MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI REGULATIONS FOR MASTER IN MEDICINE(FAMILY MEDICINE) DEGREE COURSE THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 44 of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai Act 1987 (Tamil Nadu Act 37 of 1987) the Standing Academic Board of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai hereby makes the following regulations: 1. SHORT TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT: These regulations shall be called as MASTER IN MEDICINE (FAMILY MEDICINE) DEGREE COURSE THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION MODE of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. This shall come into force from the Academic Year These regulations are subject to modifications by the Standing Academic Board from time to time. This course is not approved by Medical Council of India. 2. OBJECTIVES: The Course MASTER IN MEDICINE " FAMILY MEDICINE " DEGREE COURSE THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION MODE is designed as a comprehensive package wherein the candidates get exposure to various disciplines with particular emphasis on their clinical skills. This course caters to the medical graduates to offer quality primary medical care. 3. REGISTRATION: The Candidates admitted in the MASTER IN MEDICINE (FAMILY MEDICINE) DEGREE COURSE THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION MODE shall register his/her name with this University by submitting the prescribed application form for registration duly filled in along with the prescribed fee and declaration in the format to the Controller of Examinations of this University

5 2 within 30 days from the cut off date prescribed for the course for admission. The Candidate's name must be registered in the University within 3 Months from the date of his/her admission. The application should have the date of admission of the course. 4. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION : MBBS Degree obtained in any University recognised by Medical Council of India. 5. AGE LIMIT : No upper age limit for Admission. 6. ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE : Candidates who have passed MBBS qualifying examination as stated in Regulation No.4 above other than the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai shall obtain an Eligibility Certificate from this University by remitting the prescribed fees along with the application form and required documents before seeking admission into the Course. The application form is available in the University website: web.tnmgrmu.ac.in. 7. DURATION OF THE COURSE: The duration of the course is two years, through Distance Education mode. 8. COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE: The Courses shall commence from 1st August of the Academic Year. The cut off date for Admission is 31 st August every year. 9. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES: The Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Master in Medicine (Family Medicine) Degree Course shall be selected by the University / Institution The list of selected candidates will be published in the Website web.tnmgrmu.ac.in

6 3 10.MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION : English shall be the Medium of Instruction for all the Subjects of study and for examinations. 11.CURRICULUM : The Regulations, Curriculum and the Syllabus for the Course prescribed in these regulations are subject to modifications by the Standing Academic Board from time to time. 12. ADMISSION TO THE COURSE: The admission to MASTER IN MEDICINE (FAMILY MEDICINE) programmes is from 1st August to 31st August of every Academic year. 13.CUT OFF DATE OF THE COURSE : i) 31 st August of the year concerned. ii) The candidates admitted up to 31 st August of the Academic Year shall be registered to take up the examination at the end of 2 nd Year. 14. CONTACT PROGRAMMES: One Contact class per month will be conducted. Clinical contact classes will be conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital in chennai in the Forenoon. Theory contact classes will be conducted at the University premises in the Afternoon. For First Year programme, contact classes will be conducted on First Friday of every month. For Second Year programme, Contact classes will be conducted on Second Friday of every month. 15.ATTENDANCE: All the students should attend all the contact classes and 85% of attendance is mandatory. 16.CONDONATION OF BREAK OF STUDY: The Break of Study for a period of less than 90 days can be condoned by the Head of the Department and the Break of Study for a period of more than 90 days and less than one year has to be condoned by the University authorities. The

7 4 application form for condonation of Leave / Absence is available in the University website. Web.tnmgrmu.ac.in. 17.READMISSION AFTER BREAK OF STUDY: 1. The Course shall be completed within the period of Double the Duration from the date of admission. 2. The regulations for Re admission are as per the University's Common Regulation for Re admission after break of study. 18.MAINTAINENCE OF LOG BOOK: The candidate shall maintain a record of skills, he has acquired during the one year of training period, certified by various Heads of the Departments where he has undergone training. The candidates should also be required to participate in the teaching and training programme. 19.ASSIGNMENTS: The First Year Candidate has to submit the Assignment Booklet at the end of the First year of the course. The Second Year Candidate has to submit the Assignment Booklet 3 months before the final Examination. 20.PRACTICAL TRAINING: One session of Practical training shall be conducted at the Christian Medical College, Vellore for a period of 2 days in the 2 nd year of the course. 21. COMMENCEMENT OF THE EXAMINATIONS: Regular Examinations shall commence from 1 st August and supplementary Examinations will commence from 1 st February of every year. If the date of commencement of the examination falls on Saturday, Sunday or declared Public Holidays, the examination shall begin on the next working day.

8 5 22.COURSE DETAILS: Each contact session of every month comprises of clinicals in the morning and theory / lecture classes in the evening. There are 24 contact classes conducted during the entire course period. A qualifying examination shall be conducted at the end of Second Year of the course. The candidate should complete the course within 4 years from the date of joining the course. The examination shall consist of theory, practical/clinical and viva. The candidate has to score 50% in theory, practical/clinical and viva separately to qualify for a pass. The 2 nd year candidates should submit the log book 3 months prior to the final examination. The log book will be evaluated and the marks will be added in IA. Practical Examination will be conducted only at Christian Medical College, Chennai 23. REGISTRATION DETAILS: The list of Certificate to be enclosed with the Registration application. MBBS Degree Certificate recognised by MCI CRRI Completion Certificate. Registration Certificate from MCI / SMC Transfer Certificate/Course Completion Certificate from the Head of the Institution where the applicant last studied. Eligibility Certificate if required. Provisional / Degree Certificate of the qualifying examinations passed by him / her.

9 If the certificates are in a language other than English/Tamil, an authenticated translation in English should be sent along with the originals duly attested by a Gazetted Officer. All the original certificates would be returned after verification. The filled in application form along with the necessary Certificates/Documents should be sent to the Registrar, The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. 24.FEES DETAILS : 1 st Year Candidates Course Fees Rs.17,500/ Registration Fees Rs. 6,700/ 2 nd Year Candidates Course Fees Rs.17,500/ Examination Fees Rs.18,900/ 25. SCHEME OF THEORY EXAMINATION : 1. Theory Examination will be conducted at the end of the First and Second year for the candidates who have admitted from the Academic Year onwards. 2. Theory Examination will be conducted at the end of Second Year for the candidates who have admitted from the Academic Year onwards. Scheme of Practical Examination : 25 Marks 25 Marks 50 Marks Clinical Skills Examination OSCE Viva Voce Maximum Minimum a. OSCE (10 X 5= 50 MARKS) OSCE will have 10 stations. The maximum marks for OSCE is 50 marks. (10X5=50) The questions for OSCE may contain a ECG, a X ray, an instrument, a prescription, a lab investigation interpretation and the rest of the stations will be clinical scenarios. This is the general pattern of the questions, but may vary slightly from batch to batch. b. Clinical Skills examination (2 X 50 = 100 MARKS) In this session, the candidate will be examined for clinical skills, like consultation & communication skills, counseling skills, examination skills, diagnostic skills and management skills. Each candidate will be allotted 2 clinical skill stations and the maximum marks for each skill station is 50. c. Viva Voce (50 MARKS) a. Viva is usually conducted by 4 different examiners at 4 stations. Maximum mark for viva is 50.
