2 Program Leader: Professor Mariana Grigoras and Professor Anastasia Romanchuk To be eligible for this program, you must have: Successfully completed at least on semester at Northwood University. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above. Students on academic probation are not eligible to apply. Completed prerequisite courses for academic credit offered with specific study abroad programs Program Overview and Schedule Students who are accepted to the program will travel to Italy, enjoying breathtaking vistas, visiting cities, touring museums and castles, viewing artistic and architectural masterworks from the ancient and medieval period, and learning more about the impact of the Renaissance on the making of the modern world. Students will also learn about the culture of Italy and its people. The program will consist of travel within Italy. Each student will be expected to attend two pre-departure lectures, write a detailed daily journal in which they will reflect on everyday encounter with the Italian history and culture, and each student will have to turn in a research paper from the topics listed under course materials on Bb. The paper will consist of six pages and be documented using the APA. Students accepted into the program must also attend several mandatory orientation sessions that will be held before departure. Dates for these orientation sessions will be set once the final roster of participants is complete. The travel schedule is as follows: NOTE: When traveling abroad, flexibility is important. Sometimes plans need to be adjusted, so the schedule is subject to change. Students who are accepted into the program will receive a number of updates with more specific details regarding travel and the program. There will be some free time built into the schedule so that students may explore on their own. May 13 May 14 May 14 to 17 May 18 to 21 May 21 to 23 May 24 PM departure from U.S. Arrive in Rome, Italy Rome Florence Torino (Turin) Return to U.S. Academic Program Students who apply and are accepted to the program will be enrolled in HIS 3850: Special Topics or ENG 3850: Special Topics and will earn 3 hours of credit for successfully participating in the program and fulfillment course requirements. The course can be used as a substitute for a global (HIS), civic (ENG) or general elective. Students will complete all pre coursework, assignments while in the Italy, and post coursework due after the program. 2
3 The course is designed for sophomore, junior or senior level students. The course will include: Two pre-departure orientation sessions (a pre-trip assignment is due before departure) Travel to Italy where students will visit various sites. Upon return to the United States, students would need to complete and submit their course work to Professor Grigoras or Professor Romanchuk. These items would be due two weeks after arrival back in the U.S. A detailed course syllabus will be sent to students accepted for the program. Program Leader Professor Grigoras Mariana Grigoras is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Science and Humanities, and has been on the faculty of Northwood University since She earned her MA in History from the University of Bucharest, and has taught at Northwood University, Davenport University and Mid-Michigan Community College. She has taught courses in western civilization for many years. Professor Grigoras is a native of Romania. Professor Romanchuk Anastasia Romanchuk, Associate Professor at Northwood University, has a BA in English from McMaster University and an MA in Education from Central Michigan University. Professor Romanchuk has taught English and Humanities courses for twenty-five years both in Ontario and Michigan colleges. In her spare time Ms. Romanchuk loves to explore art and culture through theatre, film and travel. Whether it is a local Midland Center for the Arts show, touring the Louvre Museum in Paris or taking part in the Toronto Film Festival, she enjoys it all. Professor Romanchuk has travelled to Europe previously, taking Northwood students to London and Paris, and is excited explore Italy this year. She will share with students the history, culture, theater and art this amazing country has to offer. Travel All students participating in this program will depart together from the Detroit airport (DTW), and return to the Detroit airport at the end of the program. Roundtrip airfare from Detroit is part of the program fee, and Northwood University will purchase air tickets for all students. Individual students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Detroit airport. You must have a valid passport to participate in this program. ***Obtaining a passport is YOUR responsibility. You MUST have your passport in hand when you return your application. The passport number will be needed at that time for insurance purposes. *** Students need to have a passport that is valid for at least six months following the date of their return to the USA. NOTE: Those who do not hold American citizenship should check with the International Programs Office at intlprograms@northwood.edu regarding the need for a visa to travel to the Italy. 3
4 Standards of Behavior For this program, it is essential that each participant make an effort to get along with everyone else and to be courteous to our hosts. Students will be asked to review and sign a standards of behavior document prior to departure. A student who disregards these standards, in spite of warnings, may be dismissed from the program. Insurance As part of the program fee, Northwood University will purchase, on behalf of the student, a study abroad insurance and a limited preferred health plan for international travel but Northwood University strongly recommends that students NOT rely solely on the insurance that is purchased by the University. Students are responsible for any other health insurance, and they should check with their insurance provider as to coverage for health and medical insurance while traveling abroad. Students Enrolled in Northwood Universities Insurance can obtain information regarding their coverage at Costs The cost for the program is $5350 per person, which includes tuition for 3 hours of academic credit. The payment schedule for the program is as follows: $500 deposit due with the application on First payment of $2,425 due on March 3 rd 2017 Second payment of $2,425 due on March 31 st 2017 Financial balances must be paid in full before departure. The program fee includes: tuition for 3 credit hours roundtrip airfare to Italy and all planned travel in Italy ground transportation from airports to hotel/hostel international travel insurance preferred health plan for international students all hotel/hostel accommodation while in Europe transportation and entry tickets to all venues planned group activities and excursions some group meals The fee does not include: travel to and from Detroit airport 4
5 any meals not included in the program personal expenses such as souvenirs, clothing, etc. personal travel and activities any individual passport/visa Applications and Deadlines Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Your application will consist of: the application form, a nomination form (completed by a Northwood faculty member and sent in separately from your application), course substitution form (completed and signed by an academic counselor), A copy of the photo page of your passport, if you have it, must accompany the application or if you do not have it at the time of application must be sent it as soon as you obtain your passport. Applications must be completed and returned to the International Programs office by Feb 10, You will be notified within fourteen days of this deadline whether or not you have been accepted to the program. If the number of applications exceeds spaces, a waiting list will be maintained. Upon notification of your acceptance to the program, you must return an acceptance form. 10 Study Abroad Scholarship Policy Please note the study abroad scholarship policy now in effect for the academic year: 1. All study abroad scholarship requests must be made in writing to via to: The request should include: student s full name, student ID and the name of the specific program to which the student is applying, and a brief (no more than 1 page) statement of financial need (any information that would demonstrate need). 2. Students must have a complete program application on file (including the faculty reference form and course substitution form) in order to be considered for a scholarship. Students who do not have a complete application on file will be notified that their request is pending until the application is complete. 3. Scholarship applications must be received by the published application deadline for the specific program. Scholarship requests for specific programs will be reviewed by the study abroad scholarship committee immediately following the published application deadline for that program. The Director of International Education will then communicate the committees decision to the applicant. 4. Scholarship requests are based solely on financial need. There is no fixed amount per scholarship award. Any scholarship awards are intended to assist students with the cost of study abroad, but will not cover the entire cost of any program. 5. Scholarship funds, if awarded, are credited to the student s university account. Scholarship funds cannot be used as cash or to support cash expenses for a study abroad program. 10
