2 PREFACE This document of SSR has been prepared with utmost sincerity and honesty to the best of our knowledge and belief. This report contains information about Nitishwar College, Muzaffarpur under two major parts, namely Institutional Data and Evaluative Report. The First part includes Profile of the College and Executive Summary. The Second part consists of Criteria-wise Evaluative Report of Departments, Declaration and Undertaking by the Head of the institution and Annexure. Nitishwar Collegeis located at Muzaffarpur city, the district headquarters of Muzaffarpur, and 2 km far from Muz. Railway Station. The catch-up area of College is covered with rural belt populated with poor farmers & laborers, mostly of SC, EBC, OBC and Minority classes. The College has played a great role to uplift and improve the student of this area educationally as well as professionally. The College was established by Hon ble Education Minister Late Nitishwar Pd. Singh, Govt. of Bihar in the year 1970.Almost all the subjects of Science and Arts have been taught here by the learned and skilled teachers. This is the only college of B.R.A.Bihar Univ, Muz, where the teaching of the subject Sociology in both courses of UG & PG is imparted. An experienced and skilled working team of Non-Teaching Staff works here regularly. It was difficult task to complete this SSR without support, cooperation and fruitful interaction with all the members of College family. The first vital role is that of Dr. Abuzar Kamaluddin, the Principal of our College, who constantly inspired us, exhibited solidarity and provided leadership with the Steering Committee for preparing the Self-Study ReportDr. J.K.L. Das, the Coordinator of IQAC extended encouragement and all logistic supports for the completion of the SSR. Other hard-working faculty Dr. Govind Jha, the HOD, Sanskrit, Dr. B.K. Singh, HOD, Sociology, Dr. M.P. Singh, Associate Professor in Chemistry, Prof. J.N. Lal, Asst. Professor in Botany, Dr. Ranjana Sinha, Asst. Professor, Sociology and Dr. Anjana Verma, HOD Hindi of the College worked day and night incessantly to complete the report in the best possible manner. The technical staff Sri Umesh Lal Karn & Prashant Kumar typed and designed the SSR. We are very thankful to all of our colleagues. We are too keen to meet the Peer Team of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council during their forthcoming visit to our institution. 4 Executive Summary & SWOC Analysis of the College Nitishwar College has glorious history. The college prides itself on being a state of highly educated people succeeded in almost all-national competition leading to admission in premier educational institutes and jobs. The College has acquired the recognition in the region as a hub of providing the masses excellent Higher Education in the field of Social Sciences, Humanities and Science streams. This institution has been striving hard to promote academic excellence to inculcate human values and social responsibilities, to mould the students as good citizens of India. Criterion wise Summary I. Curricular Aspects Nitishwar Collegeaspires to play a pivotal role in catering to the needs of this economically and educationally backward area of the northern part of Bihar through comprehensive education and by infusing in the students a spirit of competition and thirst for excellence. Our vision ensures personality and enlightened development of the younger generation through education to build them an ideal asset of the nation. The basic objective of the college is to work for the transformation of the students into responsible and conscious citizens through exposure to carefully prepared and well-designed curricula. While we aspire to fulfill the demands of this backward region of the country.we are also making every effort to groom our young minds to play their respective roles in the task of nation building as India reaches tantalizingly close to the status of a developed country. Since its inception, college is catering to development of competencies, talents and creativity. The perfect transference of knowledge to the masses is our main purpose to educate the students. We want to develop the critical approach, creative thinking and problem solving abilities also to the students. 5 bringing about society that is based on human values. All round development is our aim. Within the existing framework, we attempt to provide inputs for intellectuals, aesthetic, ethical and physical formation. We have evolved innovative methods of teaching and tried to inculcate critical, lateral and rational thinking, thereby contributing actively to formation of intellectual life of students. The college offers following graduate programmes: a. Bachelor of Arts Hons. & General b. Bachelor of Science Hons. c. BCA: Three year s Bachelor Degree: Self-Financing. d. Bio-Technology: Three year s Bachelor Degree: Self-Financing. e. This is the only college of B.R.A.Bihar Univ, Muz, where the teaching of the subject Sociology in both courses of UG & PG is imparted. We are developing our students as skilled workforce for the regional and global employment market. We have initiated training them in vocational courses like Bachelor of Computer