1 University Bursary and National Scholarship Programmes Terms and Conditions for Students Commencing their Programme of Study in Only 1. Assessment for bursary and scholarship eligibility 1.1 Bursaries and scholarships will be allocated to those students who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation. 1.2 Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee that a bursary or scholarship will be allocated, as there are limited numbers available. 1.3 Eligibility for a bursary or scholarship is assessed in level 4 only, and where practicable all assessments will have been made by 28th February The University is unable to re-consider a student s eligibility should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. 1.4 Students who have been assessed under a current year income assessment should contact Student Welfare for advice on how to proceed. 1.5 The University reserves the right to extend the deadline for consideration of late applications, if any bursaries or scholarships remain unallocated. 1.6 Applicants who defer their entry for a year will be considered for a bursary or scholarship in the year that they start their course, not the year of application apart from in the case of eligible Level 5 Social Work students, who will be assessed in Level Household income information will be collected from Student Finance for all full-time students. It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure that Student Finance have completed their income assessment prior to scholarships and bursaries being allocated between July and February. 1.8 Part-time students must contact Student Support and Guidance after they have enrolled on their programme of study (and as soon as possible within term 1) to request an income assessment so that their eligibility for a National Scholarship can be determined. Student Support and Guidance will send the student s details to Student Loans Company for a full income assessment to take place and students will be expected to submit all of the required evidence for this process to take place. 2. Foundation Degrees 2.1 Students who are studying on a two year Foundation Degree programme will receive their bursary payments for level 4 and 5 of their study only. 2.2 Eligible Students enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Policing, Law and Investigation will be eligible to receive a bursary payment in Level 4 of their
2 studies only. This is because of the different tuition fee arrangements for this programme of study. 3. European Students and National Scholarship Awards 3.1 Eligible EU students are entitled to the fee waiver element of the National Scholarship Award only. Therefore the entire benefit available to EU students is 3,000 fee waiver, which will be applied in year one. 4. Interruption of studies 4.1 Bursary payments will cease during any period of interruption and any remaining payments will be made on the student s return to university, in line with the bursary payment dates. 4.2 Fee waivers will be applied on a pro rata basis dependent upon when the student interrupts their studies and when they resume their programme of study. 5. Withdrawal from programme of study 5.1 If a student withdraws from their programme of study prior to receiving their full bursary payment, they will forfeit entitlement to any further bursary payments from the date of withdrawal. Fee waivers will be applied on a pro rata basis dependent upon the point in the academic year that the student withdraws. 6. Change of programme 6.1 Students in receipt of a bursary / National Scholarship award should inform Student Welfare if they change their programme of study. 6.2 If a student has been awarded a bursary or fee waiver and subsequently changes their programme (within the same academic year), and they remain on an eligible programme of study with no break in their studies, their fee waiver or bursary award will be transferred to their new programme of study. 6.3 If a student changes programme to an ineligible programme of study, they will not receive any further bursary payments, and their fee waiver will be applied on a pro-rata basis. 7. Re-admission to a new programme of study 7.1 If a student is re-admitted to a new programme of study, and they received a fee waiver or bursary in level 4 of their initial programme of study, their fee
3 waiver or bursary will be suspended until they have successfully progressed to level 5 of their programme of study, provided they remain on an eligible programme of study. 8. Transfer in from another institution 8.1 A student who transfers to the University of Chester at level 5 or 6 from another institution will not be eligible to be considered for the NSP, but may be eligible to be considered for the other bursary schemes. 9. Failure to progress to the next level of study 9.1 The fee waiver or bursary will be applied once in each progressive level of study. Students who take an extra year to complete a level, for any reason, will not receive a fee waiver or bursary payment during that time. 10. Placement years 10.1 Students on a placement year will not receive a bursary payment or fee waiver during their placement year. 11. Payment dates 11.1 The dates below are the earliest dates by which a student can expect to receive their cash payment. There will be occasions where payments are delayed where, for example, the bursary has been approved after the first payment date, or Student Finance do not have correct bank details for the student. You should then re-register your new card at the bookshop to completely deactivate the old card Replacements for damaged, lost or stolen cards can be obtained from your nearest LIS Helpdesk. There is a 5 charge for a replacement card and the balance from your original card will be transferred to your new card You can check your balance and transaction history at any time at the John Smith s Aspire scheme website ( Credit on your student ID card will be used up in a particular order. Credit given to you in the form of in kind benefit as part of your University bursary or National Scholarship will be spent before any introductory sums you may receive as part of the Chester Aspire Scheme Any unspent balance will remain on your student ID card for use in the next academic year The University will be entitled to apply any unspent balance on your student ID card, applied in the form of a bursary / National Scholarship, against any debts that you owe to the University.
