4 ABOUT THE FACULTY OF LAW, ECONOMICS AND FINANCE The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) offers three Bachelor programmes, six Master programmes and six Masters of Laws (LL.M.) as well as several continuing education courses. It also includes the Doctoral School of Law and the Doctoral School in Economics and Finance. Over 2,500 students from 90 different nationalities are enrolled at the Faculty. 9 Career opportunities You will find our graduates working in European institutions, national governments, banking and finance institutions, as members of the judiciary or in law firms. Structure of studies Enter into the first year (M1): All LL.M. programmes share a common first year. Applicants who have successfully completed three years of studies amounting to 180 ECTS (typically a Bachelor in law or equivalent studies) are eligible to apply for the common first year. The programme of the first year (semesters one and two) offers a solid common basis in European and international law. Among the courses offered in semester one, six courses correspond to the second year LL.M. specialisations. Students are required to choose their second year specialisation at the end of semester one. The choice between the optional seminars of semester two will be guided by the study directors of the second year. In order to be admitted to the second year students need to have completed the first year (M1 / 60ECTS). Enter into the second year (M2): Students can enter directly into the second year of an LL.M. programme (M2) with the goal of obtaining an LL.M. degree. This requires the successful completion of four years of studies amounting to 240 ECTS, typically by having obtained a Master degree in law or equivalent studies including courses in European law. Students will be admitted upon decision of an admissions committee. LL.M. PROGRAMMES FIRST YEAR A joint first year for all six programmes The first year offers a solid basis in European law and prepares students for the different specialisations offered in the second year of LL.M. studies (M2). The curriculum consists of general and specialised mandatory classes and is complemented by elective seminars. Students choose their specialisation at the end of the first semester, following completion of six mandatory courses covering the six LL.M. programmes available. The programme is taught bilingually in French and English, reflecting the international and multilingual nature of Luxembourg and its University. 11 MASTER EN DROIT ET CONTENTIEUX DE L UNION EUROPÉENNE (LL.M.) The Master is designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge and experience of substantive, institutional and procedural law of the European Union. The programme is based on a method of active learning through critical analysis of case-law combined with the study of EU procedural law. It covers: the analysis of a wide spectrum of EU law, European constitutional, administrative and regulatory law, especially European economic law and the law related to the internal market, as well as specific matters of EU law, such as employment, immigration or external relations law, in-depth study of specific procedural rules and remedies, the analysis of the role of the national judge and the relationship between the Court of Justice of the European Union and the international judge. This Master benefits from the proximity of EU institutions and bodies, namely the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as services of the European Parliament and the European Commission but also the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Court, and the European Investment Bank. Judges, legal secretaries and practitioners are involved in teaching and highly interesting opportunities for internships are offered. 12 MASTER EN DROIT BANCAIRE ET FINANCIER EUROPÉEN (LL.M.) The Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen is one of the premier programmes in this field offered in continental Europe. It focuses on the study of three essential pillars banking law, securities and capital markets law, and investment funds law in the framework of European Union law, Luxembourg law and comparative law. The teaching team includes academics and renowned practitioners, specialised in banking and financial law. Making use of modern and interactive teaching methods, blending individual study and team work, the programme combines the acquisition of basic concepts in the first semester and their practical application in the second semester through case-based learning developed by practitioners. The first semester of the M2 is joint for all students in this specialisation, allowing students to obtain and master the basics of the three pillars of European banking and financial law. In the second semester, the M2 is split into two tracks. The general track aims to deepen and put into practice acquired knowledge, in particular in Luxembourg law and in comparative banking and financial law. The investment fund track offers students further specialisation in this field through the in-depth study of Luxembourg investment funds law, the different types of investment funds, but also a number of specific aspects (taxation, criminal law, rules of conduct etc.), and insights into comparative investment funds law and portfolio management. English and French Graduates from the Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen can pursue employment in legal careers in the banking and financial sector (banks, financial service providers, regulatory bodies, etc.), the insurance sector or the fund industry. They can also find employment in law firms, European banking and financial institutions or national administrations. 13 MASTER IN EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMINAL LAW (LL.M.) This LL.M. offers students a unique opportunity to explore the fast-growing field of European criminal law with a special emphasis on economic and financial criminal law. The programme consists of six successive modules, providing students with an in-depth view into several key aspects of European criminal law, comprising the following areas of European criminal law: regulation and enforcement within the EU, European criminal law and criminal procedure, corporate criminal law and compliance, judicial cooperation and the European law enforcement agencies. In the second semester, each student prepares a Master thesis and participates in an internship, through which he or she will have the opportunity to further expand his or her skills by applying the acquired knowledge to real-life situations. Courses are taught by leading scholars and practitioners, including judges from the Court of Justice of the European Union, EU officials, and partners of leading law firms. 14 MASTER IN EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL TAX LAW (LL.M.) This highly-specialised LL.M. prepares graduates to become leaders in their respective areas of tax expertise be that in a private law practice or accounting firm, in government administration, in the judiciary, or in academia. Students will be prepared to master the general principles of tax law in order to be able to work with new or unfamiliar legal rules, and to successfully recognise issues arising in new taxing jurisdictions, in this everchanging field. Additionally, students will learn to make use of the extensive Luxembourg tax treaty network and gain first-hand exposure to real tax issues and the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union. This programme puts a particular emphasis on the interaction of tax treaty law with domestic tax law, as well as the effects of primary and secondary EU law on domestic tax rules. During the course, students work on several case studies under the supervision of leading tax law firms and participate in research projects organised by the ATOZ Chair for European and International Taxation. 