3 The Institute Needs Your Help to Advance the Next Generation of Health Care Leaders The Institute s Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) pairs top minority scholars with leading health care organizations to build the next generation of diverse executives. The SEP provides each participant with real-world work experience, training and mentoring to leverage their education and professional strengths to advance as effective health care leaders. Since 1994, the SEP has been the premier leadership development program for leading minority scholars in health care administration. The cornerstone of the SEP is an internship open to ethnically under-represented first- and second-year health care administration graduate students. This 10 week (June through August), paid internship program places interns in organizations in metropolitan areas around the country. Under the guidance of mentors known as preceptors, students tackle management issues facing health care executives. To complement the on-site internship, the Institute developed a leadership development curriculum. From the moment students apply, they are enrolled in a leadership advancement program designed to prepare them for the preceptor matching process, complement the SEP on-site internship program, and assist them through fellowship and job placement activities. Through the SEP leadership development program, students gain the additional training and coaching necessary to elevate their performance to tackle a full-time leadership position within a hospital or health system. Since 1994, more than 800 interns have successfully completed the SEP program. SEP alumni now serve as hospital CEO s and Presidents, around the country. membership & education specialist, Chris O. Become A SEP Host Site Hospitals and health systems serve as host sites during the onsite, summer internship. The Institute screens each applicant to ensure that the best candidates are matched. Each host site identifies a preceptor to serve as a mentor/supervisor. The Institute then works with the preceptor through the automated match process to ensure that an intern is matched at each site. Identify Host Sites for SEP Interns To be recognized as a national program, the SEP must continue to grow. In order to expand, we need the support in our hospital recruitment efforts. The Institute will collaborate with each association to develop materials to share the SEP opportunity with member hospitals. Help Others to Participate In SEP Your organization can help to sponsor a student at a host site that cannot afford to participate. The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a 10-week paid internship for academically-strong, minority graduate students, preparing them to be the hospital administrators of tomorrow. The Institute for Diversity in Health Management (IFD) is currently seeking proactive health care organizations to host interns for the 2016 SEP. This important program provides hospitals with the opportunity to increase diversity in health care management by offering minority graduate students full-time internships that begin their careers in healthcare. Meet the future leaders of healthcare, today! SEP interns attend the 2014 AHA Leadership and Education Summit in San Diego, CA. Institute staff connects you with top students! Participating organizations have an early opportunity to recruit top students from accredited national health training programs. Qualified applicants post complete profiles to our secure web site and are interviewed by Institute staff. Our staff then facilitates the placement process, presenting the best candidates to you for consideration. We take the hard work out of finding the best intern candidate! Hospitals can also pipeline pre-selected candidates. Host Sites may also pre-select students from a local partner colleges or university and pipeline them through the program. Pipelined students participate in all educational activities and enjoy the full SEP experience. Registration opens Oct. 01, 2015! Internships are May 30 through Aug. 05, Exciting new updates to the SEP program: SEP interns are selected by Institute staff for you! SEP interns will be awarded paid scholarships to attend the 2016 AHA Leadership Summit in San Diego, CA. SEP interns complete a Special Project, which will be a lasting benefit for your organization. The SEP program is cost-effective! The administrative fee of $2,500 covers all costs related to intern screening and matching, SEP Orientation and mentor relationship. Institute members enjoy a $500 discount. The admin fee also includes a complimentary 2016 Institute membership. Host sites pay their intern a stipend of $500 per week. Students work 40-hour weeks, Mon-Fri.