Application& Bio- Technology. Although the college has no direct role in modifying and enriching the curriculum suitable to employment market, because it is designed and approved by the University level under UGC guidelines. II. Teaching, Learning and Evaluation Nitishwar Collegeis very much responsive to community s needs in today s fast changing scenario. Primarily, the college aims at maintaining close relationship with the community. At the time of admission, we are monitoring and reviewing the college mechanism. It explains how the admission policies of the college reflect the national commitment to diversity and inclusion. Keeping it in views, college has adopted a transparent admission procedure with inclusion of a proper weightage to the students of weaker section of the society. After the admission, students noticed date and time table/routine by on display banners. The following steps have been taken for the teaching and learning process. a. Introductory classes - It is mandatory to all faculty members to engage two or three classes as motivational classes, subject, its relevance scope, job opportunity and curriculum are focused in details. b. Curriculum based classes. Promote students to use e-books & learning material from our e-library. c. Tutorials d. Organizing Debate, Discussions, Quiz etc. e. Workshops/Special Lectures/Seminars. f. Presentation modes such as PowerPoint and Smart Classes. g. Midterm test & Evaluation. h. Discussion on problems of students which they have faced in the test. i. Providing modern aids like Computers, Internet and Wi-Fi connectivity. j. We are trying to develop the interest level of students to learn Nitishwar College, Muzaffarpur, Bihar Page 5

6 anything. k. Group presentation and interactive activities. l. Preparation for Final Exam. m. We analyze and discuss on feedback and try to achieve the goal. n. Faculty training programmes through Academic Staff College and different workshops, seminars, symposia and e-materials. Evaluation of students has been made in a two-tier system. First, the midterm test, which is organized by the college and it has been evaluated internally. Secondly, the final test offers one year completion of Bachelor degree/honours/general courses is conducted by the university and also evaluated by the university within the university by a centralized evaluation system. Part-III or final examinations of Bachelor degree are evaluated mostly outside the university (external evaluation system). III. Research Consultancy and Extension Our college has the responsibility to support faculty to undertake research project beneficial to the society. To inculcate scientific temper and research attitude in staff & students, a special Seminar & Research Committee is formed with objectives that include publishing research papers and articles, making available research literature, organizing talks with research scholars, informing about funding agencies, various study leaves scrutinizing proposals for Major & Minor Research Projects and conducting/monitoring/ promoting seminars/workshops/symposia etc. Our college teachers are much involved in research work and supervising Ph. D. research scholars registered under them. The college has not yet to accrue monetary benefits of consultancy services. Our faculty members are invited as expert/trainers by other organization. In extension activities, the college has done commendable job. The NSS unit is well recognized in the community for the activities such as Awareness drives on consumer rights, HIV/AIDS Children s rights, Road Safety, Anti Ragging, Voting Awareness, Anti-Tobacco Drive, Anti Drugs, Blood Donation, Plantation, Literary Drive, Swachchh Bharat etc. Participation of NSS Programme Officer as contingent leader and NSS volunteers in the different National and State Level Camps. Some of the NSS volunteers have participated in the National Republic Parade at Rajpath, New Delhi. We take Formal and Informal Collaboration with NGO and Learning Organizations and colleges nearby. The college had organized several programmes and workshops to inculcate moral values among its students and staff, through our unit of NSS. The volunteer students have visited nearby slums and schools for deprived section of the society. The college has rich Sports and Cultural activities. The students been participated in different games & sports in intra college and inter college level competitions. We organize different competitions among the students and NSS volunteers like debate, extempore, quiz, speech, news reading, collage, painting, sketching, funny games, drama, mono acting, mime etc. for their personality development. Installation of interactive Board, projectors, 45 computers, software & many of e-resources. e. Construction of about 2.5 km running Boundary Wall with two main Gates. f. Construction of Women s Hostel. g. Construction of Canteen/ Cycle Shed/ Boy s & Girl s Common Rooms. h. Construction of public Toilets both for male & female. i. Construction of PCC Road in the campus approaching NH-28 (4 lane) to the College building. j. Renovation of Principal Chamber. k. Reconstruction of Library Building l. Computerization of Library and develop it as e-library with LAN networking and software. It is completely online with Wi-Fi facilities. m. Governance, Leadership and Management The Principal, HODs and the faculty members of different departments along with members of various committees of the college are directly and indirectly involved in policy statements and action plans for fulfillment of our mission. The Principal receives the feedback through quarterly meeting of IQAC, HODs different committees, different academic and administrative bodies and staff council take the decision. Students are also encouraged to provide feedback. VII. Innovation and Best Practices: (during the last 4 years) Best Practice I (i) Adoption of a Slum Basti by the College: We have adopted a Nitishwar College, Muzaffarpur, Bihar Page 8

