2 GREEK AWARDS PACKET Greetings! Enclosed you will find the complete 2018 Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards information and application packet. All award applications submitted should recap achievements during the 2017 calendar year (January-December 2017). WELCOME We hope to make this year s awards presentation the biggest and best it s ever been. As members of our community, we want to see all chapters apply for awards and also encourage chapters to nominate each other and/or members that are not in your chapter. At the final event, our hope is for everyone to support and cheer on their interfraternal brothers and sisters as we celebrate being members of fraternities and sororities! Fraternity & Sorority Life Florida Gulf Coast University Spring 2015 Nominations are due Sunday, February 4, 2018 by 11:59 pm via Eagle Link at NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Please remember that your chapter does NOT have to nominate for every award category and you may also nominate other chapters/individuals from other chapters for awards that you feel they deserve. Remember this is about celebrating excellence throughout our Greek community! Also, note that to be eligible for an award an application and submission must be entirely filled out. NO EXCEPTIONS. 4 Chapter of the Year Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who demonstrate overall chapter excellence across all areas, including chapter academics, leadership, service, accountability, etc. The chapter is recognized as leaders on campus, support their respective council, and are involved in the community and University. Greek Relations Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who demonstrate a sense of Greek Unity and a spirit of inter-fraternalism in Campus Leadership Involvement Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) whose members are involved in leadership positions in Registered Student Organizations and campus departments, while making a positive impact on the FGCU campus community in Philanthropy Awareness & Education Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who hosts the best philanthropic event to raise awareness and education for a specific cause on or off campus in Money raised can be included, but is not required as part of the event. Community Service Volunteer Relationship Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who have established a positive and ongoing volunteer relationship with a non-profit organization in This may or may not include money raised and donated to the organization. Best Collaborative Event of the Year Award This award will recognize the chapters (Two or more organizations) who plan and execute, an exceptional collaborative program exemplifying the standards of the Greek community, through either service, education, camaraderie or a combination of all. Highest GPA Award This will be awarded to the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) that has earned the highest cumulative term chapter GPA for the 2017 Fall and Spring semesters. Most Improved GPA Award This will be awarded to the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) in which have had the most drastic improvement from Spring 2017 to Fall 2017 GPAs. Outstanding Academic Plan Award Page 3 This will be awarded to one chapter in which shows an exemplary academic plan. Which highlights the chapters continued commitment to excellence in scholarship.

5 INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Outstanding Risk Management Plan Award This will be awarded to one chapter that submits an exemplary Risk management plan to the Office of Student Involvement. The plan should highlight the chapters continued commitment to safety and compliance. Fraternity Man/Sorority Woman of the Year (Given at Leadership and Involvement Awards) This award will recognize the individuals) who have given his/her time and talents to his/her chapter and council. The member should have high achievements in academics, service, character, and be an overall role model for the entire community. The member lives his/her values and holds others accountable. New Member of the Year Award This award will recognize the individuals who have been involved as new members/neophytes since joining/crossing in his/her organization. These individuals have become leaders within their peer group and are viewed as the up and coming leaders who will play a vital role in the future of the organization and the community. Unsung Hero Award This award will recognize one fraternity man and one sorority woman who are involved in their chapter, council, and campus community. These individuals are leaders within their peer group and are viewed as the current and next leaders who will play a vital role in the future of the organization and the community. Scholarship Excellence Award This award will recognize the one fraternity man and one sorority woman who have achieved high standards of scholarship. These individuals have balanced their time to succeed not only in the classroom, but within their chapter and council as well. Chapter President of the Year Award This award will recognize the individuals (one sorority woman and one fraternity man) who have led his/her organization as president during 2017 (all-year, or either semester, depending on terms). These individuals are leaders within their peer group and have positively impacted their organizations leaving them in a better place than where they started. They are the alumni who will come back and continue to give their time and energy to the organization and community. Council Executive Board Member of the Year Award This award will recognize the individuals who have led his/her council 2017 (all-year, or either semester, depending on terms). These individuals are leaders within their peer group and have positively impacted their councils leaving them in a better place than where they started. They truly embody Greek Unity and work to advance their council and the overall community. Advisor of the Year Faculty/Staff /Alum/Volunteer Award Page 4 This award will recognize the individuals (one sorority advisor and one fraternity advisor) who have actively and successfully advised a Greek organization in These advisors truly go above and beyond the call to advise the chapter, meeting regularly with the chapter members, attending chapter meetings and events, and establishing mentoring relationships with the members.

