College of Arts and Sciences Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies 09 Satterfield Hall Kent Campus mcls@kent.edu Description The Bachel of Science degree in Translation is a pre-professional program designed f students who are seeking the me professional focus and interdisciplinary breadth that the B.S. degree offers with the inclusion of a min double maj certificate to develop the skills needed to use feign language translation in a professional setting. It introduces the basics of translation they as it applies to the actual practice of translation. The requirement of a min, certificate second maj enables students to acquire a level of expertise in a specific field in which they can specialize as translats. This degree also enables students to have a maj and a min that make them me competitive and prepares them f a sect that the U.S. Department of Lab projects as one of the fastest-growing sects globally. Translation majs are strongly encouraged to undertake study in a country where their language concentration is spoken so that they can achieve the necessary proficiency level. Skills necessary include an excellent command of the source language, an excellent command of the target language, cultural knowledge, specialist knowledge, research competence, terminological competence, technological competence, an understanding of the translation industry and transfer competence. Graduates may enter graduate programs in translation (the professional degree) go on to wk f government, business industry, f translation agencies as freelance translats. The Translation maj comprises the following concentrations: French German Russian Spanish Many study abroad opptunities exist, including: France: Université Michel de Montaigne Bdeaux III, Bdeaux (all class standings, all majs/mins) Germany: Julius-Maximilian-Universität Würzburg, Würzbug (all class standings, all majs/mins) Germany: Universität Leipzig, Leipzig (intermediate German language proficiency required) Spain: Universidad Europea de Madrid, Madrid (all class standings, all majs/mins) Spain: Universidad Europea de Valencia, Valencia FULLY OFFERED AT: Kent Campus Admission Requirements The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opptunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three me years ago. Freshman Students on the Kent Campus: The freshman admission policy on the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon the following: cumulative grade point average, ACT and/ SAT sces, strength of high school college preparaty curriculum and grade trends. The Admissions Office at the Kent Campus may defer the admission of students who do not meet admissions criteria but who demonstrate areas of promise f successful college study. Deferred applicants may begin their college coursewk at one of seven Regional Campuses of Kent State University. Freshman Students on the Regional Campuses: Kent State campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, as well as the Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg, have open enrollment admission f students who hold a high school diploma, GED equivalent. English Language Proficiency Requirements f International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning a minimum 525 TOEFL sce (7 on the Internet-based version), minimum 75 MELAB sce, minimum 6.0 IELTS sce minimum 48 PTE Academic sce, by completing the ELS level 2 Intensive Program. University Requirements All students in a bachel's degree program at Kent State University must complete the following university requirements f graduation. NOTE: University requirements may be fulfilled in this program by specific course requirements. Please see Program Requirements f details. Requirement Destination Kent State: First Year Experience Course is not required f students with 25 transfer credits, excluding College Credit Plus, age 2+ at time of admission. Diversity Domestic/Global (DIVD/DIVG) Students must successfully complete one domestic and one global course, of which one must be from the Kent Ce. Experiental Learning Requirement (ELR) Students must successfully complete one course approved experience. Students in a B.A. and/ B.S. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete 42 upper-division credit hours. Graduation Requirements Minimum Maj GPA Program Notes Minimum Overall GPA Some courses in the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies are offered on a rotating basis, and course availability may change at any time. Visit the department's website f course offering projections and advising with course planning. Students are expected to start in a course appropriate to their language proficiency level. Students lacking in sufficient proficiency to take the first concentration course can reach it by taking courses in the prerequisite sequence based on their placement sce and high school training. One me of the prerequisites may be waived with demonstrated proficiency through the Kent State placement test, AP, CLEP, International Baccalaureate, official ACTFL Proficiency Rating another department-approved assessment. Students who fulfill the college language requirement in fewer than 8 credit hours as a result of proficiency, will complete remaining hours with general electives. Completion of first juni-level course completes the College of Arts and Sciences feign language requirements.
