FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION CHILD S AT RONCALLI FINANCIAL AID GUIDE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR
RONCALLI A SOUTH DEANERY SUPPORTED HIGH SCHOOL Roncalli High School offers a variety of ways to help provide for your child s high school education. First and foremost, we receive over $1,800,000 of support from our local South Deanery Catholic parishes. This is awarded in the form of a lowered tuition for all families who are deemed by their pastors as supporting members of a Catholic parish. Other programs available include: - need-based tuition assistance - Indiana Choice Scholarship Voucher - academic scholarships - Future Foundations Endowment Program It is possible for a student to qualify for all four types of assistance. The need-based tuition assistance and Indiana Choice Scholarship Voucher program are the two most common forms of financial aid at Roncalli.
Indiana Choice Scholarship Voucher Program Information In 2011, the Indiana General Assembly established the Indiana Choice Scholarship Voucher Program, which is intended to provide opportunities for low and middle income families to send their children to the private school of their choice. The program creates a new scholarship voucher that will enable families to access a portion of the per-pupil state funding in their area to be used toward the private school tuition. There are seven different pathways that a student can satisfy to become eligible to participate in the Choice Voucher Program. The seven pathways labeled A through G, are outlined below: A. Continuing Choice Scholarship Student Pathway a. The student received a Choice Voucher Scholarship in the school year that immediately precedes the school year for which the student is applying for a Choice Voucher Scholarship. b. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 200% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. B. Previous Choice Voucher Scholarship Student Pathway a. The student received a Choice Voucher Scholarship in a school year that does not immediately precede the school year for which the student is applying for a Choice Voucher Scholarship. b. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 150% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. C. Previous SGO Award Pathway a. The student received a Tax Credit Scholarship in a preceding school year, including a school year that does not immediately precede the school year for which the student is applying for a Choice Voucher Scholarship. b. The four approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) are: Institute for Quality Education; School Scholarship Granting Organization of Northeast Indiana; Sagamore Institute Scholarships for Education Choice; Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Indiana. c. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 150% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. D. Special Education Pathway a. The student has an identified learning disability. b. An individualized education program (IEP) pursuant to IC or a service plan pursuant to 511 IAC 7-34 has been developed for the student.
c. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 200% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. E. Public School Pathway a. The student would be required to attend a specific public school based on their residence that has been assigned an F grade. Note: This pathway does not require prior attendance at the school. b. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 150% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. F. Two-Semesters in Public School Pathway a. The student was enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12 in a public school, including a charter school, in Indiana for at least two semesters immediately preceding the first semester for which the individual receives a Choice Scholarship. b. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 150% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. G. Sibling Pathway a. The sibling of the newly applying student received either a Choice Voucher Scholarship or a Tax Credit Scholarship in a preceding school year, including a school year that does not immediately precede the school year for which the student is applying for a Choice Voucher Scholarship. b. The student is a member of a household with an annual income equal to or below 150% of the amount to qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. The eligibility levels and voucher amounts have not been established, the following information is from the school year: INDIANA CHOICE SCHOLARSHIP VOUCHER PROGRAM INCOME LIMITS Persons in Household (100% reduced lunch eligibility) Annual household income limit for 90% Voucher scholarship (150% reduced lunch) Annual household income limit for 50% Voucher scholarship (200% reduced lunch) Annual household income limit for 50% Voucher scholarship 1 $21,978 $32,967 $43,956 2 $29,637 $44,456 $59,274 3 $37,296 $55,944 $74,592 4 $44,955 $67,433 $89,910 5 $52,614 $78,921 $105,228 6 $60,273 $90,410 $120,546 7 $67,951 $101,926 $135,901 8 $75,647 $113,470 $151,293