9 Maha Dalit Village (Musahar Basti named Bharthuyiya ), in Mushahari Block, Muzaffarpur nearby the college in this rural area and take care of its developments. We support the children of this poor village by providing them clothes & garments through the College and collaborations of NGOs & other organizations. (ii) Work in Slum Basti by the College NSS unit: The NSS unit of the College has adopted a nearby slum Basti, where people from deprived category are in need. The NSS volunteers organize various awareness programmes and drives like Literacy, Sanitation, Health ---, Voter s right and duty etc. under guidance of NSS Programme Officer. Best Practice II (i) While joining of present visionary Principal Dr. A. Kamaluddin in 2013, the College was neither ICT enabled nor Wi-Fi. These all efforts were made in the guidance of our Principal. (ii) Many of construction & renovation work, installation of power & water supply systems and innovations mentioned above-- have been done under the visionary guidance of present principal during the last four years. 10 About the College: Nitishwar College was established in 1970 by famous social worker & political leader ofnorth Bihar Babu Nitishwar Prasad Singh, former State education Minister, Govt. of Bihar and former acting Vice Chancellor, Muzaffarpur. He along with his bosom friend Babu Birendra Prasad Singh dreamed of this college and this college took shape in their able stewardship to cater to the need of teening masses of either to a backward reason of North Bihar. This College not only imparts Higher education to the backward section of the Society rather pioneer a movement of inclusion with equity & justice. It is a more nature of a social responsibility to shape the destiny of Modern India. It is an Institution which imparts education both at under graduate & post graduate level vis-vis guiding research and exploring new vistas for modern society. Various academic and co-curricular activities have restored the confidence of the surrounding community and we wish to march in progressive way to serve the society by producing quality graduates with employable skills like Computer Literacy, Positive Discrimination and personality development. 11 Opportunity Our college has main three streams of traditional courses. So that students have a vast range opportunity: Different competitive examinations like banking, railway, State Public Service Commission, Union Public Service Commission, SSC, National Defense Academy, CDS etc. Many corporate sector mainly industrial field. Teaching & Research. Skill development among the students. We have to form a strong cell for generating and Lessoning employment opportunities to the students. The biggest challenge at present to face the shortage of teachers in almost all the subject in this college. To enhance fluency in English Communication Skill to the students. To motivate the students for research work. To enhance fluency in Language. Challenges: The challenge of multi-disciplinarily research. The challenge to add significantly to our infrastructure and to add to the basket of courses we offer. To maintain the balance between educational technology and human stature. To generate and liaison employment opportunities to the students in this area of East Champaran. To remain rooted in the proven, core traditions of the College, especially its spiritual foundation, in a secularizing and modern world. To foster a deep sense of commitment in the fresh faculty appointees who hail from different traditions. To grow without outgrowing oneself; that is, to grow without compromising the character and culture of the College. The biggest challenge at present to face the shortage of teachers in almost all the subject in this college. Objectives of curriculum are ensured through midterm evaluation of syllabus taught by faculty members, internal evaluation/examination, feedback from students through their mentors and compulsory 75% attendance in their classrooms. In addition, motivational workshops, seminars etc. are organized at regular intervals to achieve the objectives of curriculum. The college analyses and ensures through the following mechanisms that the stated objectives are achieved in the course of implementation. The college has an Academic Council which takes feedback from teachers, students and other stakeholders. If these objectives are found unachieved or under-achieved, the committee ensures their achievement by removing hassles coming in their way.
