3 Barry Sixth Form 1 Welcome Thank you for the interest you have shown in studying with the Barry Sixth Form. We offer a really outstanding sixth form experience which will be relevant to many students following the successful completion of their GCSEs. Thank you for everything you ve done for me over the years. I ve really enjoyed my 7 years at the school and will miss it greatly Year 13 student about to start a degree course in Medicine This is an exciting time for Year 11 students, with many options to choose between for your post-16 education. The decisions that you make will shape the next few years of your life and we strongly advise you to take the time to explore all of your options, both for next year and beyond. An application to the Barry Sixth Form will allow you to study courses that are well considered and closely match your talents, interests and future aims. 4 The aims of the Barry Sixth Form are: To provide an atmosphere and ethos within the partner schools that allow the purposeful pursuit by the students of their chosen courses; To provide an appropriate range of academic and vocational courses for students with appropriate prior qualifications; To ensure that the sixth form curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant to student aptitudes; To offer students opportunities to broaden their education beyond the specific requirements of their programmes of study To support students through pastoral and monitoring structures that will maximise successful course completion. 5 Barry Sixth Form 3 Supporting our Students The Barry Sixth Form has a strong commitment to, and an excellent reputation for, its pastoral care and guidance systems. A friendly and happy atmosphere is valued as an important contribution to each student s success. Heads of Sixth Form, personal tutors and teaching staff will guide and advise you. Regular individual reviews of progress are a key element in this support.

6 4 Barry Sixth Form Facilities The Barry Sixth Form is the combination of two successful schools, Barry Comprehensive School and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School. The two schools have worked closely together since 1993 to provide a co-educational sixth form. Both sites offer excellent, purpose-built facilities for all students. Specialist subject rooms provide students with all the necessary equipment and outstanding ICT resources are available to all. Additional facilities include a sports hall, swimming pool, indoor climbing wall and Astroturf pitches. A full catering service is offered allowing students to purchase food and drinks throughout the day.

7 Barry Sixth Form 5 Curriculum The Barry Sixth Form experience offers a wide choice of subjects and real opportunities for success. You can choose from over forty courses - more than any other local institution offers! These include A levels, Principal Learning and BTECs. The Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification is also available on both sites and offers subject specialism combined with an arts, science and vocational base. Students are given strong support in pursuing their chosen course of study. We have high expectations of all students. We will stretch and challenge you. Curriculum information can be found at and

8 6 Barry Sixth Form Student Life Student activities are co-ordinated by the Student Parliament or School Council where students are offered the chance to take on posts of real responsibility. Students have many opportunities to participate in residential field trips and day or part day visits as part of their studies. In addition there are many opportunities open to students to visit other countries. Our links with schools in Sri Lanka are now well established and participating students have found their visits to be life changing experiences. The entire experience was incredible, every aspect of the country told a story. You could still see the last remnants of the tsunami in areas like Galle. I loved helping to build communities and being a part of what Help Lanka had already started Sixth Former returning from Sri Lanka

9 Barry Sixth Form 7 Social In addition to the excellent tutorial and library facilities provided for students, the Barry Sixth Form also provides comfortable social areas which offer more relaxed accommodation where students can meet and quieter areas for private study. The Valedictory Dinner for all students at the end of their second year of study is an extremely popular and well attended event and celebrates successes and achievements prior to the students moving on to the next stage in their life long learning.

10 8 Barry Sixth Form Practical Matters Entry Requirements Entry to AS Level or equivalent Level 3 courses requires a minimum of five grade C subjects at GCSE. Individual subjects may have additional requirements to ensure that students only enter courses for which they have the capacity and resolution to succeed.