Need-Based Tuition Assistance Frequently Asked Questions WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF THE NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE AT RONCALLI? In the school year, between the Roncalli need-based assistance and the Indiana Voucher program, Roncalli will distribute over 1.8 million dollars in needbased tuition assistance to qualifying families. In the current year, 433 applicants received assistance representing 37% of the student body. ARE THE INCOME AND AWARD LEVELS THE SAME AS THE INDIANA CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM AND IF I QUALIFY FOR A VOUCHER SHOULD I EVEN APPLY FOR RONCALLI ASSISTANCE? The income and award levels are usually similar, but not in all cases. Several families in the school year qualified for additional assistance above and beyond the Indiana Choice Voucher amount. Roncalli will give each family the higher of either the Indiana Choice Voucher program or the Roncalli need-based assistance level. Even if you are eligible for a voucher, you are still encouraged to complete the Roncalli need-based assistance application. HOW DO WE APPLY FOR NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE? In January, application forms are mailed to every family that applied for needbased tuition assistance the previous school year, and to every family that has contacted the Roncalli Business Office for an application. Completed applications are sent by the family to FACTS. This company charges a $32.00 processing fee for evaluation. FACTS evaluates the applications and returns the information to Roncalli. Applications consist of a three-page questionnaire and a copy of your most recent tax return. In order to be eligible for the first distribution of needbased tuition assistance the deadline to submit these forms to FACTS is March 1, Roncalli uses the information from FACTS to distribute assistance according to family need and the amount of funds the school has available. All financial assistance is confidential and funded by Roncalli High School. CONFIDENTIALITY: All information submitted is strictly confidential. The President and the Vice President of Finance make a recommendation of the tuition assistance award, based on the information provided by FACTS. This recommendation is reviewed and finalized by the four-member Financial Aid Committee of the Roncalli High School Board of Directors. No other individuals have access to any information provided. No other individuals have access to the award decisions.
HOW IS THE AMOUNT OF NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE DETERMINED? Financial need is determined by subtracting the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the total cost of education for the year. (The EFC is determined from the FACTS application evaluation.) The EFC is influenced by many factors including the parents and student s income and assets, the household size, and the number of family members enrolled in tuition-based schools. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE? In order to be eligible for financial assistance, you must be a supporting member of a Catholic parish or your student must have attended Catholic schools for three years. The supporting membership status is a decision of the Pastor of each parish. IS THERE AN INCOME CUT-OFF FOR NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE? No. Income is a factor when determining eligibility for need-based tuition assistance, but other factors are also taken into account, such as household size, number of children in tuition-based schools, and the age of the oldest parent. We recommend that all students file for aid so that their eligibility can be evaluated using all of the necessary information. WHEN AND HOW WILL I FIND OUT HOW MUCH AID I CAN RECEIVE? Students who have been accepted for admission and who have completed the FACTS application will begin to receive award letters at the beginning of May. At that time we notify students of their eligibility for financial assistance. Students also will receive information explaining, among other things, the aid programs and requirements for their renewal. We will continue to mail award letters on an ongoing basis, as students are accepted and their need-based tuition assistance files become complete. Families not meeting the priority deadline of March 1, 2017 will generally not receive the full allotment of need-based tuition assistance for which they would have qualified. DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE EACH YEAR? Yes. Students must update their financial records by filing the upcoming year s Private School Aid Service application every year after January 1 to re-establish eligibility for need-based tuition assistance at Roncalli.
IS AID GUARANTEED IN THE FUTURE YEARS? In general the amount of assistance will stay stable as long as a family s financial situation stays stable. If a family s income level changes markedly then need-based tuition assistance eligibility can be affected from year to year. The amount of needbased tuition assistance can go up or down each year based upon these changes in circumstances. CAN I LOSE MY NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE IF I DON T MAINTAIN A CERTAIN GRADE POINT AVERAGE? Need-based tuition assistance is not contingent upon maintaining a target grade point average, other than to meet Roncalli High School s standard for minimum academic progress. Students receiving selected academic-based scholarships may have to meet additional academic standards to retain these awards. Need-Based Tuition Assistance Checklist OO Complete the Private School Aid Service form. The information from FACTS is used for all need-based assistance at Roncalli. OO Make sure information is correct and accurate. Carefully review information for completeness and correctness. Having the wrong date of birth or Social Security number, incomplete tax data or a missing signature can slow down the process of determining eligibility for need-based tuition assistance. O O Apply before the March 1, 2017 priority deadline for incoming and returning students. Allow extra time for corrections and verification procedures. Some sources of need-based aid may be depleted if you wait until late in the year. Therefore, it is wise to file the application with FACTS as early as possible after January 1, 2017 for the next academic year. The application forms are available by request from the Business Office or by downloading it from the Roncalli website under the Admissions tab.
