1 Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education Requirements Guidelines for University Admissions For American High School Diploma A. General Guidelines for international certificates: 1. Subjects that will not be considered among the 8 required or optional subjects for university admissions are: General Science, Arabic, Religion, Physical Education, Music and Military Science. 2. Students who do not pass in Thanaweya Amma (grades 12) Arabic and Religion Exam need to pass these exams at the university they are attending before they can graduate from university and receive their Bachelor Degree. 3. Students applying to university must have 3 years of schooling after obtaining the Adadeya (grade 9) certificate or its equivalent or 6 years of schooling after obtaining the Ebetedaya certificate (grade 6), or 12 years in international education. Students who do not fulfill the above requirement will not be accepted to university until they have completed this requirement and must apply for admission the following year according to admission guidelines of the academic year in which they are applying. 4. IMPORTANT UPDATE: If the number of applicants to a particular university holding foreign certificates is less than 100 students, including American High School diploma, then the following minimum percentages will be applied: Minimum requirement of 90% for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Veterinary, Economics and Political Science, Mass Communications, and Archeology. Minimum requirement of 85% for Engineering, Computer and Information Technology, and Fine Arts (Architecture). B. Guidelines for accepting American High School Diploma: 1. Students should pass 8 subjects from those required for each faculty (details on page 63-64) after completing grade 12 each subject must be at least one credit and a maximum of 3 subjects may be taken from grade 11. (Some private universities, such as GUC and BUE, may accept 2 subjects from grade 10). 2. The minimum required new SAT I score is 1050 out of 1600 (1440 out of 2400 old SAT) to be accepted to public or national universities. (See section C-4 for private universities). 3. The minimum accepted SAT II score is a total of 1170 in 2 subjects out of 1600 as follows. (See section C-4 for private universities).

2 For the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing, the 2 subjects required are Biology and one of the following: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. For the faculties of Engineering, Information Technology, Computer, Fine Arts (Architecture section), and Urban Planning, the 2 subjects required are Mathematics and one of the following: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. C. In addition to the above, the Supreme Council for Universities has decided the following: 1. American Diploma students will be accepted only after completing a minimum of 3 years in the American system of education. 2. All other guidelines and conditions for acceptance to universities in Egypt previously set by the Supreme Council for Universities shall be implemented for American Diploma students. (See section D for grade calculation guidelines). 3. SAT II results will only be accepted if they are taken in the same year the American Diploma is received and not after graduation date. 4. The Supreme Council of Private Universities has accepted the following in calculating the American Diploma: a. Minimum SAT I score of 890 on the new SAT (1200 out of 2400 old SAT). b. Minimum SAT II score of 980 out of Students who did not achieved the minimum SAT I score are allowed a maximum of 2 years after high school graduation to improve their SAT scores. 6. The Supreme Council of Universities has announced the approval of the Ministry of Education to accept the scores of SAT exams taken by students outside Egypt. 7. The Supreme Council of Universities accepts the SAT I and II scores received from College Board on their website using the code 7437 and will add highest scores received from each exam, i.e. superscore the highest Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing scores. D. Guidelines for grade calculation and evaluation of American High School transcripts: 1. 40% from the average of the 8 subjects required (usually 5 from grade 12 and 3 from grade 11 as previously mentioned) % from the total SAT I score as follows: The best SAT I scores will be chosen from each session (superscore) as long as the minimum score is 1050 for public universities and 890 for private universities. Those who achieve 1090 on the new SAT will receive an additional 15%.

3 Students who took the SAT II will have an additional 15% added to their score provided they achieve a minimum of 1170 in 2 subjects for public universities and 980 for private universities (maximum is 800 x 2 = 1600). IMPORTANT UPDATE: For students who are in grade 11 in 2017/2018, i.e. entering university September 2019, the Supreme Council of Universities has announced that the maximum score to be earned will be 100%. If a student doesn t take the SAT II, the calculation will be as follows: 40% from the average of 8 subjects + 60% SAT I. For students who take the SAT II, the calculation will be: 40% from the average of 8 subjects + 50% SAT I + 10% SAT II, and no bonus percentages will be added.

4 Courses Considered for University Admissions All universities and colleges in Egypt, with the exception of the American University in Cairo (AUC), follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education. The 8 subjects required are calculated as follows: a minimum of 5 subjects from grade 12 and a maximum of 3 subjects from grade 11. Some private universities such as German University in Cairo (GUC) and British University in Egypt (BUE), however, may accept a maximum of 2 subjects from grade 10 if necessary. Must obtain a minimum of 70% in the first foreign language. Pass entry tests held at the Faculty, personal interview and medical checkup. Pass entry tests held at the Faculty. Must obtain a minimum of 75% in Arabic Language, first & second foreign languages. Students who didn t take a second foreign language must pass an exam with a minimum grade of 75% before moving to the second year of university. Updated August 2017
