40 Enrollment by Admission Status The composition of the NHCC student population has shifted over the past ten years as transfer students make up an increasing proportion of the population while regular (first time) students are decreasing. Unclassified students have nearly doubled from eight percent in 2006 to 15 percent in This increase in unclassified students is most likely due to the MnSCU procedural change that allows students from other institution to register as visiting students and therefore remain unclassified. 48 Low Income Status/Pell Eligibility Pell eligibility is often used as a way to identify low income students. The percent of North Hennepin students identified as Pell eligible has increased from 23 percent in fiscal year 2006 to approximately 45 percent over the past four years. In ,677 students were Pell eligible. The number of ineligible students has remained fairly flat across the time frame averaging 2,200 students. The portion of students for whom the college does not know their eligibility has decreased from nearly 60 percent in fiscal year 2006 down to 36 percent in 2015 as a greater proportion of students apply for financial aid. 12,000 10,000 8,000 6,000 4,000 2,000 0 Pell Eligibility 35% 23% 22% 26% 28% 4,338 4,017 3,793 3,896 3,837 3,701 4,714 4,913 5,092 5,096 2,185 2,094 2,157 2,065 2,003 2,569 2,479 2,172 2,023 2,076 3,783 2,079 2,057 2,436 2,750 4,515 4,784 4,969 4,941 4, % 45% 45% 46% 45% Pell Eligible Not Pell Eligible Status Unknown % Pell eligible Source: EPM11/Accountability Framework/Enrollment Analytic Tool 48 Student Profile Credit Students North Hennepin Community College

49 First Generation Status First generation status essentially describes the educational attainment of a student s parents or guardians. A first generation student is a student whose parents or guardians did not go to college or did not complete a four year degree. As shown in the next few sections, there are multiple definitions for the term first generation. The federal definition of the term includes more students than the Minnesota definition (see Appendix for more information). In fiscal year 2015, nine percent of North Hennepin students were had an unknown status that is, the college does not have data about their parents educational attainment and cannot determine whether the student is a first generation students or not. The proportion of students in the unknown category has decreased from 19 percent in First Generation Federal Definition: Neither parent has a bachelor s degree Between fiscal years 2006 and 2015, the percent of students identified as meeting the federal first generation definition increased slightly from 56 percent to 59 percent. 51 Underrepresented Status A student is considered underrepresented if he or she fits into one or more of the following categories: (1) student of color, (2) low income, or (3) first generation. Note that while there are two definitions of first generation, only the Minnesota definition is used for underrepresented (see Appendix for more information). Approximately one quarter to one third of NHCC students each year have an unknown status that is, the college does not have data about their race, Pell eligibility status, or parents educational attainment and cannot determine whether they are underrepresented students or not. The percent of students who are underrepresented is calculated as a percent of those with known status. Underrepresented Minnesota Definition of First Generation Nearly two of every three students at North Hennepin meets the underrepresented definition (e.g., student of color, low income, or Minnesota first generation) in The proportion of North Hennepin students who meet the underrepresented definition has increased from 50 percent in 2006 to 66 percent in Underrepresented MN Definition of First Generation 12,000 10,000 8,000 6,000 4,000 2,000 50% 51% 53% 54% ,510 3,411 3, ,178 1,077 1,100 4,607 4,718 5, % 63% 64% 64% 65% 66% ,671 2,555 2,668 2,580 2, ,286 1,253 1,250 1,171 1, ,760 6,863 7,104 7,092 6, Underrepresented Status Unknown Not Underrepresented % Underrepresented MN Definition Source: EPM11/Accountability Framework/Enrollment Analytic Tool North Hennepin Community College Student Profile Credit Students 51

52 Average Credit Load by Semester The average credit load is the average number of credits that NHCC students register for in a given semester. Overall the average credit load has decreased by approximately one half a credit in the fall and spring terms. The average credit load has remained fairly constant for full time students each term. Part time students have generally increased their credit load by one half credit in both fall and spring terms. Despite the increase in average credits taken by part time students, when coupled with the growing proportion of part time students at the college, leads us to decline in average credits overall. Credit loads taken in summers terms has been consistent over time. 59 Student Engagement Community College Survey of Student Engagement The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) is a national survey focusing on student engagement, or the amount of time and energy that students invest in meaningful educational practices. CCSSE includes five benchmarks calculated from conceptually related survey items to provide an overview of critical student behavior and institutional practice necessary to promote and support student engagement. The CCSSE benchmarks include active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student faculty interaction, and support for learners. North Hennepin first administered the CCSSE in Since 2005, MnSCU has required college participation one time per biennium for inclusion in accountability and performance measures. The graph below shows NHCC s benchmark scores over the past seven administrations. Benchmarks are standardized to compare with a national mean of 50 for all community colleges. The Support for Learners benchmark continued to increase in 2015 and is currently North Hennepin s only benchmark measuring above the national cohort. Academic Challenge and Active & Collaborative Learning benchmarks each declined four percent since the 2013 administration. Data is weighted by full time and part time enrollment status to compensate for disproportionately large numbers of full time students taking the survey. 63 Student Outcomes Retention, Transfer and Graduation Students are placed in cohorts as they enter MnSCU to facilitate tracking student retention, transfer, and graduation rates. Each cohort refers to the fall semester the student entered North Hennepin Community College. Cohorts are tracked each subsequent term and students who are retained, transferred, graduated are flagged as successes. The fall to fall or second fall Student Persistence and Completion rate of full time students is one of North Hennepin s performance measures in MnSCU s Strategic Framework. The success rate is a combination of retention, transfer, and graduation rates. The system s analytic tool also allows us to look more closely at the outcomes of students with specific characteristics such as full or part time attendance, first generation status, Pell Grant eligibility, and race/ethnicity. Graphic displays of this data are included in the next sections. Currently the system analytic tool only tracks students who enter in a fall terms.
