1 STUDENT SERVICES OFFICER Post: Temporary, hours per week, term-time only This is a temporary post for hours per week, preferably divided over three days, although 2 or 4 days could be considered. The post is for term time only (38 weeks). The vacancy in Student Services is for a flexible and adaptable person who is able to respond to the demands of an expanding and developing service. The main responsibilities include assisting in finding suitable work placements for students and will involve: discussing placements with students finding suitable placements for students on A level or AS courses eg Health & Care, Science and Law arranging placements with employers carrying out the relevant administration The person appointed will need to have excellent communication skills at all levels, be confident and preferably have a knowledge of advanced level education. It would be helpful if the successful candidate is suitably qualified / experienced to offer advice and guidance and contribute to the Careers programme for students. 2 STUDENT SERVICES OFFICER Terms of Employment General Conditions of employment for support staff are as agreed between the Sixth Form Conditions Colleges Association and staff representatives at national level in addition to terms agreed at local level. Start Date As soon as possible Status Temporary part-time post in the College s Support Staff structure until 14 th July 2015, pending a possible review of the department structure during the summer term 2015 Hours of work hours per week, term time, preferably over 3 days (Wednesday and/or Friday preferred) with times subject to negotiation. Pensions Support staff will be automatically brought into the Local Government Pension Scheme, administered by Worcestershire County Council. Where the contract of employment is for less than 3 months, there is the opportunity to opt to join by completing an application form. Contributions are banded and further information is available under Holidays As a term-time employee, the leave entitlement is paid as part of salary and all annual leave is taken during College holidays. Full year employees receive 25 working days plus 8 public holidays. There is an entitlement to an additional 5 days holiday after 5 years continuous service. Pay Child Protection/ Safeguarding Equality and Diversity Salary for 18 hours per week will be 6,618-7,068 based on the Sixth Form Colleges Support Staff Pay Spine points (currently 16,327-17,436 per annum for a full-time, full year post). Appointment will be to point 18 unless the applicant is suitably qualified and/or has considerable relevant experience. A term-time factor is used to calculate salary, which is spread equally throughout the year. The College and all its personnel are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young persons and vulnerable adults. This position is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Where you have lived overseas in the last 5 years the College is required to evidence an overseas check in addition to the DBS check. 3 STUDENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT Head of Student Services: Pauline Mason The staff of the College s Student Services section work as an integrated and flexible team to support the pastoral guidance and tutorial systems of the College. The main aim of the section is to contribute to the personal development of students through an expanding range of services. Currently its main priority is to enhance careers education and guidance, employer and community links and counselling. Student Services also supports the tutorial programme throughout the year and organises Careers, Employment and Higher Education Events for parents and students. Student Services offers a full programme of individual guidance interviews and support plus specialist extended careers programmes to support applications to a variety of professions. All students are given the opportunity to participate in Work Experience either as part of a vocational course or as an optional addition to their timetable to help with career decisions. A professional counselling service is available to all students and staff in the College. There is a dedicated room for counselling within Student Services. All counselling is on a self-referral basis although students may be advised to seek professional counselling. Student Services benefits from the involvement of outside agencies, including health, faith, volunteering and financial support. Student Services offers spacious, attractive and purposeful accommodation to students and staff. It has a very well stocked Resources Centre, a main teaching area with tutorial and consultation rooms as well as offices for staff. A drop in enquiry and reception service is available throughout the day. Student Services also works closely with the Worcestershire Education Business Partnership and the Worcestershire Primary Care Trust, the Engagement Team and a range of employers and HEIs.
4 JOB DESCRIPTION It must be recognised that this job description is likely to change as the circumstances of the College change and the post holder must recognise and actively adapt to these changes as they affect the job described. JOB TITLE: JOB PURPOSE: RESPONSIBLE TO: Student Services Officer To arrange and administer placements for students on Work Experience and to provide Information, Advice and Guidance Head of Student Services MAJOR TASKS 1. To discuss the placement and assignment requirements for vocational placements with staff and students as appropriate. 2. To arrange and monitor appropriate Work Experience placements for identified groups and for individual students. 3. To type and distribute documents for selected Work Experience placements including letters, forms, lists, information sheets and booklets for employers and students. To provide details of relevant placements to departments and others as required. 4. To verify parental consent forms, student agreement forms, insurance forms as required and to advise Student Services Advisers and Head of Student Services of responses. 5. To help maintain and update databases of placement information. 6. To develop and extend contacts with employers, HEI s and the community including voluntary organisations. 7. To evaluate aspects of the Work Experience programmes and contribute to the self-assessment procedures, and to respond to complaints and disciplinary issues with support from senior staff 8. To offer drop-in advice and guidance on a self referral basis and in response to self referrals including HE support. 9. To organise, promote and accompany trips for students as appropriate 10. To organise and promote activities for students including careers and work-related activities and volunteering. 11. To deliver presentations to groups of students as required. 12. To contribute to other specific projects for which Student Services is responsible. General Responsibilities 1. To be responsible for and committed to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children, young persons and vulnerable adults whether responsible for, or in contact with them. 2. To observe the College Health and Safety policy at all times, taking responsibility within own areas as set out in the policy.
5 3. To be fully aware of and implement College policies relating to equality and diversity and actively promote positive practice. 4. To comply with all other College policies and procedures. 5. To undertake personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the position and to participate in appropriate training activities. 6. To undertake any other duties commensurate with this post as the Principal may from time to time decide.
