2 SUMMARY In Fall 2007, there were 551 students on probation.* Of the students on probation, 63% were female and 37% male. The ethnicity of the probation cohort is as follows: Black 51%, Hispanic 16%, Other 12%, Asian or Pacific Islander 9%, and 12% of unknown ethnicity. Of the students who were on probation, 24% were born in the United States, 8% in Guyana, 6% in Jamaica, 5% in Trinidad, and the rest in other countries. 62% of these students have English as their native language and 9% have Spanish. As for majors, 18% major in Business Administration, 14% Liberal Studies, 8% Accounting, 7% Psychology, 5% each in Biology BS and Occupational Therapy BS/MS, and 4% each in Marketing, Social Work, Physician Assistant or undecided. 85% of the students on probation are non SEEK and 15% are SEEK students. 10% of the probations students enrolled through appeal from the admissions committee, 1% are York Scholars, and 2% are ESL students. In addition, 21% have fulfilled the General Education requirements, 5% entered with AAS degree and 3% each with AA and AS degrees. When looking at the high school information, 33% had high school averages between , 32% between , 18% less than 70, and 8% between In addition, 4% of the students earned a GED and 4% each from Jamaica High Sh School and Murry Bergtraum High School. Sh There were 3% each from Richmond Hill, Boys and Girls, Hillcrest, Thomas Edison, and Martin Van Buren High Schools. Among those on probation, 50% entered York originally as first time freshmen and 46% as transfer students. Of those who entered as transfer students, 45% entered as lower freshmen, 22% as lower juniors, 13% as upper sophomores, and 10% as upper freshmen. 23% of the transferstudentsstudents transferred from Queensborough Community College, 11% from Borough of Manhattan Community College, 8% from Kingsborough Community College, and 7% each from LaGuardia Community College and New York City College of Technology. In addition, 29% of them had attended QCC, 13% BMCC, 12% KCC, and 10% LaGuardia CC. The mean number of transfer credits was 41, with a maximum of 85 and a minimum of 0. There were 4 transfer students who entered with an academic deficit. *These 551 students were placed on probation based on grades at the end of the Spring 2007 semester. Grade changes that may have occurred after a student is placed on probation will be reflected in the probation status indicator after the Fall 2007 grades are entered. 2
