1 JULIE GERLINGER September 2016 Cell Phone: (562) University of California - Irvine j.gerlinger@uci.edu 2340 Social Ecology II Irvine, CA ACADEMIC TRAINING Ph.D. Candidate Dissertation: Structural Inequality in School Discipline: Regulating Intolerance in American Public Schools This research draws on several original datasets to examine the adoption and consequences of zero tolerance policies in order to understand the larger nexus between education, crime, public policy, and inequality. The shift to criminalize students by adopting zero tolerance policies and increasing school security parallels the tough-on-crime movement in several important ways, including the disproportionate use of punitive policies on minorities and disadvantaged youth and the numerous collateral consequences associated with these policies. I advance the scholarship on school discipline by focusing on systemic inequality rooted in policy, rather than the individual differences between students. This project empirically assesses how school discipline policies contribute to social and racial inequality in two quantitative sections: (1) a state-level analysis of zero tolerance policy adoption and amendments, and (2) a tiered school-level study of the relationship between exclusions (suspensions and expulsions), neighborhood crime, and school safety. Findings from my dissertation are utilized to advance theories about the relationship between school discipline and safety, criminalization and stigmatization, and social and economic inequality.