6 SOAR AWARD SOAR Award This award will recognize members for his/her achievements and leadership in the fraternity and sorority community and FGCU overall. He/she will exhibit standards of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and be an exemplary representative of the community. All eligible members must be in good standing and listed as active membership with his/her chapter, respective council, and FGCU. Must hold a minimum FGCU cumulative GPA of 3.0, have at least 60 credit hours and must have been enrolled as a FGCU student during the 2017 calendar year. Self-nominations will not be accepted. One letter of recommendation ( words) from nominator. Recipients will be selected by the Office of Student Involvement and University faculty/staff. There will be a total of up to ten recipients for this award from the community. Page 5

7 Chapter of the Year Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who demonstrate overall chapter excellence across all areas, including chapter academics, leadership, service, accountability, etc. The chapter is recognized as leaders and role models on campus, support their respective council, and are involved in the community and University. Must be in good standing with the University and respective council. This means organizations may not have been on disciplinary probation in 2017 or found responsible for any conduct violations in One letter of recommendation ( words) from a creditable partner outside of organization to describe impact to the community can be faculty/staff or member of the greater community, but not an FGCU student One letter of recommendation ( words) from within the organization to describe impact to the community can be from a fellow chapter leader, governing council executive board member, advisor, or national office, etc. Narrative from chapter to include programs, achievements and other awards, recruitment successes, membership education/development programs, risk management programs, etc. This narrative should also include the reason why this organization should be selected above other fraternities/sororities for is deserving of this award. There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity awarded from the community. Page 6

8 Greek Relations Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who demonstrate a sense of Greek Unity and a spirit of inter-fraternalism throughout Chapters will have shown that they go above and beyond, to make lasting connections across all councils of the community. Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Must be nominated by another organization; self-nominations are not allowed. One letter of recommendation ( words) from a student leader outside of the organization to attest to the impact to the community Narrative from nominator to include specific examples and reasons why this organization is deserving of the Greek Relations Award. There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity awarded from the community. Page 7

9 Campus Leadership Involvement Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) whose members are involved in leadership positions in Registered Student Organizations and campus departments, while making a positive impact on the FGCU campus community in Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. (Example E- board, Student Government, RA, Tutor, Peer Advisor) Recipients will be selected by, the Fraternity There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity awarded from the community. Page 8

10 Philanthropy Awareness & Education Award This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who hosts the best philanthropic event to raise awareness and education for a specific cause on or off campus in Money raised can be included, but is not required as part of the event. Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Narrative from nominator describing event, how it raised awareness and education for a non-profit organization or cause, and how why the event was successful. & Sorority Life staff. There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity awarded from the community. Page 9

11 Community Service Volunteer Relationship This award will recognize the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) who have established a positive and ongoing volunteer relationship with a non-profit organization in This may or may not include money raised and donated to the organization. Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Narrative from nominator describing volunteer relationship, activities/events throughout the year, and the benefit of this relationship to both parties. Letter of recommendation ( words) from, the non-profit agency, confirming the volunteer relationship, and describing the benefits of this relationship to the organization. & Sorority Life staff. There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity awarded from the community Page 10

12 Best Collaborative Program Award This award will recognize the chapters (Two or more organizations) who plan and execute, an exceptional collaborative program exemplifying the standards of the Greek community. Through either service, education, camaraderie or a combination of all. All organizations must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Written statement ( words) highlighting why this program was exemplary of the standards of the Greek community. Documentation of event and participating organizations as well as roles and contributions in the event. Include pictures highlighting event. There will be one program selected from the community. 13 Highest GPA Award This will be awarded to the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) that have earned the highest cumulative term chapter GPA, for the 2017 Fall and Spring semesters. Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Taking from annual grade report. Recipients will be selected by the Fraternity There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity selected from the community. Page 12

