2 Immerse yourself in experiential learning Spend Winter Session 2007 in Italy with ACCENT and College of the Canyons. Explore Italian monuments, churches, museums and galleries, as Italy becomes an extension of your classroom while you attend History, Art and Photography classes with visiting College of the Canyons faculty. Participants on the Winter Session in Italy program live in double or triple occupancy rooms in two star hotels in Venice, Florence, and Rome. The ACCENT Florence and Rome Center staff offer optional social activities and provide support and guidance to students studying abroad. If you have questions about any aspect of this program, please feel free to contact us: ACCENT or the program faculty: Robert Walker at or ; Mark Daybell at or ; and Stephen Branch at or , ext January 8-25, 2007 Student Services: The ACCENT Centers ACCENT is an independent study abroad program provider with a multinational team of staff members who all have personal experiences in study abroad. With more than 20 years of experience coordinating high-quality overseas study programs, ACCENT works in partnership with U.S. colleges and universities to develop academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study experiences in Paris, Florence, London, Madrid and Rome. Each city is home to a fully staffed ACCENT Center that serves as a home base for program participants. The ACCENT San Francisco Center coordinates program enrollment and pre-departure preparation for students, helping to make their transition to living overseas as smooth as possible. The fully-staffed ACCENT Florence and Rome Centers provide on-site support services to program participants. The ACCENT Florence Center is located in the historic city center near the Piazza del Duomo and the ACCENT Rome Center is located in the historic city center near the Pantheon. The ACCENT Centers are open during the week for students to use the resource and lending libraries, ask questions, check their in the computer labs and collect their mail. The ACCENT staff in Florence and Rome provide a wide variety of on-site student services and are an invaluable resource for students who want to find out more about their host city. Transferable Academic Credit The Winter Session in Italy program is offered for transferable college credit through College of the Canyons. College of the Canyons is an accredited California Community College that will provide a transcript upon request for the course work completed overseas. Most courses are transferable to the University of California and California State University systems. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply. Application and Enrollment The Winter Session in Italy program is open to students who are at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Program space is limited. Participants should send in the enclosed application with the $250 non-refundable first payment as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, ACCENT and College of the Canyons will send you additional enrollment forms. Due to limited space on this program, students should apply by October 26, Beyond October 26, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits and all payments have been received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center.
3 Program Faculty Stephen E. Branch is Associate Professor of History at College of the Canyons. He has taught American history and western civilization courses at the college and university levels for fifteen years. Primarily trained as a cultural and intellectual historian, Professor Branch is particularly interested in the late medieval and early modern periods in European studies. This trip will constitute his fifth visit to Europe (and fourth that includes Italy) in the past decade. Mark Daybell is a professional photographer with more than 20 years experience as a freelance artist. He is currently chair of the Multimedia Department at College of the Canyons, were he has been teaching multimedia, design and photography for the past 8 years. He received his BS in Applied Art from California State University, San Luis Obispo and his MFA in Creative Photography from California State University Fullerton. He has traveled extensively through North America and Europe. Robert Walker has been a professor of art history at College of the Canyons for 15 years. He has led art history tours to both France and Italy in the past and he has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and S.E. Asia. He received his MFA from the University of California at Irvine and teaches both art history and sculpture at College of the Canyons. Mr. Walker is an internationally exhibiting artist with recent exhibitions in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Bangkok. He serves as president of the board of LA Artcore, a non-profit organization that programs 24 exhibitions a year. He is a passionate student of both French and Italian cultures. Program Timetable: Application due: with first payment Final payment due: October 26 Departure from U.S.: January 7 Arrival in Venice: January 8 Classes begin: January 9 Arrival in Florence: January 11 Arrival in Rome: January 18 Return to U.S.: January 25 The Academic Curriculum Participants on the Winter Session in Italy program will be able to earn 6 units of college credit by taking two of the following three courses. Each student must be enrolled in at least one class to participate. ART 205: Landmarks of Art (Walker/3 units) An art appreciation course that will acquaint students with the masterworks of Italian art and architecture. Students will visit the great museums, churches and cathedrals of Venice, Florence, Siena, and Rome. Visits included in this comprehensive course will be: the Accademia in