A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above. Students on academic probation are not eligible to apply. Completed prerequisite courses for academic credit offered with specific study abroad programs Program Overview This program will give Northwood University students the opportunity to complete a course and travel in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is an island nation in the Caribbean nation, and it has a rich cultural and historical heritage. It was first explored by Spaniard Christopher Columbus in 1492, and its capital, Santo Domingo was founded in 1496, the oldest settlement begun by Europeans in the Western Hemisphere. Christopher Columbus is buried in Santo Domingo. In 1844, the Dominican Republic gained its independence and today, it is a representative democracy. Today, over 9 million people live in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is roughly twice the size of the state of New Hampshire, and its geography ranges from rugged mountains to coastal plains and beaches. The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country, with mountains, pristine beaches, and colonial architecture. It is also a culture based on Latin American customs and mores. The Roman Catholic Church is still a very powerful presence in the daily lives of many of the citizens. The program will be based in Santiago, and student will attend class on the campus of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santiago, which is a city of about five hundred thousand people. PUCMM is a private, Catholic university with about 20,000 students and is one of the largest colleges in the Dominican Republic. When not in class, students will have the opportunity to study and to explore Santiago. The program will also include a weekend visit to Santo Domingo, a city of some 2.2 million that is the capital of the Dominican Republic. The lodging in Santiago will be unique and will provide a wonderful cultural experience for students. During their time in Santiago, students will be housed with host families who live around the perimeter of the PUCMM campus some level of fluency in Spanish is desired. Students will be in a hotel during their weekend in Santo Domingo and Samana Bay. The travel schedule is as follows: NOTE: When traveling abroad, flexibility is important. Sometimes plans need to be adjusted, so the schedule is subject to change. Students who are accepted into the program will receive a number of updates with more specific details regarding travel and the program. There will be some free time built into the schedule so that students may explore on their own. May 12 May 14 May May Depart for arrival in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Departure for Santiago Class and Cultural Activities in Santiago Weekend in Santo Domingo Depart Santo Domingo for return to US 2

ECN 3850: Special Topics in Economics may be used as a substitute for a civic or general elective. Students will complete all pre coursework, assignments while in the Dominican Republic, and post coursework due after the program. The course is designed for sophomore, junior or senior level students. The course will include: Two pre-departure orientation sessions (a pre-trip assignment is due at each session) Travel to Dominican Republic where students will visit various sites. Faculty Leader Dr. Carolina Lopez will be the program leader and instructor for SOC Dr. Lopez is a native of the Dominican Republic, and is a Professor of Language Arts, Mathematics and Spanish at Northwood University. She received her Licentiate (B.A.) in Architecture and Urban Design, from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Santo Domingo, her Masters in Architecture from the University of Florida, and her Ed.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. López has previously taken several groups of Northwood University students to the Dominican Republic. Professor Cliff Harris will be the instructor for ECN 3850 which will be a Special Topic. Prof. Harris holds a (B.A.) in Political Science & International Relations from Oakland University and a (M.A.) in Economics from Walsh College. Professor Harris has taught students in Sri Lanka and China on multiple occasions. Travel, Passports, and Visas All students participating in this program will depart together from the U.S. (Detroit, Flint, or Saginaw), and return together at the end of the program. Roundtrip airfare is part of the program fee, and Northwood University will purchase air tickets for all students. Individual students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the departing airport. You must have a valid passport to participate in this program. ***Obtaining a passport is YOUR responsibility. You MUST have your passport in hand when you return your application. The passport number will be needed at that time for insurance purposes. *** Students need to have a passport that is valid for at least six months following the date of their return to the USA. 3

4 American citizens will not need visas, but must pay an arrival fee of approximately $20 and complete an arrival card upon disembarking at the airport in Dominican Republic. NOTE: Those who do not hold American citizenship should check with the International Programs Office at regarding the need for a visa to travel to the Dominican Republic. Safety and Security Safety is a prime concern of all who are involved in study abroad ventures participants, their families, advisors, administrators, hosts, etc. Though it is impossible to eliminate all risk from travel and study abroad, the Dominican Republic is generally quite safe. U.S.-based Northwood staff will monitor political developments throughout the time leading up to departure and then throughout the program in order to assess safety and security issues. Students should always travel in groups and take caution to protect their valuables, including backpacks, wallets, purses, and passports. Northwood University generally cannot assure that U.S. standards of due process apply in overseas legal proceedings or provide or pay for legal representation for participants. In the event of an emergency, Dr. Lopez will be available throughout the program, and will be in regular contact with staff at Northwood University. It is also important for students to keep in regular contact with their families throughout the program. Standards of Behavior For this program, it is essential that each participant make an effort to get along with everyone else and to be courteous to our campus hosts and host families. Students will be asked to review and sign a standards of behavior document prior to departure. A student who disregards these standards, in spite of warnings, may be dismissed from the program. Health Considerations Though it is very rare that persons would be exposed to or contract any serious illness or disease while in the Dominican Republic, basic precautions are in order. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has information related to traveling in all areas of the Caribbean. Northwood recommends that students review the CDC information and consult with their physician at least 6-8 weeks prior to departure about any personal medical conditions or about receiving vaccinations before traveling. It is the student s option and responsibility to consult with his or her physician and obtain any vaccinations. Students may wish to take the anti-malarial treatments before going to the Dominican Republic. The CDC website has more information on this treatment. Costs and Financial Aid The basic cost for the program is $3850 per person. 4