14 Most Improved GPA Award This will be awarded to the chapters (one sorority and one fraternity) in which have had the most drastic improvement from Spring 2017 to Fall 2017 GPAs. Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Will be taken from the community grade report. Recipients will be selected by the Fraternity There will be up to one sorority and one fraternity organization awarded from the community. Page 13

Must be in good standing with the respective council, office and university. Submit personal letter ( words) highlighting how your chapters academic plan exemplifies your chapters commitment to scholarship and academic success. Must submit chapter academic plan. There will be one organization awarded from the community. Page 14

16 Outstanding Risk Management Plan This will be awarded to the chapter that submits an exemplary Risk management plan. Which highlights the chapters continued commitment to safety and compliance. Must be in good standing with the respective council and office. Submit personal letter ( words) highlighting how your chapters risk management plan exemplifies your chapters commitment to safety and compliance. Must submit chapter risk management plan. There will be one organization awarded from the community. Page 15

17 Fraternity Man/ Sorority Woman of the Year This award will recognize the individuals (one sorority woman and one fraternity man) who have given his/her time and talents to his/her chapter and council. The member should have high achievements in academics, service, character, and be an overall role model for the entire community. The member lives his/her values and holds others accountable. Must be in good standing with his/her chapter, respective council, and the University Must have a minimum FGCU GPA of 2.75 Must have been enrolled as a full-time student at FGCU in 2017 Recommendation letter ( words) from nominator describing the nominee, service, involvement, character, and academics, and why he/she should be selected over other members from the community. If self-nomination, a personal letter ( words) from someone else with similar information must accompany the recommendation in place of the narrative. There will be one member from selected from the community Note: This Award will be given out at the Dean of Students Leadership & Involvement Awards and recognized at the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards Ceremony. 18 Unsung Hero Award This award will recognize the individuals who are involved in their chapter, council, and campus community. These individuals are individuals that go above and beyond the call of duty, but rarely receive recognition. Must be in good standing with his/her chapter, respective council, and the University Must have a minimum FGCU GPA of 2.75 Must have joined/crossed prior to 2017 Cannot hold a chapter E-board position (not including chairs) Must have been enrolled as a full-time student at FGCU in 2017 Recommendation letter ( words) from nominator describing the nominee, service to organization and/or council, involvement, character, and academics, and why he/she should be selected over other members from that council. There will be up to one sorority woman and one fraternity man selected from the community Page 17

19 New Member of the Year This award will recognize the individuals who have been involved as new members/neophytes since joining/crossing in his/her organization. 22 INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Advisor of the Year Faculty/Staff/ Alum/Volunteer This award will recognize the individual who has actively and successfully advised a Greek organization in These advisors truly go above and beyond the call of duty to advise the chapter, meeting regularly with the chapter members, attending chapter meetings and events, and establishing mentoring relationships with the members. Must have served as chapter faculty/staff advisor in 2017 and be on file with the Office of Student Involvement Recommendation letter ( words) from nominator describing the relationship, commitment, contributions, and support given to the chapter above and beyond regular expectations, in addition to why the individual should be selected over other nominees. There will be up to one sorority advisor and one fraternity advisor awarded from the community Page 21

23 INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Scholarship of Excellence This award will recognize the individuals (one sorority woman and one fraternity man) who have achieved high standards of scholarship. These individuals have balanced their time to succeed not only in the classroom, but within their chapter and council as well. Must be in good standing with his/her chapter, respective council, and the University Must have a minimum FGCU GPA of 3.50 Must have been enrolled as a full-time student at FGCU in 2017 Narrative from nominator describing the nominee, his/her academic achievements and dedication, chapter/council/community involvement, and why he/she should be selected over other members from that council. If self-nomination, a recommendation letter from someone else with similar information must accompany the nomination in place of the narrative.
