1 H O M E O F T H E E A G L E S January March 2018 From the Superintendent s Desk Dear Friends of the North Central Local Schools, THANK YOU for your support of our schools which supports our mission! The school year is almost half over, and with that brings the Christmas season and the welcoming of a new calendar year. I hope you take time to visit our buildings and see for yourself the great things happening here at NC Schools. We love our kids and community. We have some changes in our schedule starting in January The NCLS will have a professional development day for ALL staff on Friday, January 12, 2018 (additional) which means no school for our children that attend school here in our Pioneer campus. We also have no school on January 15, 2018 as well, which is the following Monday. The 2 hour delay days for professional development that were scheduled for January 24 and March 1, 2018 will be regular days of school with no 2 hour delays. The last professional development day for ALL staff will be Friday, February 16, 2018, which means no school for our children that attend school here in our Pioneer campus. We also have no school on February 19, 2018 as well, which is the following Monday. Reminder: Bus routes are adjusted throughout the school year as students move and new students come to the district. I would like to remind families that students are to be picked up and dropped off at their safe spot. Please be patient with the process. Please contact the transportation director s office if questions arise. The determining factor for delaying or cancelling school is always the safety of our students. Also follow us on and Facebook as we post there first. The AM delays or school closings alerts have been popular this year. The Swiftk12Alert System is a great method of communication for school activities and weather delays. We hope the use of this system is helpful to our staff and parents and gives our students timely information when necessary. If you have any questions or need to make changes, please call Kendra (NC Junior High/High School) at or Julie (NC Elementary School) at The winter sports programs and activities are in full action. Take time to attend an activity and support the students/staff in their extracurricular activities. Senior citizen passes are available in the North Central Athletic Directors Office for district residents who are ages 65 and over. These passes grant free admission to all home athletic events. On a final note, I invite you to become an active part of our school district and to get involved in the lives of our young people by attending as many of the student activities as your schedule allows. 2 Elementary - Principal s Report Parents, It can t be! Christmas Break is here already! Well, it is, and the students deserve some time away from school, but more importantly, time with family during the holiday season. We have completed a 3 rd grade state achievement test, as well as Gifted Testing for our 2 nd and 6 th grade students during this first semester of the school year. I ve been very pleased with the academic progress that your children have shown in the classroom, thanks to your support and Crossing Guard Reminder The safety of our North Central students is of utmost importance. The purpose of the crossing guard is to ensure the students cross the streets safely. Many times drivers are going too fast, are distracted by cell phones, and are North Central Elementary partnered with Toledo Clinic Hematology and Oncology to spread holiday cheer. In the spirit of joy and cheer, students in grades kindergarten through sixth created cards to spread the holiday spirit. The cards were given to the clinic s hardworking nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors and support staff, and these individuals shared the cards with the patients undergoing treatment. These heartfelt cards were made with love and sincerity to brighten the difficult paths endured by the patients. This task not only helped the patients of The Toledo Clinic Hematology and Oncology, but also taught the students of NCES a valuable lesson in doing small things with great love. It was a valuable lesson in teaching students to be positive force in the world to make it a better place to live. Some of the staff the hard work of this fine North Central Elementary staff. Right to Read Week was a huge success in the building a few weeks ago. The staff did an amazing job promoting the importance of reading through a number of creative themes. We thanked the students for a great Right to Read Week assembly. The assembly featured two professional mimes that challenged the students reading and writing skills to tell a creative story in their own words. The students did an amazing job with their cup fundraiser! The profits not stopping for the crossing guards. We all want our children to arrive to school safely and leave school safely. Let's all work together to keep everyone out of getting injured or hurt crossing our roads here near North Central Local Schools. NCES Spreads Holiday Cheer to Local Cancer Patients of Toledo Clinic sent back a photo as they posed with the holiday cards. Hopefully, this can become a yearly tradition at NCES. Happy Holidays! exceeded $5,000 for the building. These additional proceeds will be used for assemblies, awards and other student related activities. 