Welcome to the first Region 2 Newsletter for the school year. Here, you can share any highlights your chapter may have, while also letting everyone in the region know of any events that will be happening every month. Most of us are still in summer, but we are getting ready to buckle down and begin this year with a bang, since we already got the ball rolling with our first President s Call and NILA being around the corner. Things are also getting busy as we begin to prepare for the Student Leadership Retreat and the National Conference in November. Be sure to plan for the National Conference accordingly, especially with booking flights. Early registration is now open until September 30th, 2016, so be sure to register as soon as possible! I am excited to see what the year has in store for us and let us prepare to have another great year at Two s House. Always remember: Whose House?! Sincerely, Celso Antonio Gomez SHPE Region 2 Student Representative Want to be featured? all newsletter submissions to krystalynlaura0@gmail.com by August 21st, 2016, 11:59 PM. 2 Undergraduate Leadership Team (ULT) 2016 Celso Antonio Gomez Vice Regional Student Representatives Brenda Guadalupe Maldonado Hello, everyone! I am a senior studying Civil Engineering, with a minor in Urban Studies at the University of California, Irvine. I am excited to be a part of the regional leadership team and serve as one of the Vice Regional Student Representatives. Feel free to reach out to me for any questions or concerns! I look forward to working with you all! Diego Alcaide Co-President of University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Jose Ramirez I'm an upcoming senior, Electrical Engineer major at University of California, San Diego. I was first introduced to SHPE at San Diego City College in 2011, and will be the upcoming president from SHPE UCSD. I'm currently an intern at San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). My hobbies include playing soccer and going to the beach. Krystalyn Laura Rey Hipolito Hi, everyone! I am a Child Development & Family Studies major at the California State University, Long Beach. I have been involved in SHPE for 5 years and became a strong advocate for STEM education and outreach community service. I m looking forward to what the future has in store for Region 2! Regional Student Representative Celso Antonio Gomez is a third year mechanical engineering student at CSULB. Over the years, SHPE has provided him with a valuable connection to his community as well as academic support and leadership development. It also furnished mentors who helped him overcome a speech impediment caused by the anxiety of meeting new people. This empowered Gomez to serve as SHPE- CSULB events coordinator and most recently vice RSR. Now he looks forward to re- engaging chapters and sharing helpful tools and knowledge to address their weaknesses. His ultimate goal is to help the Society produce greater numbers of well- rounded Hispanic STEM professionals. Feliciano Montoya Feliciano Montoya has been an active SHPE member since his freshman year at ASU, where he earned his B.S.E. in computer systems engineering. As student chapter president and vice RSR, he helped increase student membership and conference participation, earning accolades for his chapter. As a professional, Montoya has helped with various regional conferences and most recently served as professional chair for RLDC As RVP, Montoya hopes to revive idle chapters and streamline the flow of membership data from national. He will continue the momentum set by past RVP Heidy Arriola with a goal of increasing membership by 25 percent. 2

Los Ingenieros was founded in 1978 with nine Latino engineering students. They all shared common goals and assisted each other in developing the skills necessary in the professional workplace. Since then, Los Ingenieros has grown to more than five times that amount and has also expanded to include all STEM majors, as well as non-stem majors. Our goals are to serve its members, primarily in the Latino/a community, in the advancement of their education and career, and to inspire the next generation of Latino/a STEM college graduates. Los Ingenieros is dedicated to promoting the STEM field towards students of all school levels. SHESS CSULA Our student chapter embodies the principles, Commit to Excellence and Engage in Community through our collaboration and our effective use of resources on our campus and within our community. 3

4 SHPE de ASU SHPE de ASU is one of nearly 60 engineering organizations at Arizona State with over 70 members. Our organization is known for its active presence at engineering activities such as Night of the Open Door, DiscoverE Day, and the Fulton Student Organization and Resource Fair, among others. In addition to its active involvement within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, SHPE is known for its networking with industry and the K12 community. This past year, SHPE de ASU was recognized as the Outstanding Fulton Student Organization of the Year for The success of our organizations would not be possible without the guidance and support of our Advisor Carrie Robinson, who was awarded the Outstanding Fulton Student Organization Staff Advisor Award, as well as, the Diversity and Inclusion Award. SHPE UCI SHPE at UC Irvine has significantly grown and improved as an organization at UCI and as a chapter of SHPE. Winning the Student Organization of the Year at UCI Irvine has definitely shown what SHPE is all about. The Aguas Frescas Fundraiser was the very first event we hosted as the new board members, and we are proud to say that it was a complete success. These recent accomplishments are not only because we increased in number, but because we believe and trust in one another. Our chapter is not just about attending conferences, going to general meetings and participating in socials, our chapter is a special place where students have a home away from home. We share similar family backgrounds, we share similar values, and we share our passion for STEM and higher education. We appreciate and respect honesty, compassion, perseverance and success. We are a familia, and we are proud to be part of a wonderful organization called the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. SHPE at UCI Zot Zot Zot! UCLA SOLES Holding the record for the best taco sales on campus, SOLES is a family of like-minded engineers and scientists at UCLA with a passion for helping students of Hispanic backgrounds feel at home as they pursue a career in STEM. This year, SOLES has put an emphasis on strengthening a community of aspiring engineers, scientists, leaders, and professionals. We are excited to form lasting relationships with chapter in our Region 2 familia and hope you will join SOLES in making this year the best year yet! SHPE PCC 4

5 SHPE Cal Poly Pomona The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Chapter, was created on September 1973 under the name of the Chicano Engineering Organization (CEO). The CEO was created as a result of a few engineering students interested in helping each other achieve success in academic endeavors as well as prepare for a career in engineering and related fields. On the fourth month of the year 1977 the CEO was chartered as a student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and was renamed the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. At the last general meeting of the spring quarter of the year 1983 a majority decision was carried to include science majors and therefore the organization was renamed the Society of Hispanics in Science and Engineering (SHSE). In the year 2014, the bylaws were amended again and the club name was changed back to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Chapter. SHPE CSUN SHPE CSUN is a part of a nationally recognized professional society that provides an environment, which fosters familia, academia, and professionalism. Through the help of a strong social network, diverse interdisciplinary membership, and industry leading alumni support, our members are empowered to achieve greatness through all facets of their lives. Chapter Highlights SHPE CSULB s Soccer Tournament SHESS Cal State LA - Get2gether: Old and New Board Transitions - Summer Strategic Planning Meeting (SSPM): 7 hour intense establishing SWOT Analysis, State Table, SMART Goals and Objectives SHPE CSUN Young Latina Forum 2016 The Young Latina Forum 2016 brought in over 200 female students from neighboring high schools to CSUN to work and experiment in different fields of Engineering and Computer Science. In addition they had the opportunity to hear from professionals in the field where they gained life changing knowledge of how importance female empowerment is in our fields.
