3 Subject Selection for Year The Year 11 curriculum allows students to select from a broad range of units. Careful consideration throughout the subject selection process is crucial to ensure students map their individual pathways appropriately. The selection process is as follows:

4 Year 11 Subject Selection Process Step 1: Curriculum Information Night for parents and students currently in Years 9 and 10, Wednesday July 26, 7:30 8:30pm Step 2: VCE Taster Day for Year 10 students. Friday July 28. Step 3: Subject Selection discussion during Pastoral Group and students receive Subject Selection username/password, early Term 3 Step 4: Subject & Tertiary Expo, Thursday August 3, 3:00-8:00pm Step 5: Subject selection online, completed by Friday August 11.

5 Year 11 Blockings Each individual block represents a semester unit. The last block, Religion, runs for the entire year (but with only three periods per cycle). 6 Year 12 Blockings The blocking remains similar in Year 12, however, generally a student only has 5 subjects plus RE in Yr this means that one of the subjects from Yr. 11 can not be continued. 8 How do I get there? Satisfactory completion of (minimum) 16 VCE or VET Units Including at least 3 English units. Including a Unit 3/4 sequence in an English. Three other Unit 3/4 sequences. (VCE Victorian Certificate of Education) (VET Vocational Education & Training)

10 The GAT General Achievement Test All students who study a Unit 3/4 sequence are required to undertake the GAT It is a test of general knowledge and skills across a variety of key learning areas Important roles - It allows for a derived score to be calculated in exceptional circumstances (think of it as a type of insurance) - It helps the school to analyse student assessments, on a whole school level Try your best but do not study beyond what is covered at school

11 English Options Year 11 The study of an English is the only compulsory subject for inclusion in your VCE ATAR score. Students may choose ONE or TWO of the following options: Mainstream English Literature English Language

12 English Options Year 11 MAINSTREAM ENGLISH Similar to English in Years Incorporates a text study, a comparative text study and a creative response, and usage/analysis of persuasive language. LITERATURE Requires a close analysis of a range of literature and a creative response to a literary text. Students should enjoy reading and responding to a broad range of literary texts including novels, plays, short stories, poetry and film. ENGLISH LANGUAGE Focuses on analysing and understanding English language. Emphasis on language, communication and language change. There are no set texts. Students work with a variety of text types.

Disadvantages No Mathematics You are strongly advised to study both Units 1 & 2 to be prepared for Units 3&4 (Legal Studies p. 37 Curriculum Guide) What combination of subjects is most beneficial for you?

May not suit students who are unsure about their post-school destination

26 ATAR and scaling overview VCAA Responsible for assessment of studies Determines performance of individuals in each study Produces raw Study Score (mean = 30) VTAC Calculates ATAR based on Study Scores, so need to ensure a 30 in one study = 30 in all others Adjusts study scores by looking at competition (scaling) ATAR Based on scaled Study Scores, ensuring that students are not advantaged or disadvantaged because of their subject choice

30 What is VCAL? The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is an alternative pathway to VCE It is a hands-on certificate that prepares Year 11 & 12 students for work, apprenticeships and/or further study

31 Who is VCAL for? Students who are keen to engage and explore work and life options in a hands-on way Students looking for a more innovative and dynamic learning experience Students considering going on to training at TAFE, doing an apprenticeship, traineeship or getting a job.

32 What does VCAL give you? VCAL gives you practical work-related experience A certificate and a statement of results on successful completion A qualification that is recognised by TAFE institutes and employers

34 VCAL at Mater Christi Year 11 students undertake their Foundation or Intermediate Level VCAL Year 12 students undertake their Senior Level VCAL Students will combine VCAL and VET subjects within their program Students are at school for 3 days at all levels of VCAL
