1 Registered Veterinary Technician Program Application Instructions Thank you for your interest in the Allan Hancock College Registered Veterinary Technician program. The veterinary technician field is a demanding discipline and the course of study is both challenging and rewarding. Please review the contents of this application packet thoroughly prior to submitting your application and supporting documents. If you have questions regarding the Registered Veterinary Technician program and/or specific questions about the application process, contact the Life & Physical Sciences department at (805) ext PROGRAM The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Program is a two-semester program, held weekday evenings. One of its goals is to provide the educational requirements which, in conjunction with the required clinical practice experience, will qualify veterinary assistants to sit for the RVT exam under the Alternate Route category. An additional goal of the RVT program is to provide, to those students without any clinical veterinary experience, the knowledge and skills to help them gain entrance into the workforce as a veterinary assistant. A grade of C or better in the veterinary technology classes is required to progress in the program. ALTERNATE ROUTE (This relates to the state licensing exams, not the AHC program requirements) Under the Alternate Route eligibility category for the RVT licensing examination, a candidate must complete a combination of at least 4416 hours of directed clinical practice in no less than 24 months under the direct supervision of a California-licensed veterinarian and 300 hours (or 20 semester or 30 quarter units) of specific education. RVT candidates must document their proficiency in specific areas of their clinical experience by submitting a Task List signed by a supervising veterinarian. Both the RVT specific courses and the directed clinical practice must have been completed no more than five years prior to applying for the licensing exam. General subjects such as chemistry, math, and biology may have been completed any time prior to applying. Examination application eligibility is subject to denial upon review of your background information. This includes any veterinary-related disciplinary actions, misdemeanors or felony convictions. 2 FINANCIAL AID For assistance with registration fees and supplies please visit EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES The 2012 median pay for veterinary technicians, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was $14.56 per hour. The job outlook for is expected to grow by about 30% (much faster than average). A registered veterinary technician may work in private practice such as at a veterinary hospital or in a veterinary specialty practice, such as dentistry, surgery, or an emergency clinic. Other areas of employment include equine hospitals, mobile clinics, laboratories, veterinary teaching hospitals, animal shelters, rescue organizations, armed services, public health, and zoos. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Applicants to the Registered Veterinary Technician program must complete the following prerequisite classes (or equivalent) with a grade of "C" or better. Any prerequisite classes that are in progress at the time of application must be completed prior to the fall class registration period. If prerequisite classes were not taken at AHC, send any necessary transcripts to document that the following were successfully completed. CHEM 120 Introductory Chemistry (or the equivalent) BIOL 100 Introductory Biology (or the equivalent) If you are accepted into the program, enrollment in classes requires that there are no academic probation or dismissal issues, all required transcripts have been received, and prerequisite classes taken at other schools are equivalent to BIOL 100 and CHEM 120. If you have questions regarding your academic standing or equivalencies, contact the Counseling department at (805) ext AP Biology and AP Chemistry College Board exam scores of 3 or higher will be accepted as meeting the prerequisite requirements. Complete the RVT program application. If currently employed as a veterinary assistant, ask your employer to submit the Employer/Supervisor Notification Form directly to the RVT Program. It is recommended that you provide your employer with a pre-addressed stamped envelope.