3 January March 2018 Eagle Cafe Hello North Central Families! We in the Eagle Café are always looking to better serve the students and their families. Eagle Trays are now available to any student in grades 7 through 12. Any junior high or high school student can sign up in the Eagle Café by 9:30am and receive an extra entrée of the day for just $1 more. Our ala cart line has seen new items such as beef sticks and Gogurts. As always, all of our ala cart items meet the USDA smart snack rule nutrition standards and are available for grades We have also started sending instant alerts to notify parents when meal accounts are low in balance. These alerts will send automatically whenever the balance drops below 40. Our goal is to provide a tasty as well as nutritious meal. If we are not proud of a meal, we will not serve it. Thanks for allowing your child to join us, The Eagle Cafe Junior High/High School - Principal s Report As we close the first semester of the school year, I am amazed and in awe of the outstanding staff and students I get to work with every day! The first few months have flown by. I am sure second semester will go even more quickly. Some of our accomplishments: 1. Completed successful volleyball and cross country seasons 2. Conducted an off-site evacuation drill 3. Successful parent/teacher conferences--i met several parents and look forward to meeting many more! 4. I am getting to know the students. 5. May 31--Last day for students Marcia Rozevink JH/HS Principal Active Duty Military Display Case At the beginning of this school year, the North Central Local Schools, along with the Agnew Shinabarger Pioneer American Legion Auxiliary Post 307, have begun to recognize North Central alumni who are currently serving in uniform for the United States Armed Forces. Located by the cafeteria, students, staff and visitors will notice a display case with an 8x10 picture of the NC Alumni in uniform. 4 College Credit Plus North Central High School is currently providing information to parents whose child may be interested in being part of the College Credit Plus program for the school year. The purpose of the College Credit Plus program is to provide students who are intellectually and socially capable of doing college work with an additional education option. Students may enroll in full or part time courses for high school and/or college credit. The program is intended to complement rather than replace the high school curriculum. There is no tuition cost to the student, or the student s family, to be accepted into the College Credit Plus program. The college will not charge a student for textbook, materials, or other fees directly related to the coursework. A College Credit Plus meeting will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 6:30 pm at Montpelier High School. All interested students and parents must attend this meeting. Four County Career Center Four County Career Center is an option for Juniors and Seniors. Applicants must be entering their third year of high school, with no less than eight credits. Five of the eight credits must be from the following courses: english, math, science, social studies, health and physical education. Class fees, uniform requirements, and equipment expenses vary by career and technical program. Payment plans are available to students who may be unable to pay these fees. North Central does provide transportation to students attending Four County. Four County school hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. When a student applies to a Four County Career Center program they and their parents/guardians are making a two year commitment. Upon successful completion of a career and technical program and academic courses, Four County Career Center students graduate and receive a high school diploma from North Central. Career Center students will also attend a Recognition Day ceremony where they receive their Career & Technical Certificate of Completion and Career Passport. If interested in Four County, students must apply online at HS Student Council Discount Cards North Central High School Student Council is selling discount cards for our fundraiser and, we still have a few available. The card has 26 local businesses on it, and it is for unlimited use. Valid until September 1, Cost is $10 per card. 5 January March 2018 Kaleb FFA Scholarship Kaleb wasn't a college bound kid, but we wanted to give some kind of scholarship to the NC students. Kaleb loved being in the FFA, especially going to the conventions! We know how hard it was to come up with the funds for Kaleb to go, so we thought we would honor Kaleb's memory this way! Since 2014 we have had the hon- or to present $ in scholarships! This year we were pleased to present the Kaleb FFA Scholarship for these students to attend the State FFA Convention: Erin Ryan, Allison Fenicle, Peggy Michael, Hayden Haas, and Josh Bailey. Any of the FFA students can apply for the scholarship. They just need to see Mrs. Tracey. This is just one of the ways we give back to the Pioneer Community from the Kaleb McLaughlin Memorial Ride and Organ Donation Awareness Day! Kim Oxender NC Hall of Fame North Central Local School System is currently accepting nominations for the North Central Hall of Fame. The requirements for eligibility are: A candidate must have graduated from any school that would have been located in the current North Central School District (Pioneer High School, Kunkle High School, North Central High School) at least twenty years prior to selection. Must exhibit outstanding, noteworthy achievement in areas such as: - Community involvement - Career success and/or unique contribution - Positive role model leadership Nomination forms are available on the school s website at You can also call the school at (419) Scheduling for the School Year Scheduling for the school year will begin in late January. This will affect students who are currently in grades Your child will bring home a registration paper for you to look at. Please take the time to discuss with your child the classes that he or she is planning on taking. There will be a meeting for all 6 th grade students and their parents on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. 6:45 p.m. in the Auditeria. The purpose of this meeting is to provide you with information about junior high rules and procedures and classes your child will be taking in junior high. There will be a meeting for all 8 th graders and their parents on Tuesday, February 6, The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the classes that will be available to them in high school, to present information about the Ohio Graduation Exam, and to explain to you and your child the policies and proce- dures pertaining to the high school.
