4 TRADES CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Our trades credit programs are for those wanting to start a career in one of the trades, as well as those wanting to work as apprentices in their fields. Once you complete one of our trades credit programs, you ll have a vast new skillset which will give you an advantage getting that first job. You ll also have the experience of networking and working with employers during two different week-long practicums. At the end of your program, you ll have the hours and knowledge to choose to continue on to an apprenticeship or to start working right away. 8 wind turbine technician Wind Turbine Technician one-year certificate September or January admission eligible to write BZEE exams for Certificate of Competence The ability to harness the wind to create power is one of the fastest-growing technologies in the world. As a BZEE-certified wind turbine technician from Lethbridge College, you ll be at the forefront of this initiative, whether you are working in southern Alberta or around the globe. The Wind Turbine Technician program is nationally recognized and designed to meet or exceed the internationally recognized standard: BZEE certification. We ll teach you and ensure you receive safety certification on our own equipment and training tower located on our campus. We re one of the few places in the country where you can get this kind of training. 10 APPRENTICESHIPS AND WEEKLY APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING SYSTEM (WATS) parts technician Apprenticeship programs involve eight to 12 weeks of classroom training per year. WATS programs involve one day of training at Lethbridge College per week throughout the length of the program. Both programs offer a combination of work experience and technical training along with on-the-job training. You ll work with an employer and our experienced instructors to gain the best of both worlds as you work and earn money while training. If one of our apprenticeship programs appeals to you, here s what you need to do: if you re not already working in the field, find an employer willing to employ and indenture you. Then contact the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board at Once you re registered, we will have you on your way to writing your journeyman papers and getting that high-paying job in three or four years, depending on which apprenticeship program you choose. Parts technicians have opportunities to work indoors and outside, although they can usually be found in storerooms as they handle stock and identify, catalogue and order parts. As a parts technician, you ll submit bills, receive payments and prepare statements. You ll also use your strength and stamina to be successful in this physical career. 12 automotive service technician Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship four-year apprenticeship As an automotive service technician, customers from all parts of the automotive world will be relying on you to diagnose problems, repair vehicles and light trucks, and complete preventative maintenance. At Lethbridge College, you ll get the classroom theory you need in subjects like fuel and emission control systems as well as the hands-on training employers are looking for. You ll find success in this career with your mechanical aptitude, good hearing, eyesight and manual dexterity. In addition, you ll be sure to succeed if you possess the ability to keep on top of new technologies and have a good understanding of electronics and computer systems. After completing your apprenticeship, you ll find yourself working in various automotive shops and dealerships in southern Alberta or around the country. You may find yourself working in a modern laboratory or outdoors in different types of weather. 16 electrician Electrician Apprenticeship four-year apprenticeship self-paced blended option available Whether you specialize in residential, commercial, institutional or industrial electrical installations, and whether you choose to focus on construction, maintenance or other types of electrical work, your training as an electrician apprentice will give you the skills and experience you need to succeed in this field. As an electrician, you ll use your mechanical aptitude, math skills, ability to distinguish colours, physical strength, stamina, capacity for precision, communications skills and creativity to get the job done. Once you finish your apprenticeship at Lethbridge College, you ll have gained the knowledge and real-world experience needed to be successful in the workforce. 18 Welder Apprenticeship three-year apprenticeship welder As a welder, you ll have a choice of practicing your craft in a variety of different industries, including manufacturing, repair, construction, mining and oil; you ll also have the option of running your own business. At Lethbridge College, you ll learn about the different types of welding as you join and sever metals used for vessels, girders, piping, beams and other metal components. You ll also make metal parts for construction and manufacturing and could find yourself welding parts, machines, tools and other equipment. Your interest in building things, your good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, your patience, your ability to concentrate on detailed work and your ability to work with little supervision all contribute to your success in this inventive career. 24 Plumbing Apprenticeship four-year apprenticeship plumbing Whether you re employed by a construction contractor or a plumbing repair shop, or you are self-employed, your apprenticeship at Lethbridge College will prepare you for a rewarding career in the plumbing industry. As a plumber, you ll work with piping systems that may be used to transport water, waste, gases or hot liquids. Your physical stamina and strength, your mechanical ability and your ability to work alone or with others will help you be successful in this industry. After completing your apprenticeship, you ll have the skills to analyze building plans to determine the materials and plumbing layout needed to successfully complete a project. You ll also be able to cut, thread, bend, clamp, solvent clamp or solder pipe when needed and even find yourself locating the best spots to cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate those pipes. 26 PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRADES TRAINING Rounding out our offerings in the apprenticeships and trades are Lethbridge College s pre-employment trades training programs offered through Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE). Trades employers are reluctant to hire employees with no experience due to the complexity and high cost of machinery and equipment. Pre-employment trades programs in Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, Carpentry and Powerline Technician provide the first year of the Alberta Apprenticeship curriculum as well as various safety certificates to get you started on your path to an apprenticeship. CCE also offers skill development courses (Power Engineering, Master Electrician, etc.), personal development courses (Basic Home Renovations, Small Engine Repair, Basic Welding, etc.), and safety certification courses.

27 Pre-Employment Electrical/Solar Installer Develop skills in solar installation and residential and commercial electrical installation. Subjects you ll study include shop, theory, blueprint reading and trade math. Pre-Employment Welding Gain skills and knowledge to write the first year welding apprenticeship theory and practical exams. The pipeline assistant component of the program also gives you additional job opportunities in the industry.
