2 1. INTRODUCTION Entrepreneurship and innovation management represent the most important engines of value and new wealth creation in the contemporary economy. The Master of Science degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovations Management of the University of Nairobi is designed to give business managers and professionals a focused, relevant and utilizable body of knowledge in entrepreneurship and innovation management, suitable for people with an interest in starting and managing innovative ventures either within existing structures or by realizing new economic endeavours. As most corporations today realize that they need to be more innovative and entrepreneurial, the programme is positioned to prepare participants to help meet this challenge. The Master of Science degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovations Management is, therefore, devised in a way that can be utilized to position oneself for a fast-track career in innovative companies. The degree programme seeks to equip participants with requisite skills and knowledge for managing start-up businesses as well as successful entrepreneurial and -innovative management of existing enterprises. The degree is intended to develop high caliber manpower for developing entrepreneurship through research, policy and practice. The programme is suited for people who hold senior managerial positions as well as those who intend to take up careers in advisory roles in entrepreneurship related programmes. The programme offers students an opportunity to learn about and work directly with entrepreneurial firms. The programme also provides an excellent preparation for students wishing to obtain an integrated view of business operations. 2. OBJECTIVES The specifically aims to: (i) Enable the student to develop expertise in new venture creation and management. (ii) Enhance corporate entrepreneurship in mature enterprises. (iii) Inculcate into the student the culture of creativity, innovation, and innovations management. (iv) Enable the student to develop competency in development and management of SMEs. (v) Develop and enhance competency in research and consultancy on SMEs. 3. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 3.1 The common regulations for the Masters degree in the University of Nairobi shall apply. 3.2 In addition, the applicant must be a holder of: At least an Upper Second Class honours degree in any degree or equivalent in non-classified degrees. Or A Lower Second Class honours degree in any degree or equivalent in Page 2 of 7
3 non-classified degrees, with at least two (2) years post- qualification work experience A holder of Lower Second Class Honors or its equivalent plus a post-graduate degree in a relevant area of study A pass degree or equivalent in non-classified degrees with at least five years of post-graduation work experience Any other qualification accepted by the Senate to be equivalent to the above. 4. CREDIT TRANSFER AND EXEMPTIONS Applicants who have completed equivalent Masters course units in other Senate recognized universities may, with the approval of the Senate, be allowed to seek exemptions or credit transfers up to a maximum of one third (1/3) of the core course units. Students seeking to receive exemptions from or credit transfers for any prior course units done will need to fill official application forms, which require: i. A list of the University of Nairobi core course units for which the student is requesting credit transfer; ii. iii. iv. Official transcripts, indicating courses that may be equivalent and; Description and syllabus/outlines for the courses previously taken and passed. In addition there may be an exemption examination. All those seeking to transfer credits will be required to pay an appropriate credit transfer/exemption application fee. 5. COURSE DURATION AND STRUCTURE i. The programme may be covered in a minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters of fifteen weeks each; and will involve coursework, examinations and a project. ii. iii. iv. A candidate shall be allowed to take a minimum of two (2) course units and a maximum of six (6) course units per semester. There will be eight (8) core courses which will be taken by all candidates. In addition to the core course units, a candidate will be required to take four (4) general electives v. Course units can only be taken after the necessary prerequisites have been successfully completed. vi. After completing all the taught course units,a candidate will carry out a supervised research and produce a research project. Page 3 of 7
4 vii. viii. The taught course units constitute Part I of the programme while the research project constitutes Part II. Each semester course unit will be taught for a period of forty five (45) contact hours. 6. COURSES OFFERED 6.1. EXAMINATION REGULATIONS 7.1 Part I: Taught Courses (i) In each semester, candidates will be required to take a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of six (6) units inclusive of supplementary examinations. (ii) All candidates shall be required to take and pass a total of twelve (12) course units before being allowed to proceed to do a Research Project. (iii) Each course unit shall be examined through a two-hour written examination at the end of each semester. (iv) The final written examination shall account for fifty percent (50%) of the marks in each course, while continuous assessment shall account for the remaining fifty percent (50%). (v) The pass mark for each course shall be fifty percent (50%). (vi) Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any course unit may on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take supplementary examinations. (vii) A candidate who fails or passes after a supplementary or repeat examination in more than 1/3 of the course units will, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate, be discontinued from the programme. (viii) A pass obtained in the supplementary/repeat examinations shall be recorded as 50% in the candidate's academic record irrespective of the actual marks scored above 50. (ix) A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in supplementary examination shall be subject to the following on recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate:- a) Discontinued if the failed course is a core course unit, or b) Allowed to take another elective if the failed course is an elective course. c) Allowed to retake the course unit if the course is a core unit. Conditions (ii) and (iii) shall only apply provided the stipulated maximum period of 10 semesters is not exceeded; otherwise the candidate shall be discontinued. Page 5 of 7

Part II: Research Project (i) A candidate shall prepare a supervised research proposal which shall be subjected to an oral presentation to a panel of academic members of staff, after which the candidate shall carry out the recommended corrections and get approval of the supervisor before proceeding to collect data. (ii) (iii) (iv) Candidates shall be required to submit supervised research project for examination at least three weeks before end of semester in which it is to be examined. For purposes of examination regulations, the Research Project shall be considered to be equivalent to four (4) courses. The candidate shall be subjected to a defense of the final research project, which shall be graded such that 20% will go to continuous assessment by the supervisor, 20% to the oral defense, while the written research project shall be examined out of 60%. (v) The pass mark for the Research Project shall be fifty percent (50%). (vi) (vii) A candidate, who fails in the research project, may on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate, be allowed to re-submit the project for examination, up to two times within the stipulated period of 10 semesters. A pass obtained in the re-submission of a Research Project shall be recorded as 50% in the candidate's academic record. (viii) Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the second re-submission of the research project or fails to complete their study within the stipulated period of 10 semesters shall, on recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by senate be discontinued. 8. AWARD OF DEGREE Upon completion of the course requirements, the student will be awarded the degree of Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Innovations Management (M.Sc- EIM). Page 6 of 7
