2 EYE CARE PROFESSIONALS Opticians Dispense glasses and contact lenses Optometrists Primary eye care Ophthalmologists Diseases and surgery of the eyes Dr. Brian Adair, Medical Director OPHTHALMIC MEDICAL ASSISTANTS Dependent health care providers Ophthalmology or optometry offices Perform tasks under the supervision of an MD/OD Vital member of the eye care team OPHTHALMIC MEDICAL TECHNICIAN As of January 2009 the ophthalmic allied health profession was approved as a separate occupational listing in the Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupational Classification. All levels of ophthalmic personnel are included in this classification Ophthalmic Medical Technicians Assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. May administer eye exams, administer eye medications, and instruct the patient in care and use of corrective lenses. Source: US Department of Labor 2

3 LEVELS OF CERTIFICATION Certified ophthalmic assistant (COA ) Certified ophthalmic technician (COT ) Certified ophthalmic medical technologist (COMT ) JCAHPO CERTIFICATION Computer based exam during final semester of our program Continuing education requirement 18 credits each 37 months PLEASE BE AWARE THAT: To ensure the public health and safety of all patients, most disciplines of Health Science require registration, certification or licensure to work in one of the fields of health care. Most examining boards require proof of good moral character to apply to take the registration, certification or licensure exam. 4 CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS AND DRUG SCREENS Some clinical affiliates are requiring that students submit to a criminal background check and/or drug screen prior to placement. The cost for these tests is the responsibility of the student. Students who are refused by a clinical site due to failure to pass these screenings will not be allowed to progress in the program. WHAT SORTS OF TASKS DO OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANTS PERFORM? History taking and triage Basic ocular measurements such as: Vision muscle balance intraocular pressure TASKS, CONTINUED Special testing visual fields and imaging Surgical assisting Optical and contact lens work 4

8 TIME COMMITMENT (EXCLUDING BASIC COURSES) Most students spend at least 2 hours outside of class for every hour in class 3 days a week clinical during the fall and spring semesters READINESS CHECKLIST I am in good health and physical condition to meet the demands of the program. I have the financial plan and means to complete the program. I have adequate, stable, flexible childcare. I have dependable, personal transportation and will be able to commute to clinical sites. READINESS CHECKLIST, CONT D I am committed to making adjustments in order to complete the program. I am ready to attend class at least 6-8 hours per week and study outside of class. I can devote 24 hours each week to school in order to be successful.