Venice, the Uffizzi and Accademia in Florence, the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and the Borghese in Rome. Day trips to Siena, Orvieto, and Padova to visit the cultural resources of these cities will be included. This course emphasizes the extraordinary Italian Renaissance. HIST 101: History of Western Civilization: The Pre-Industrial West (Branch/3 units) This course is a general survey of the history of western civilization from earliest times to the 16th century. Emphasis is placed on socio-political and cultural development from prehistory, through the classical past, and into the medieval and early modern eras. This course will employ a living history approach that stresses the experiential benefits of travel. For nearly three weeks, Italy will serve as our classroom. PHOTO 150: Introduction to Cameras & Composition (Daybell/3 units) Designed to provide information in the use of cameras, lenses, film and exposure to produce photographs. Students also review photographic works that have been major influences and that reflect broader artistic and societal issues. No laboratory. It is recommended that students provide a 35 MM film or Digital SRL camera capable of manual exposure adjustment. UC credit limitation: PHOTO-150 and 160 combined, maximum credit one course. This course is: Associate Degree Applicable - CSU transferable. While in Italy, all course work will be completed on location with a minimum of classroom time. Cultural Program Cultural learning is an integral part of the Winter Session in Italy program. Included in the program is a one-day excursion outside of Florence to Siena and one optional two-day/one-night excursion to Pompeii/Herculaeum from Rome ($240). All excursions include transportation and guided visits. Excursions are chosen based on the academic curriculum and are subject to change.

Students can also choose to stay in a single room in the hotels with a supplement of $600. Single rooms are not guranteed. Housing is provided from the first day of the program (January 8, 2007). College of the Canyons Tuition & Fees A $26 per unit enrollment fee must be paid to College of the Canyons at the time of registration. Nonresidents of California pay $171 per unit. Fees are set by the State of California and are subject to change. Students must provide proof of travel insurance at time of registration. The payment schedule is the applicant's contractual obligation. Failure to make each payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availability of space and late enrollment fees. All prices and fees reflect exchange rates current as of 12/05 and are subject to change. ACCENT charges a $20 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course of business. Cancellations All cancellations must be made in writing to ACCENT and College of the Canyons, and are effective the date of receipt by ACCENT San Francisco. Participants are liable for payments until written cancellation is received. Cancellation Fees: 70 days or more prior to start of program $ to 69 days prior to start of program $ to 49 days prior to start of program $750 8 to 29 days prior to start of program $ to 7 days prior to start of program No Refund Transportation All participants must check-in at the program hotel in Venice on January 8, 2007 between 9am and 5pm (Note: most transatlantic flights depart one day before their arrival date). ACCENT will organize an optional round-trip group flight from Los Angeles. Airfare is not included in the program fee. Group flight participants will be met at the airport in Venice and transferred to their hotel. Group flight participants returning to the U.S. on the group return date will receive transportation to the Rome airport. Participants on the Winter Session in Italy program will receive detailed optional group flight information approximately three to four months prior to departure. Estimated airfare $ $1200. Although the Santa Clarita Community College District ( District ) has attempted to determine the accuracy of this brochure, the District does not assume any liability with respect to the contents of the brochure. Courses offered, together with other related matters contained herein, are subject to change without notice by the administration and/or Governing Board of the District for reasons related to enrollment, finances, scheduling, dates and costs or for any other reason, at the discretion of the District. The District further reserves the right to add, amend or repeal any of its rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Travel, housing, meals and other logistical arrangements are provided by a contracting agency not affiliated with the District. Participants will be required to sign a travel request and release which will exonerate the District from any liability. The District assumes responsibility only for providing a supervising instructor and appropriate academic units for courses. All courses are subject to approval by the Governing Board of Santa Clarita Community College District. All students must enroll for course credit (credit/ no credit option available when indicated in the catalog); no auditors are allowed. Units and course grades will be awarded by the District. ACCENT is not responsible for the academic segment of the program except as specified in the contract between ACCENT and College of the Canyons. Nor is ACCENT responsible for airline delays of any kind, or for expenses or loss incurred as a result of such delays. With regard to transportation/travel, regardless of the type of vehicle, ACCENT acts for the passenger as agent only. ACCENT assumes no liability for accident, injury, damage, or loss in any vehicle, or as a result of default by any person or company engaged in transporting the passenger.
