7 What is patient-oriented research? Research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects This area of research includes: mechanisms of human disease; therapeutic interventions; clinical trials, and; the development of new technologies.

8 What is not patient-oriented research? Laboratory work on samples from human subjects Health Services Research Outcomes Research Decision Analysis Epidemiological Research Case-control Study Cohort Study Unless you are directly collecting the data from patients

11 Conceptualize as history of your interest in this field When I entered the University of Maryland School of Medicine in August 2000, my goal was to become a family practice physician. But during my second year of medical school, I had a rotation at the VA, where I had my first experience with geriatric patients. To my own surprise, I found that I particularly enjoyed working with this group of patients, many of whom had complex medical problems but also, as a group, had a feisty attitude that helped them cope. In the beginning, I was an engineer.

Figure out your study section.
