1 The Informational Memorandum Update Highlights How many degrees were conferred by UW System institutions during the academic year? UW System institutions conferred 36,487 degrees at all levels. Most degrees conferred were Bachelor s degrees (27,489), followed by Master s degrees (5,551), and Associate degrees (1,703). Doctorate Research/Scholarship degrees (1,011) and degrees at the Doctorate Professional Practice (733) levels comprise the remainder. What were the popular disciplines for undergraduate and graduate degrees during ? The top-three disciplines for undergraduate degrees were: Business (17.8%, 5,195), Health Professions (7.5%, 2,184), and Biological and Biomedical Sciences (7.5%, 2,183). At the graduate level, Business (16.5%, 1,201) and Health Professions (16.4%, 1,198) were the fields with the most graduate degrees conferred, followed by Education (12.8%, 931 degrees). How many degrees were conferred by gender and race/ethnicity? Women earned 54.6 percent of all degrees conferred in the UW System in Doctorate Research Scholarship is the only level where men continue to earn more than half (56.1%) of degrees conferred. Among degrees conferred at all levels, for the second time, over 9 percent (9.2%) were earned by underrepresented minority students. Do UW System institutions confer degrees in high-need and leading-edge fields? One-third (32.6%) of all degrees conferred by UW System institutions during were in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines or Health fields. UW System institutions conferred a record number of degrees in STEM disciplines (8,519) and health professions (3,382) during the academic year. 8 DEGREES CONFERRED BY GENDER Women earned 54.6 percent of all degrees conferred in the UW System in (Table 7). This is a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from 54.8 percent in At the Associate level, degrees earned by women increased from 55.5 percent in the previous year to 55.9 percent. Compared to the previous year, women earned a slightly lower share of degrees at the Bachelor s level, which decreased from 54.7 percent to 54.4 percent, and a higher share of Master s degrees; 56.9 percent versus 56.2 percent. The Doctorate Research/Scholarship degree level continues to be the only level where men were a majority of degree recipients. In , 56.1 percent of Doctorate Research/Scholarship degrees conferred were earned by men. At the Doctorate Professional Practice level, 56.6 percent of degrees conferred were earned by women. 11 DEGREES CONFERRED IN STEM AND HEALTH AREAS Degrees conferred in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Health disciplines are of particular interest. Currently, no national standard definition exists for STEM and Health academic programs. STEM and Health programs are defined in this report using the following CIP 2010 areas: Agricultural Sciences ( , 01.09, 01.10, 01.11, 01.12), Natural Resources and Conservation (03), Computer Science and Info Systems (11), Engineering (14), Engineering Technology (15), Life/Biological Science (26), Mathematics and Statistics (27), Physical Science (40), Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies (30.27), and Health (51). UW institutions conferred 8,519 STEM degrees and 3,382 Health degrees at all levels in , accounting for 32.6 percent of all degrees. Nearly two-fifths (39.1%) of degrees conferred at graduate levels were in STEM or Health disciplines.