Future Foundations Endowment Program WHAT IS THE PROGRAM AND WHO DOES IT SERVE? The program involves the Future Foundations Endowment to be funded by several sources. An endowment is a permanent fund which earns interest over time, with the distribution or proceeds from the fund to support an institution. The distribution or proceeds from this endowment will serve Roncalli students in need of financial assistance. It is the long term goal of the endowment, that all need-based financial assistance will be funded solely through the proceeds of the endowment. This program is one of the sources that will fund the endowment. HOW DOES THIS PROGRAM WORK IN REGARDS TO MY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND WHAT IS A WORK DAY? In previous years, the requirement for Roncalli financial assistance was membership in a Catholic parish and participation in the Roncalli Walkathon. A work component has been added for the last 25% of qualified assistance, at the rate of up to $500 a day, until the last 25% of each family s qualified assistance is consumed. The first 75% of qualified assistance is credited to your family s tuition account without any work requirement. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A WORK DAY? Last year, 150 families worked seven separate concession stands at Lucas Oil Stadium during events ranging from Colts football games to the Monster Jam event. We will look to continue to work events like these, but not necessarily at Lucas Oil Stadium. Currently activities include serving food and drink, and are similar to those activities you find working at your parish festival or fish fry. We will try to combine families that are new to the program with families that have worked prior in the program for each event. The start time for each event varies, but the length of a work day is typically 6 8 hours, but sometimes longer. A bus provides transportation, to and from, the back parking lot of Roncalli for each event. WHO CAN WORK? The program is for adults to work for two reasons. First, many students are incapable, or unwilling, to work at the level required for the program. Second, there is alcohol served in each of the concession stands in which we work. For your family, either spouse (or both spouses) can work; or someone can work who is 21 years or older, in which you designate to cover your family s work requirement (this provision would help those who are physically handicapped). If you are physically handicapped and are unable to find someone to work, please contact the Business Office at Roncalli for alternate work opportunities.

CAN I OPT OUT OF A WORK DAY(S)? Yes, but your family would not receive the corresponding financial assistance amount for that day(s). Should you know up front that you would not like to work some, or any, of the days for the remaining 25% of awarded financial assistance, we would ask that you notify us when returning the tuition payment schedule form. Financial assistance money foregone will return to the financial assistance endowment program for other students in need of financial assistance. HOW DOES THE ENDOWMENT GET FUNDED? The company that runs the overall concessions at Lucas Oil Stadium contributes a commission percentage of the sales for each stand to the school. This commission averaged about $90 per person per event. These dollars are used to fund the endowment, along with money raised through the Annual Fund. ONCE I HAVE COMPLETED MY WORK DAYS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, CAN I WORK FURTHER TO ADD TO THE ENDOWMENT, OR WORK FOR TUITION? YES! Once you have completed the work days for financial assistance, you can continue to work and receive further financial assistance to be credited toward your family s tuition account at a level nearer the commission rate level (last year this averaged about $90 per person per event). After you have fulfilled your work days, the subsequent days worked will be at the proportion of 80% for additional financial assistance for your tuition account, and 20% to the endowment. We will continue to look to add possible work events in addition to the Lucas Oil Stadium, such as Victory Field. WILL I BE WORKING WITH ONLY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FAMILIES? No, last year we had a wide variety of current families, staff members, Roncalli Board members, etc. participating in the program. Some were receiving financial assistance and some were simply raising money for the program. Assistance confidentiality remains in the program, as the only way someone will know you are receiving financial assistance is if you choose to tell them. WHY ARE WE OFFERING THE FUTURE FOUNDATIONS ENDOWMENT PROGRAM? There are several reasons for the program. The critical reason behind the program is a recognition that the cost of educating students at the secondary level is escalating at a rate that the current school revenue sources cannot maintain without increasing tuition at a level that will eventually price the school out of reach for too many families. This endowment could give the school an alternative revenue source so the tuition in the future will remain at an affordable level. The program also provides financial assistance families an opportunity to give back to the school, and specifically the financial assistance program assisting students who need financial assistance in the future. It also gives anyone who is interested in building the endowment program for the future of the school an avenue to donate.
Tuition Overview At Roncalli Roncalli s tuition level is recommended by the Roncalli Board and approved by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
