3 Why are your students here? Year 12 is a stepping stone to either tertiary study, TAFE study or employment. It is an important year because better results provide students with more opportunities and choices in BUT - It is also about the students destination or pathway and the most important consideration for teachers and parents is that the students achieve the results required to get them to their chosen destination

4 Goals ideas? At the retreat all students were encouraged to set goals for themselves and investigate the pathways they want to take in As parents you can aid students by talking to them about their destination and plan B.

5 2013 Cohort Destinations FIRST ROUND OFFERS SUMMARY REPORT YEAR 12 COHORT 119 VCE students 7 Senior VCAL students Total Cohort 126 Number of VCE students with an ATAR 106 Number of VCE students without an ATAR 13 (3 students did not successfully complete their VCE) 123 students were eligible to apply for further education through the VTAC System. Number of VTAC Applicants 99 students % of the eligible VCE/VCAL cohort (85% of eligible VCE cohort) No VTAC Application 24 students % of eligible VCE/VCAL cohort Destinations and intentions students with No VTAC Application = 27 students 6 Employed Full Time 6 Studying Full Time 5 Apprenticeship 4 Pre Apprenticeship 5 Seeking Full time employment 2 Unknown PREFERENCES AND FIRST ROUND OFFERS 98 students received a first round offer. The one student who did not receive an offer, changed his mind about pursuing a tertiary education and therefore chose not to proceed with his application by listing appropriate preferences. Hence it can be stated that 100% of the applicant group with the intention of pursuing tertiary education received a VTAC offer. 57 students received their first preference 89 students receiving an offer for a course in their first 4 preferences (87.2% of all VTAC applicants) 93 students received an offer for a course in their top 6 preferences. Only 4 students received their 7 th, 8 th, 9 th or 10 th preference Types of Offers UNIVERSITY / Providers of Higher Education 72 students ( 73% of all VTAC applicants received a university offer) 91 students with university courses as their first preference (79% of this group achieved that goal) TAFE / other VET providers 26 students received an offer for VET courses (certificate IV, Diploma or advanced Diploma) at TAFE or other Independent VET Providers 8 students listed VET courses at TAFE or a Private Provider as their first preference

10 Who to contact: All initial communication should be directed to the homeroom teachers. They work with the students on a daily basis. Subject concerns should be directed to the subject teacher. The YLC and VCE coordinator are always available for contact if required but HRT s should be the first point of contact.

11 Communication All student notices appear on SIMON (Parents should have access through the Parent Portal) All subject teachers are available for communication nightly and on weekends.

12 Unsatisfactory Progress Notice This form is designed as an intervention to aid students when they are struggling to maintain the standard required. Parents will be sent home notices to inform them. After three notices a review meeting will be held with the YLC and appropriate staff to resolve any issues.

13 Teacher Advisor Program This program will run throughout the year and will focus on student study skills and work habits. All students have been placed into small groups which will meet regularly (Weekly) and discuss issues and provide strategies for students academic progress.

14 Key Dates Term 1: 29/1 28/3 (10 Weeks) Term 2: 22/4 27/6 (10Weeks) Term 3: 14/7 19/10 (10 Weeks) Term 4: 6/10 17/10 (2 Weeks) GAT (General Achievement Test): 11/6 VCAA Unit ¾ Exams: 29/10-21/11 Year 12 Graduation Mass/Dinner: 21/11 (TBC)

15 Terminology SAC: School Assessed Coursework SAT: School Assessed Task VCAA: Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority VTAC: Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre VCE: Victorian Certificate of Education ATAR: Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank GAT: General Achievement Test Outcome: The criteria for knowledge and skill development. Each subject at Year 12 has roughly 5 major outcomes through out the year.

16 Two Qualifications 1. VCE S/N Result Minimum 16 Units Combination Units ½ and ¾ Must include 3 units of English 2. ATAR Study Scores = Ranking Must satisfy VCE requirements Must include a ¾ sequence in English Used as the direct pathway into further study

17 Assessment Each subject is assessed in two ways: 1. S/N result for VCE 2. Study Score result for calculation of ATAR SAC s make up the assessment tool for both in most cases. A SAT will be used in folio based subjects such as VCD. A SAC is a timed in class assessment that requires an application of the knowledge and skills learnt for an outcome. Most subjects have 5 SAC s throughout the year. (SAC s make up the assessment for the VCE. The end of year exams are for ATAR only.)

18 SAC s SAC s are VERY important because they are an assessment and the result contributes to both qualifications at Year 12. It is extremely important that students are present for all of their SAC s and are prepared. A SAC calendar is distributed to students and available to parents. (We will cover absence procedures later.)

19 SAC Calendar Distributed to all students Be aware of peak times / weeks = increased stress

20 ATAR Assessment ATAR assessment made up from: 1. Study scores Given by the subject teacher 2. External Examinations Awarded by external assessors.

21 Study Periods The students are allocated study periods: Monday s Period 4 Thursday s Period 3 and 4 (When other activities haven t been organised) Semester 2: Students who have completed a Unit 2 RE will also have Period 4 Tuesday s and Period 1 Wednesday s. Students are able to complete supervised study at school or study at home.

22 Study (What the students have been advised ) Homework: 3hrs per night, 6 hrs weekends. (Recommended) This time allocations should be maintained in the holidays. When studying: Quiet place minimal distractions (Phone, commercial radio, internet etc.) Study/Life Balance: While study should be a priority life goes on work and sporting commitments should be scaled back not abandoned. Family / Social commitments may need to be reduced but not abandoned. Parents can help their children in these areas.

23 What you can do The students do not walk alone: Guide, support and encourage your child. Don't nag. Don't tell them they will fail if they don't work harder. Encourage healthy eating, regular exercise and plenty of sleep. Take their efforts seriously. Create an effective work space in the house. Take a whole-family approach to supporting the student. Don't overload them with domestic chores. Let them know that you're there when they need you. Encourage them to believe in themselves. Remind them of their goals. Give them positive feedback whenever possible. Remember the VCE is about them, not you. Encourage them to take study breaks when necessary. Help them put the year in perspective. Keep an eye on their emotional health; look for changes in sleeping or eating and see your local doctor if concerned.
