Science Explore ways to better incorporate and sustain GIS components in the Environmental Science curriculum. Explore the possibility of registering the Environmental Science degree on the Cattaraugus County campus. P a g e 9

11 A.S., A.A.S., and Certificate Individual Studies Provide a system for Individual Studies students, working with their advisor, to (1) create an academic plan, (2) modify their academic plan as needed, and (3) track progress on their academic plan. Develop a formal process to help guide Individual Studies students into specific degree programs at JCC if these degree programs are better choices for the students academic goals. A.S. Liberal Arts & Sciences: Mathematics and Science Science Pilot interventions to improve learning and retention in BIO 2510: Anatomy & Physiology I at the North County Extension Center. Review the array of science course offerings (content, format, campus location, etc.) to align better with student needs and make efficient use of resources as we adjust to a shrinking pool of students pursuing a science major, as well as with students fulfilling general elective requirements. Mathematics Refresh or rebuild the online section of MAT 1540 to update best practices and ensure accessibility. Review developmental math curriculum and pathway approaches, and implement changes as appropriate. Investigate experiential learning opportunities in mathematics. A.A.S. Professional Piloting Schedule necessary courses to allow students currently in the Professional Piloting program to complete all requirements in the allotted timeframe. Work with Prior Aviation and Rochester Air Center to ensure that all students are able to continue their flight training unless and until all students wither drop out of the program or complete degree requirements. Work with students and parents to give students currently in the program every opportunity to complete degree requirements. P a g e 10

Business Accounting Certificate Entrepreneurship Prioritize and follow through with recommendations from ENT Certificate Program Review including gathering data from existing students, generating entrepreneurship awareness across campuses and various marketing strategies. Work with Transfer Institutions to enhance opportunities for business students to transfer ex. Penn State Behrend. Promote Leadership Development Course and experiential learning opportunities to BUS Degree students. Criminal Justice Programs A.S. Criminal Justice A.A.S. Criminal Justice Police Certificate Corrections Officer Technology Certificate Law Enforcement Technology Explore options to market the Criminal Justice program, which includes webpage updates. Pending the sale of the Sheldon house, discuss options for relocation of CSI house. A.S. and A.A.S. Human Services Increase the number of web-based courses offered in Obtain SUNY approval for A.S. & Certificate in Addictions Counseling. Explore transfer possibilities and articulation agreements for graduates of the A.S. Addictions Counseling Degree Program. A.A. Social Sciences At least three disciplines in the Social Sciences offering research opportunities. Offer at least one research-based course for remedial students. Expand local and international internship offerings to afford interested students additional opportunities to apply their learning in public settings. Expand offerings of one-credit courses. Devise and implement a plan to change the name of the Office Technology, A.A.S. and Certificate programs.
