1 The Hayley Petit Injury and Violence Prevention Fellowship Description The Hayley Petit Injury and Violence Prevention Fellowship will give four young women the opportunity to study injury and violence prevention from national experts at the Injury Prevention Center, Connecticut Children s Medical Center. The fellowship is open to all college level females who are US Citizens. Four college student fellows will be awarded $1,000 each and will be required to study at the Injury Prevention Center (IPC), Monday Friday, 8AM 12noon (20 hours per week for 6 weeks, 5/15/17 6/23/17). The application deadline is March 30, Notice of the award will be April 15, The purpose of the fellowship is to provide highly motivated college students with an opportunity to understand the injury and violence prevention field and the mission and activities of the IPC. The fellowship is divided into several components: 1. Background reading/discussion with IPC staff. 2. Review of injury prevention resources (videos, print, injury websites). 3. Prepare and present an Adobe Captivate educational module to the Injury Prevention Center (IPC) team at the conclusion of the fellowship. 4. Attend weekly Pediatric Grand Rounds lectures and case management conferences. Learning objectives 1. To understand the importance (magnitude, cost, preventability) of the injury problem. 2. To understand the conceptual and historical underpinnings of injury and violence prevention. 3. To describe the epidemiology of unintentional injury and violence. 4. To understand general principles of injury prevention and the use of educational, environmental, and legal strategies to prevent injury. 5. To describe the mission and activities of the Injury Prevention Center. 1

2 Background The PETIT FAMILY FOUNDATION honors the memories of JENNIFER HAWKEPETIT, HAYLEY ELIZABETH PETIT and MICHAELA ROSE PETIT by continuing the kindness, idealism and activism that defined their lives. The Foundation's funds are given to foster the education of young people, especially women in the sciences; to improve the lives of those affected by chronic illnesses; and, to support efforts to protect and help those affected by violence. See The primary mission of the IPC is to reduce injury and violence among Connecticut s children, adolescents and adults through research, education and training of students, community outreach programs, and public policy/advocacy. The IPC is a multidisciplinary team and can provide instruction in a wide range of fields including surgery, pediatrics, public health, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and anthropology. As the academic home for the Department of Pediatrics, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, the IPC at Connecticut Children s Medical Center has an established track record of providing education and training for undergraduate, medical, post-graduate students, and residents (pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine). Applicants will provide their own transportation to the IPC offices located at 12 Charter Oak Place, Hartford, CT 3. Applicants must complete and submit the attached application by the above due dates, including the submission of a personal statement (see details below). 2
