BSEd majors must complete the teaching specialization and the professional education coursework in Secondary Education, including the secondary methods course, SEED 424, 7-12 Language Arts Methods. BSEd majors must complete the teaching specialization and the professional education coursework in Secondary Education, including the secondary methods course, SEED 424, 7-12 Language Arts Methods. 42 Total number of hours required for major, minor, or specialization 120 Total number of hours required for degree The total number of credit hours required for completing the English major (B.A. and BSEd) increases by three. This increase insures that every student will have taken at least one theory course and that some majors (depending on which 12-credit Emphasis they choose) will have taken both theory courses. The existing curriculum, by contrast, makes it possible for a student to have taken none. Evidence the English faculty have gathered from the assessment process, along with anecdotal evidence from students who have gone on to pursue a graduate degree in English, points to the importance that every graduating English major have at least one theory course, preferably two. These theory courses entail mastery of the best recent thinking about the transaction between writer and reader. A new 12-credit Emphasis Media Studies will supplant the 12-credit Desktop Publishing Emphasis. Media Studies is an interdisciplinary emphasis that focuses on the forms and effects of media: radio, film, newsprint, art, television, digital, electronic, web design, and speech communication. As defined by this emphasis, media includes all forms of representational media (oral/aural, written, visual), mass media (newsprint, television, radio, film), and new media (digital multimedia, networked media). This emphasis reaches across various media forms, theoretical domains, and cultural and historical contexts. Technological changes over the past fifteen years have reduced the practical applications of the Desktop Publishing Emphasis to the point where no English major now chooses it. The design for the proposed Media Studies Emphasis is based on a thoughtful survey of Media Studies majors at other colleges and universities. In the 12-credit Professional Writing Emphasis, the substitution of ARTD 113 (Introduction to Digital Media) for ARTD 231 (Graphic Design) is based on advice from the NSU Art faculty. Substantial changes to the Graphic Design course have rendered it unworkable for the purposes of English majors. In the 12-credit Literature Emphasis, specifying that the additional 3-credit course be a literature course keeps the emphasis where it belongs on literature. Page 5 of 5
