1 OPEN UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND LITERARY STUDIES ORIENTATION SPEECH, November 2013 The department of Linguistics and Literary Studies deals exclusively with language oriented courses. In order to accomplish this purpose aptly, the department offers both bachelor and postgraduate programs. I. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES At the undergraduate level, besides the old BA (Gen) and BA (Ed) Programmes that were offered in the past, the department has developed new programmes to cater for undergraduate students; the courses include Bachelor of English Language and Linguistics (BA ELL), Bachelor of Kiswahili and Creative Studies (BA KISW); and Bachelor of Arts in Literature (BALIT). i. BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS BA (BAELL) This course aims to introduce students to the nature, structure, and uses of language and; develop an understanding of descriptive and applied linguistic knowledge. BACHELOR OF ARTS IN LITERATURE (BALIT). The Bachelor of Literature Programme aims at providing a basic literature knowledge foundation as well as training in academic research and creative writing, and also prepares students for careers in academia, the general private sector or publishing entreprises (or to even establish their own). It will enable students to contribute to the advancement of research and literary output. 3 iii. BACHELOR OF ARTS IN KISWAHILI AND CREATIVE STUDIES (BA KISW.) The Kiswahili and Creative Studies programme seeks to acquaint students with both the background and other major linguistics and literary theories. I also intends to develop knowledge and application competences of these theories in critically analysing Kiswahili language and literary works. The course also provides advanced level instruction in a broad range of core subjects and therefore enables student to choose from a range of optional courses which might form the basis of specialization in their future career and studies. It also provides instruction in research methodology (OSW 225) will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their acquaintance in research methods and methodology. All candidates are required to take at least 36 OUT units which is equivalent to 360 TCU credits, each unit covering content materials equivalent to thirty five one hour lecture materials. BA GENERAL AND BA EDUCATION PROGRAMMES The department of Linguistics and Literary Studies will continue to teach language related core courses selected by BA ED not exceeding 16 units at all 3 levels. The BA General is being phased out with effect from this academic year. However for BA GEN students taking languages as teaching subjects who are in their final stages of completion will have to follow the old structure until they complete. The same structure that was in the previous prospectus for the BA General still applies. LINGUISTICS Level 1 Students taking Linguistics as a major subject must study all linguistics courses from this level, whereas those who take the course as a minor subject should take OLL 121 and 123 only. Level 2 B.A General students may take any three core courses from the second year list except OLL 226. B.A Education taking linguistics as a minor subject may take three core courses from the second year list one of which must be OLL 226. B.A Education students majoring in linguistics must take all core courses in the second year list one of which must be OLL 226. Level 3 ALL B.A Education majors in linguistics must take ALL core courses in the third year. However, the project will be done by students whose performance was above a B grade in the second year. Those who did not attain an average of B in the second year will have to choose two units from any elective course in the third year list. III. HIGHER DEGREE PROGRAMMES At the higher degree level the department offers the following postgraduate study programmes. 1. MASTERS PROGRAMMES There are two broad categories of master programs that the department offers at the present time Master of Arts by thesis This caters for candidates who wish to study postgraduate progamme under the distance mode. Under this category the department offers the following programmes M.A. in Linguistics M.A. in Literature M.A. in Kiswahili. Students studying MA degree by thesis accomplish their programme by writing an independent thesis under the supervision of a staff member from the department. Upon application the student has to present a proposal document which explains the nature of the problem one wishes to study, the objectives and study methodology Master of Arts by Coursework Under this category the department offers only M.A. Kiswahili (Coursework). The program is delivered in two modes, namely evening and executive. 4

5 Evening Mode This is a full time face to face delivery method; students who opt for this mode will attend lectures covering two of the core courses for 3 hours, twice a week. Respective lecturers will give them the timed tests during lectures and the final exams will be scheduled after 15 weeks. After a brief break, students will study the remaining two core courses and finally the electives in the third trimester. After completion of all courses the students will be taken through a research methodology course in a face to face session where they will come up with the research proposal. They will be assigned a supervisor for the dissertation; who will guide them to finalize the research and produce the final dissertation for examination. Executive Mode The core unit courses will be conducted in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza and Zanzibar. Depending on the number of students the same mode can be introduced in Kigali in Rwanda. There will be a two months break between sessions. Each course will be covered in five days at the end of which a Timed Test carrying 30% will be done. The final examinations (70%) for courses completed will be done on the first two days of the subsequent session. Research methodology course will be taught immediately after doing the final examinations for the elective courses which will be conducted in the various centres, and the students are expected to end up with a research proposal. Students will be assigned a supervisor for the dissertation; who will guide them to finalize the research and produce the final dissertation for examination. Duration of the Course A maximum period of five years has been approved. However, candidates may complete their courses of study within two years or less, after registration. In fact, students are encouraged to complete their studies earlier to reduce costs and ensure quality and usefulness of acquired knowledge. Admission requirements The common regulations of OUT for eligibility to study a Masters degree shall apply. In addition an applicant must have a BA degree in Kiswahili of OUT or its equivalent from other recognized universities. Design of the course The student shall specialize in either linguistics or literature and will be required to complete a total of 14 units before embarking on proposal and thesis writing. 5
