It is expected that credit transfer will be accomplished for most of the students who participated in exchanges during AY2013. We are in the process of adjusting common standards for grade management systems following the rules of UCTS. High-Quality Teaching At the 2nd Quality Assurance Committee Meeting, the member universities discussed assessment standards for comprehensive generic skills of students, such as 1. English proficiency, 2. intercultural knowledge competence, 3. fundamental competencies for working persons and 4. communication and, presentation capacity, as well as credit transfer and grade management. Criteria for 2. were created based on the American standard, VALUE Rubric. Criteria for 3. were developed based on the Japanese standards established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. All member universities have agreed to develop their own criteria reflecting the characteristics of their own ASEAN country Program Contents, Preparation for the Start of the Programs Fostering Human Resources through the Industry of Central Japan The member universities have highly rated a program that includes corporate internship based around Nagoya, home of the largest-scale industry in Asia (Toyota Motor Corp., etc.). Three member universities have additionally asked to join the internship program in AY2014. SEND (Student Exchange Nippon Discovery) Activities The students who experienced the SEND short-term program were motivated to learn even more in the long-term program, which is exactly what we hoped for the Campus ASEAN project. The students who joined the SEND long-term outbound program achieved great results in their coursework and internships at host universities. They learned the local languages, which helped them to introduce Japanese culture and language. In AY2013, 56 Japanese students were sent to member universities, which exceeded the original plan. The number of participants for the Field Work in Cambodia has also increased. The number of SEND-related students was 16. In AY2013, 26 students from the member universities were hosted by Nagoya University, though the planned number was 48. However, the number of participants in AY2014 will increase because of the Outbound fruitful internship program conducted in collaboration with industries. Inbound Promotion of Student Mobility Environment Preparation for Japanese Students Nagoya University has offered Academic English courses since AY2009. Program orientation and pre-training were held for the Japanese students in the SEND program in AY2012 and To improve the environment of information-sharing, Nagoya University Collaboration and course Tools (NUCT) and the Free Cloud service have been effectively utilized. These tools help establish student support systems, including risk management. Participants of both the Inbound and Outbound programs will increase this year thanks to the experiences of AY2013 students being shared at the Students Forum. Note : FY2012, 2013 actual results, FY planned Preparation for Students from Member Universities Teaching Assistants will be assigned to help non-japanese students with particular learning needs. Advice and counseling services are available on campus. Around 80 new student accommodations will be made available. The program secretariat is constantly exploring internship opportunities for participants in this Program. 5 FY2013 Re-Inventing Japan Project Name of project (Adopted year: FY2012, Category II ) Cyclical Educational Program for Human Resources Development through Multi-faceted Exchanges by Utilizing Japanese Language Education This educational program has been established in response to the diversification of Japanese language learners and their educational needs both inside and outside Japan. By promoting personnel exchanges and the rotation of personnel through various roles, we train both Japanese language instructors capable of accommodating a variety of students as well as individuals with practical Japanese language skills who can thrive in a wide variety of fields. We provide Waseda students majoring or minoring in Japanese language education with the opportunity to have practical training in Japanese language education outside Japan (overseas field work). This also promotes student exchange programs by providing practical Japanese language education to students majoring in the Japanese language at international institutions. Establishment of Joint Program Committee We set up a joint program committee comprising Waseda University and partner universities to discuss courses, the care of students, and methods of evaluating joint programs. Establishment of Joint Advisory Committee We set up a joint advisory committee comprising Waseda University, all partner universities and the outside experts to share and evaluate the activities of the project, which contributed to the improvement of the quality and the management of the program next year. Academic results management & recognition of credits Attainment targets and academic assessment methods of credits were presented to students in syllabuses in advance, and a system of class evaluation by students had been introduced. We also promoted the mutual recognition of credits earned through student exchange programs. <Tea Ceremony at Padjadjaran University> Sending Waseda students to institutions outside Japan Waseda s 10 graduate students in the Practical Japanese Language Education and Research (Overseas Field Work) course and 31 undergraduate students in the Overseas Field Work course,a university-wide minor of the Practical Japanese Language Education and Research course were sent to partners universities overseas. Admission of International Students 56 Undergraduate students studying the Japanese language at overseas partner universities were admitted to the Short-term Japanese Language Program at Waseda to develop practical Japanese language skills. WASEDA University Overseas Field Work for Waseda students Waseda s graduate/undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Japanese language education were sent to each partner university on the program to be a cadet teacher or teaching assistant in Japanese classes at the local institution. In addition to the teaching experience, the students promoted cultural exchange, introducing Japanese traditional culture such as Tea Ceremony and Calligraphy to the local students. Courses offered at Waseda for international students from overseas partner universities We offered undergraduate courses for practical Japanese to students learning Japanese language at overseas universities. We also provided the students opportunities for cultural exchange and interaction through Tea Ceremony and a short trip with Waseda students. Outbound Inbound Note: FY results, FY planned. Support for students before coming to Japan and orientations post-arrival to and pre-departure from Japan Students enrolled at Waseda are given support regarding their preparations to visit Japan, and once they have arrived, are given orientation to support them in living and studying in Japan. The students are given another orientation session before they leave Japan on the procedure for having the credits they received at Waseda recognized by their home institution. Expansion of partnership Facing difficulties such as the lack of Japanese language study section s capacity at overseas partners to accommodate the planned number of students sent from Waseda, we have started to seek possible partner institutions to secure the learning environment for the students. Publishing information on the Internet and presenting research outcomes via an international consortium Introductions to participating universities, details of the programs' content, and the experiences of students who participated in the programs are published on Waseda's website. At the same time, research outcomes are presented at an international conference held by an international consortium of which Waseda University is a member.
