2 About ABA International & Its Mexico Committee Established in 1878, the American Bar Association Section of International Law (ABA International) is the leader in the development of policy in the international arena, the promotion of the rule of law, and the education of international law practitioners. ABA International is also the only ABA entity that focuses on the full range of international legal issues and is involved in a wide variety of substantive legal activities. ABA International serves over 24,000 members. In addition to private practitioners, the Section s members include approximately 1,500 in-house counsel, over 800 U.S. lawyers living abroad, and more than 1,000 non-u.s. lawyers in 99 countries. The Section of International Law is the ABA home for many of the world s leading international lawyers and serves as the ABA s forum for the discussion of current and emerging issues in international law. The Mexico Committee of the American Bar Association s Section of International Law convenes lawyers in Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere who share an interest in legal matters pertinent to Mexico. The Mexico Committee s activities, in additional to the organization of the June 2012 event in Mexico City, include: (1) presentation of programs at the Section of International Law s seasonal meetings; (2) participation in the Section of International Law s law reform and policy efforts, with current attention through Mexico Committee working groups on competition law, environmental law, secured lending, and criminal justice reform; (3) publication of high quality newsletter on development in Mexican Law in cooperation with the law faculty of the Universidad Panamericana Guadalajara and Mexico City campuses; (4) contribution to the annual Year in Review issue of the Section of International Law s flagship publication, The International Lawyer; and (5) numerous programs in a variety of cities through the Mexico Committee s City Coordinator initiative, such as Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York City, Seattle, and Washington, DC. About the Conference Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. are becoming increasingly integrated and representing an important factor in world trade and investment. Increasing competition from Asia and Europe has increased the importance of strengthening the North American alliance, begun with NAFTA, and expanding the competitiveness of the three partners. This program will focus on important areas, some of which are new, and focusing on issues of particular importance to the West Coast of Mexico, such as the tourism, hospitality, and real estate industries. Government officials from international organizations (Inter American Development Bank) and federal and state governments in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. will present updates on developments in North American integration, and experienced legal practitioners from all three countries will provide detailed programs on changing legal developments of importance to lawyers, corporate executives, bankers, and investors. We are building on our successful programs in Mexico City in June 2011 to the West Coast of Mexico, the site of its recent G-20 meeting and visit by the U.S. President to draw in more participants for the U.S. and Mexican West Coast. The conference will also afford participants time for debate and dialogue with leading experts and ample networking opportunities with colleagues.
