Exchange: Madrid, Spain Universidad Carlos III Erasmus Experience Report I) GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is located in different cities in the metropolitan area of Madrid. Founded in just 1983, it is quite a young and small public university, but with a mission to contribute to the improvement of the society. UC3M is an institution with a noticeable international profile. It offers a broad range of master s and bachelor's degree programs in English and nearly 20% of the student body is made up of international students. The university has a strong reputation in programs such as business, law, political science, economics, biomedical engineering and journalism and these are regularly ranked amongst the top 50 institutions worldwide. UC3M has four campuses located in various cities and towns close to Madrid. - Getafe campus is located in Getafe, a city in the southern metropolitan area close to Madrid. At the Getafe campus, which is the biggest of all four campuses, the faculty of Social sciences, Law, Communication and Humanities can be found. There are also other facilities such as libraries, computer rooms, cafeteria s, audio visual rooms and sport centres for various sports such as basketball, beach volleyball, tennis and squash areas. - Leganes campus is located in Leganes, also in the southern area of the province Madrid. The faculty of engineering can be found at the Leganes campus along with various education and sport facilities including an indoor swimming pool and an auditorium for concerts. - Colmenarejo campus located in the town Colmenarejo in the North-eastern part of Spain offers various courses and programs from different universities. - Madrid-Puerta de Toledo campus is located in the heart of Madrid and this campus offers masters programs for masters students. I followed business administration and economics programs at the Getafe campus, however I lived in the center of Madrid. The campus is surrounded by various little grocery stores called an alimentacion, supermarkets, local restaurants, the train station and a papeleria/imprimir. Lunch can be bought at one of the cafeteria s on the campus or a kebab sandwich at any kebab restaurant outside the campus or just something from the supermarket (Dia or HiperUsera) or other stores. At the campus, lots of information can be found about joining a sports club or being a member of the gym or any student associations. Orientation/Introduction activities The orientation day for exchange and international students was on the 1 st of September and it was held at the Getafe campus. On that day we received information about the university, study structure, choosing courses and signing up with ESN or any other association. After the general information, we had the opportunity to go outside for some food and drinks, mingle with others and finding your buddy mentor and group. The buddy mentors were mostly Spanish students, so this was a good opportunity to get in contact with the locals as they also introduced one to other Spanish students. There was also an activity planned on each day for the month of September by ESN for exchange and ESN members, for example different tours in Madrid, tapas tours, flamenco shows,
salsa dance lessons, trips to other cities in Spain, parties, language village and etcetera. This was nicely organized and there was so much to do each day that there was no time to feel bored or homesick. II ACADEMIC INFORMATION Classes started the next Wednesday after the orientation day and the exchange students got 2- weeks trial period weeks to follow different classes. After those two weeks, a definite choice had to be made. This was a good opportunity to check out different classes. The courses I followed were all in English since my level of Spanish was not academically sufficient to follow any courses in Spanish. In my opinion the educational system at UC3M is a bit lighter than what I was used to at Tilburg university. I did not purchase any extra material for my courses, as almost all materials could be found online, except some teaching notes for one course. The workload was also relatively less than at Tilburg university. For 4 out of the 5 courses, we had group projects, presentations to give, papers to submit, midterms and etc. However I found that this can also be prepared within a short period of time. The teaching style was dependent on the course or the content of the chapter and was therefore theoretical or practical accordingly. Teaching method was also a mix of group work, case studies and lectures, all depending on the courses. I however noticed that there was less group work at UC3M compared to Tilburg university. I am satisfied with my academic achievements at UC3M, however if I got the chance to choose again, I would definitely change some courses I chose. I followed 3rd and 4 th year courses below, all on bachelors level. I was allowed to follow one course which was non-business or non-economic related, so I opted for the course Emerging countries. In general, there were no problems with enrolling if you enrolled on time. The exams for courses in the fall semester could be taken before Christmas in December (mostly for exchange students) or in January. Course and code Prerequisites Form of Exam ECTS credits Comments Financial Systems and Institutions (13180) Written (Open exam ) 6 Not too difficult, but lots of details and calculations to remember. And also a lot of information about Spanish financial institutions. Bank Management (13193) Human Resource Management (13196) Macroeconomics Financial Economics Organizational Behaviour Written (Multiple choice and open ) Written open 6 Very intensive; 4 graded exercises, 1 midterm, a presentation, paper and final exam. 6 Professor made course very interesting, however not every slides were made available to students which
