2 Math Pathways STEM students are students who plan to major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. Their education plan should be directing them to Calculus and beyond. Math 125 and 131 the similar content to High School Algebra 1 & 2. SLAM students are students who are planning to take Stats or Liberal Arts Math, NOT Calculus. Their education plan includes transferring with either Math 15 or Stat 50 or earning a certificate and AS. o o Quantitative Literacy I (QL1) & Quantitative Literacy II (QL2) are 6 units each with 5 hrs of lecture and 3 hrs of lab each week. They are designed to develop critical thinking skills, to show how math is used in real life (for example: financing a home) and to prepare students for Stat 50 and Math 15. The content of the SLAM path is very different from traditional math courses. There is only a small amount of traditional algebra. The focus of these courses is on other branches of mathematics: finance, geometry & measurement, probability & combinatorics, logs & exponentials, patterns & relationships, and statistics. Math 150, 141, and 131 all meet the Math Competency Requirement for students who are earning an AS degree, but do not to transfer. These students should be encouraged to take either Math 150 or 141, not 131. Placement in Prealgebra means a student is eligible for either of our PreAlgebra courses (Math 402 or 400AB) OR Quantitative Literacy I (Math 250). o STEM students should take Prealgebra. o SLAM students should take QL1 ( Math 250 ). Placement in Beginning Algebra means a student is eligible for any of our Beginning Algebra courses (Math 125, 127AB, or 128AB) OR Quantitative Literacy II (Math 150) o STEM students should take Beginning Algebra. o SLAM students should take QL2 ( Math 150 ). Placement in Intermediate Algebra means a student is eligible for any of our Intermediate Algebra courses (Math 131, 133AB, or 134AB) OR Quantitative Literacy II (Math 150) OR Survey of Mathematical Ideas (Math 141) o STEM students should take Intermediate Algebra. o SLAM students should take QL2 ( Math 150 ) or SOMI ( Math 141 ). Please note that Math 141 is a prerequisite for ONLY Stat 50, students planning to take Math 15 must take QL2 ( Math 150). Modular Program is designed for students who have some algebra background and want to fast track their progress through the pre STEM path. It is also a good way for SLAM students to cross over to the STEM side without having to back track. Contact Yoshi Yamato ( yyyamato@pasadena.edu ) or visit the MRC for more information. College Algebra (Math 3) Most students should be discouraged from taking Math 3. If a student is planning to take Calculus they should take Math 7A&B. If a student is not taking Calculus they should probably be taking Stat 50 or Math 15. We recognize that Math 3 transfers to many schools, but it is not a good terminal course.
