Abarca, Ph.D., MSW (562) Boston University Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program Sociology and Social Welfare San Francisco State University Master Degree in Social Welfare Social Development Concentration San Francisco State University Bachelor Degree in Social Welfare DISSERTATION SECURING WORK AND KEEPING THE FAMILY TOGETHER: A STUDY OF LATINO IMMIGRANTS IN NEW MEXICO This study analyses the labor and personal experience of immigrant Latinos employed in the contingent employment sector in the U.S. This sector of the labor market offers precarious labor conditions, low-wage and unstable jobs for these workers. In addition, their human capital (i.e. English proficiency, educational attainment, and employment history) may influence their participation in this sector. Furthermore, the families of these workers must employed specialized survival strategies to live on lowwages and uncertain employment conditions in New Mexico. By comparing employment offered by temporary employment agencies (Albuquerque) and those obtain by day laborers (Santa Fe), this study aims to analyze how local labor markets influence the increasing demand for short-term and sub-contract employment and its impact on immigrant Latino workers and their families. Further, this research examines the impact of receiving policies, including the issues of driver s licenses, access to preventive medical care, and bilingual education. The sample includes 28 immigrant workers, 11 families, and eight stakeholders. 1