Financial Derivatives (13766) Emerging Countries (16651) Written open Written take-home exam with open required one to attend all classes. 6 Very challenging and intensive. 6 Very badly organized by professor and very vague. Students could easily access the library and resources, although there were not many computers available in the library (building 12 Getafe), many students brought their own laptops and tablets. I found the printing facilities at the university very inefficient. There was basically only one general place with 2 or 3 printers and scanners at the university for students to print. Moreover this place was led by 2, 3 or sometimes even 1 employee behind a counter who took your USB-stick or the mail sent to the printing office, printed it out and then you had to pay. One can imagine how inept and inefficient this system is, if there are numerous students wishing to print. III PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT LIFE IN MADRID Before I left, I made sure I got all my documents needed for the Erasmus+ grant and the Study Abroad office. A tip I would offer is to continually send UC3M mails in order for them to handle your request faster, otherwise it might take longer than needed. Another tip is also to sign up for the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) Buddy program at UC3M before you arrive, because invitations are usually sent before the summer holidays. I also joined groups on Facebook such as CityLife Madrid, BeMadrid and Smart Insiders where a lot of information was given to exchange students before and during their arrival and they also organized trips and fun activities. Housing I knew from the start that I wanted to live in Madrid, somewhere close to the centre and not in Getafe. Living in Madrid is more expensive than living in Getafe, so take this in to account if you are planning on doing the same, but it is definitely worth it. I started looking for housing about 2-3 months before I was supposed to arrive. I joined the ESN Madrid 2017 Facebook for housing and accommodation, however I eventually found a room in the city centre close to Plaza Mayor via Idealista. Websites I recommend are: Idealista, Facebook, Fotocasa, EasyPiso, Opera Housing and Erasmusu. Other tips: - Be careful of scammers. - Do not transfer money until you are very sure of the room, so maybe after you have seen it, or had a skype call with the landlord for example where the room is shown. - Do your research on the location where you want to live in and take the costs and distance to the university into account - Make sure you know what comes with the room, because some rooms do not offer clean Bedsheets, pillows or blankets so you have to get them yourself (Primark has a cheap home collection for this!)
Arrival For my arrival in Madrid, I booked a taxi in advance which would take me from the airport to my room. After arriving, I went straight to the office of CityLife Madrid where I received information about student events, tours, parties, maps, trips to other cities, SIM card for a Spanish number, emergency numbers, advice for the transportation card in Madrid (Abono Joven) and so on. Tip: - Do your research about the transportation card before coming, as some websites advise applying and ordering it online 1 month before you arrive. - Some stores for the transportation card do not offer instant delivery and you might be required to wait for some days to get your card. So plan how you will get to the university if do not have the card. - You need to have your ID card with you and a passport picture is optional when you want your Abono Joven. Living Costs I financed my exchange period with my own finances, Erasmus+ grant and money from the Dutch government (student loan + OV reimbursement). I spent a lot in Madrid of course on housing, trips, food, social life and miscellaneous, compared to Tilburg. I did not spend a lot on books because most were available as PDF s versions or a summary was provided by the lecturers. My approximate monthly budget whilst on exchange looked somewhat like this: Rent: 450 Transportation: 20 Food: 90 Miscellaneous (depending on if I go on a trip or not): The average monthly costs ranges between depending on one s budget and lifestyle. I took numerous day trips, weekend trips or just a vacation while in Spain. I advise other exchange students to make sure they make an approximate budget before coming to Madrid and look for numerous ways to save money, however do not let money stop you from getting the most out of your stay. Culture and Language I followed the Spanish A1/A2 level at the Language school of UvT for one semester. I recommend everyone to do this in order to know some basic Spanish words and expressions which are useful for small talks or in need of help. I experienced only mere problems with the language, but I always used Google translate to find any last-minute sentences. I did not experience extreme culture shock in Madrid, however it might not be the same for each individual. I like the Spanish way of relaxing, not stressing too much about life and being passionate about simple things. However I did get annoyed and irritated about how slow things were moving i.e waiting for the Spanish internet providers might take 2 weeks instead of the 2-3 days they promised or how slow people walked in general on the streets or shops, and banks or restaurants being closed for some hours in the afternoon when you need them. I was surprised to find that most workers
work long hours from 8am till usually 8pm, it was also strange seeing kids outside and in bars and restaurants on weekdays past 8pm. In addition to that the Spaniards have dinner really late (10pm) compared to the Dutch style of 6pm and I found out that queuing is part of the Spanish lifestyle and also partaking in lotteries. All in all, the Erasmus exchange program is a great way of putting yourself out of your comfort zone. It gives one an opportunity to immerse himself in a different culture, learning how to survive without being close to a familiar support system, getting to know people with different cultures and so much more. I definitely recommend going on exchange and also my host university, Universidad Carlos III. Sure there might be times when you feel homesick, lost, lonely, broke, sad, confused and stressed out, but all this only prepares you for the good moments. Have the most fun you want and go out partying everyday if you desire, but do not forget your education while on exchange! You will receive much more than you bargained for and maybe also have the most amazing experience ever, but you just need to be open, be positive and put yourself out there first. Pásalo Bien!
