3 Four Pillars of Guided Pathways

4 CA Guided Pathways Demonstration Project Supports California community colleges implement an integrated, institution-wide approach to student success by creating structured educational experiences that support each student from point of entry to attainment of high-quality postsecondary credentials and careers Built on an organizational learning model of six institutes, plus coaching AACC National Project includes three California colleges Bakersfield College, Irvine Valley, Mt. SAC

5 Project Partners Under the fiscal agency of the Foundation for California Community Colleges, with support from College Futures Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Teagle Foundation Guided by a broad-based advisory committee Draws on the expertise of national partners, including the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE), Community College Research Center (CCRC), National Center for Inquiry & Improvement (NCII), and WestEd

7 Relationship to the Proposed $150 million in State Funds The $150 million grant allows for one-time grants to colleges to integrate recent state investments and redesign academic pathways Chancellor s Office and the Board of Governors will be responsible for statewide implementation of the $150 million grant program Full details on the $150 million grant program will be known in late June when the state budget has been finalized Colleges will be able to participate in both initiatives (the Chancellor has encouraged colleges to consider applying to both)

8 Faculty Leadership in Guided Pathways Academic senates and faculty are critical to the success of guided pathways Efforts involve faculty at every stage and focus on areas of academic senate purview including, but not limited to: Curriculum Student preparation and support Educational program development Degree and certificate requirements Faculty professional development Academic senates must be in the lead, keep faculty at the core, and ensure that every decision is made in the best interest of students Faculty from all disciplines and programs need to be engaged in planning and implementation To successfully implement guided pathways, each college must own the process through deliberate dialogue and profound engagement

9 College Participation Selected through a competitive process Six two-day institutes that will focus on key elements required to implement a fully-scaled pathway model which serves all students at a community college Support on the change process from expert coaches Colleges pay a total of $45,000 over the three years, plus travel costs to the institutes (hotel costs and meals at the institutes will be covered by the project) which can be covered using funding from Chancellor s Office initiatives

10 Project Dates The institutes will be held during: September 2017 November 2017 February 2018 September 2018 January 2019 September 2019 Colleges are expected to implement guided pathways at scale by 2020

Processes for tracking and evaluating student learning outcomes 4. Description of efforts to improve completion of gateway courses, certificate and degrees, and transfer 5. Use of labor market information 6. Description of efforts to evaluate and improve equitable outcomes 7. Description of efforts to change internal policies and resource allocation 8. Description of efforts to implement guided pathways
