4 Higher Education A total of 535,200 people entered UK higher education in 2016, an increase of 0.5% on last year and the highest number recorded, in total 718,400 people applied. A record 238,900 UK 18 year olds placed in 2016; up 1.5% (despite a fall in the population of 18 year olds). Students from lowest income families are more likely than ever to go to HE 80% more than a decade ago! Over 386,300 students placed at their first firm choice in 2016, more than ever before. Women are now 32% more likely to enter HE than men, with 36.8% of UK female students compared to 27.2% of male students in 2016 Over 50,000 undergraduate courses at over 395 providers in the UK More than 1200 separate degree subjects Entry requirements range from 48 UCAS Points to grades A*A*A for a degree course University course fees range from 5,570-9,250 There is a course for everyone research is vital!!! Degree (BA/BSc): - Usually 3 or 4 years - Joint honours study 2 subjects 50/50 - Major minor study 2 subjects 75/25 - Sandwich option a year in industry Year 0 for Foundation Year courses Where students have not studied the relevant subjects for entry, not designed for those who missed the grade Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE): Shorter undergraduate course One year of a degree course Study a further 2 years to top up to full degree Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) Higher National Diploma Foundation Degree Two years of a degree course Study a further 1 year to top up to full degree What type of course students apply for might depend on their grades. 10 Entry criteria Some will ask for grades, AAB, BBB etc, with a specification for certain subjects at L3 or grades in certain subjects. Some will specify grades at GCSE level. 3.5% of UK 18 year olds entered HE in 2016 holding BTECs as their main qualification (UCAS, 2016). Other providers use points. A new points system started for 2017 entry. The new Tariff is based on a different number scale which allows more qualifications to be added to the UCAS Tariff.

Summer Term Start researching - (UCASTV How To Guides) Visit open day events - Register with the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), start application from May 2017 Autumn Term Assess predicted grades with teaching staff in light of AS results/college mock exams Complete Personal Statement Finish Application by November 2017

13 Important Deadlines End May 2017 UCAS APPLY2018 becomes available 18 July 2017 All students to have started an on-line application to UCAS and begin drafting their personal statement. 2nd October th October th October st November 2017 (tbc) 13th November th January th June 2018 Internal deadline if you are applying for Oxbridge, Medical, Dentistry or Veterinary courses. Internal deadline if you are applying to a Russell Group or highly selective university. UCAS Deadline for all Oxbridge, Medical, Dentistry or Veterinary courses. Admissions Tests for some universities in College Internal deadline for all other UCAS applications. UCAS deadline. Applications received by UCAS after this date are entered into Clearing.

16 UCAS APPLY2016 COMPLETING THE APPLICATION Completing the Application CHOICES Maximum of 5 choices Only apply to Oxford or Cambridge Only apply for up to 4 courses in medicine/dentistry/veterinary End of first year exam results (AS and mocks) very important! They are the basis for predicted grades on the university application Check the entry requirements for chosen course on and the university website Compare courses structure, modules, special features, opportunities Students can decide to start their course in 2018 or defer until 2019 They will need to indicate whether they will be living at home or in student accommodation Each university will not know which others they are applying to, students can apply to different courses at the same university.

17 UCAS APPLY2016 PERSONAL STATEMENT Personal Statement THE PERSONAL PAPER INTERVIEW! 47 lines/4000 characters to sell themselves to the Admissions Tutor. Very important part of the application, if it s a course that interviews students this will secure the interview Students explaining what they want to study and why Same personal statement used for every course they are applying for, therefore their 5 choices need to be similar to secure successful offers Lots of support in College Presentations for students from universities in March Personal Statement Writing Workshops

18 So the application is finished what happens now? Check it through with Tutor Tutor will advise a student pay & submit in UCAS APPLY2018 Log into APPLY2018, pay for application using a debit/credit card. 13 for one course choice, 24 for 2-5 choices. UCAS Conservatoire application is 24 (based on 2017 entry fee charges). College adds academic reference to application Application is checked thoroughly by different staff Student Services then submit application to UCAS. It is vital that students keep checking their s as we may need to contact them if we spot an error on their application! Look out for mail from UCASProblem as it will need a response!

19 Competitive Applications Mock interviews and feedback Personal Statement & interview prep for Oxbridge medics and courses allied to health specifically. Oxford & Cambridge attend HE Fair in March and deliver a talk to prospective students 1 st year students mentored by our successful 2 nd year Oxbridge/Medical students MMI (mini multiple interview) practice for those who require it. Support with portfolio/written work which needs to be submitted. Support for assessment tests offered by subject staff and generic sessions e.g. QTS, numeracy assessments

20 Work Experience and Volunteering Essential for some courses (e.g. teaching, medicine, nursing, social work) Gives a valuable insight into the profession Enhances the application details must be included in the personal statement Contact our Careers & Work Experience Team Request a placement via the College Intranet

23 Financing Study Student Finance England provide financial support on behalf of the UK Government to students from England entering higher education in the UK: The two main costs full-time students will have while studying are tuition fees and living costs. SFE make finance available to help students with both Depending on their circumstances, course and where they study, students may be able to get a range of financial help and support. This includes bursaries (which don t have to be paid back) and loans (which do). TUITION FEE Loan Extra support SECTION 3 Maintenance Loan

24 Common Concerns STUDENT FINANCE Common Concerns! My i! Debt! child can t afford to go to university, it s far too expensive! i Regardless of household income, eligible students No eligible students will have to pay their tuition fees up-front to go to university or college* from a student loan will be unmanageable! can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to help with the cost of fees, and a Maintenance Loan to help with their living costs i The amount they repay will only increase with their earnings as repayments are based on their income, not how much they ve borrowed i Repayments don t start until your child s income is over 21,000 a year. They ll then repay only 9% of their income over this threshold *Studying a designated course at a publicly funded university or college

25 Bursaries & Scholarships Many universities and colleges offer financial support to their students through bursaries and scholarships Bursaries: Linked to personal circumstances and often, household income Awards can include fee waivers or cash Scholarships: Can be linked to academic results or outstanding ability in an area such as sport, music or art Can be subject specific and are limited in numbers If you want to work out what you might be eligible for see: (currently 2017 figures) Important to check university websites early and ask at open days for information on available bursaries & scholarships

26 Additional Support Extra support may be available to students who: Have children or adults dependent on them Have a disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty NHS courses From 2017/18, new students in England will take out loans like other students rather than getting an NHS grant. This affects courses that lead to professional registration in: nursing (all four fields), midwifery, paramedic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, podiatry, radiography, dietetics, orthoptics, operating department practice, and prosthetics/orthotics.