15 MASTER IN EUROPEAN PRIVATE LAW (LL.M.) The Master in European Private Law is among the most innovative Master programmes in EU law. It focuses on the Europeanisation of private law sectors, covering key issues and allowing students to understand how national legislation on private law will evolve in the future. The first semester is devoted to deepening the understanding of European integration and the interaction between EU law and national legal systems, followed by classes on the areas of private law that have been deeply Europeanised (company, labour, intellectual property, and banking and financial law). The second semester is dedicated to legal areas where the influence of European law is indirect but vivid (contract and tort law, law of family and persons, and procedural law). Students are trained to evaluate legal issues in a unique way, encouraging analysis that goes beyond national jurisdictions in order to draw upon European legal sources, and to propose more innovative solutions. Private law is explored through case methods combined with a presentation of the relevant legal provisions. The programme mixes theoretical and practical approaches with students taught how to write memoranda and critical reviews of legislative documents and scholarly doctrines, as well as how to organise various legal events. Students can further deepen their practical experience through monthly workshops with practitioners, a mandatory internship and by benefitting from the clinical programme offered by the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance Clinique du Droit (Consumer Law Clinic) where they meet real clients with real problems. 16 MASTER IN SPACE, COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA LAW (LL.M.) The Master in Space, Communication and Media Law combines a range of courses on space law, communication law, media law, e-commerce law and intellectual property law. It covers these areas on international, European and national level. Over the course of the programme, students acquire complete expertise in the regulatory aspects of space, communication, ICT and media law within an exciting and rapidly developing field, reacting to the increased digitalisation of business and private life. The programme equips students with essential theoretical, practical and analytical skills to excel in the fast-paced legal world of a continuously evolving field. It provides ample opportunities for development in the public and private sector, as well as in academia. International academic partnerships, cooperation with partners in the private and public sector and teaching by academics and practitioners, from within and outside of Luxembourg ensure a vibrant exchange as well as relevant experience for students, both in class, visits and internships. This requires the successful completion of four years of studies amounting to 240 ECTS, typically by having obtained a Master degree in law or equivalent studies including courses in European and/or public international law. Students will be admitted upon decision of an admissions committee. English and French Opportunities for professional development are plenty: whether in the private, public/sector or in academia. The Master in Space, Communication and Media Law is an ideal choice for law graduates, lawyers and even engineers and IT specialists, seeking to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge to formulate and apply law in the digital society and in relation to space/ satellite communications issues. The vast majority of our graduates finds employment directly after completing the Master, for example pursuing a PhD or a bar exam course, or seeking interesting opportunities with locally-based specialised companies, such as SES and Amazon, or law firms and organisations based in Luxembourg, the EU or overseas. 17 MASTER IN ECONOMICS AND FINANCE This Master s programme targets students wishing to obtain a comprehensive and sound education in economics and finance. The programme emphasises the complementary nature of economic and financial theory, quantitative methods, and their applications to policy questions in economics, finance, and business. The goal is to familiarise students with the tools and findings established and used in modern applied research. This is a four-semester programme for full-time students. The first year of courses focuses on core topics in economics and finance. For their second year, students may choose between a traditional track and a research track. The former includes the option of an internship whereas the latter requires a Master thesis. 19 MASTER IN ACCOUNTING AND AUDIT The Master in Accounting and Audit teaches in-depth knowledge of all specialist areas relevant to accounting and audit practice, combing scientific and theoretical course content with practical experience and expertise. Taught in small groups and an interactive setting, the programme promotes independent problem-solving skills through evaluation, analysis and application of knowledge, preparing students for future academic study and the professional world alike. 20 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BANKING AND FINANCE The Master of Science in Banking and Finance offers a comprehensive curriculum encompassing both classic and more recent areas of the finance discipline as well as the principal functions of banking. The cross-functional curriculum provides a dynamic framework of analytical skills and intellectual tools, providing an integrated approach to solving complex banking and financial problems. In addition to a broad range of core courses, students may select one of three streams in which they can obtain a deeper knowledge. Students study with the Luxembourg School of Finance s permanent professors, which maintain close ties to the Luxembourg banking and financial community and engage in leading research, advancing banking and financial knowledge and practices on many fronts. In addition, a roster of invited professors from renowned finance institutes of other universities teach selected courses. The programme also includes a five-day tailor-made programme at New York University Stern School of Business. 21 MASTER IN WEALTH MANAGEMENT The Master in Wealth Management (MWM) is designed to educate and train future wealth managers. The programme combines traditional finance subjects with person-, legal- and tax-centric subjects such as client relationship management, estate planning, ethics and international taxation. Graduates will be able to find jobs in private banks, foundations, family offices, consultancy firms, insurance companies, and investment firms, among others. The curriculum is made up of 27 courses, taught over short intensive periods, a week-in-residence at Singapore Management University, and an internship. The MWM was developed by the Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF) in cooperation with the Private Banking Group Luxembourg (PBGL) to meet the continuous need for talented and well-trained specialists in the continuously growing field of wealth management. Wealth managers can work for private companies, trusts, foundations or family offices, or can be independent advisors. The teaching staff includes leading academics from the University of Luxembourg and other universities, as well as industry specialists with extensive experience and networks in their subject areas. 22 MASTER IN LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT The Master is offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA, by the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LCL). Students acquire fundamental knowledge in the field of logistics and supply chain management. The programme includes a three-week study period at MIT. Throughout the academic year, students work on a Master thesis in collaboration with an industry partner company.
