2 Cardiff Met CSAD CRS and Masters Joining Pack MA Art and Design MA Ceramics MDes MFA MSc Product Design For all Masters students, an introduction to an introduction to our Masters Programmes Welcome from the Head of Postgraduate Studies We would like to wish you a very warm welcome. As an adult learner, and possibly, a practicing professional, you will be bringing valuable experience to the course. Our aim is for you to build upon this experience and hopefully be intellectually challenged as well as enjoying your study. We are very aware that for many of you this will be a natural progression flowing on from a previous qualification. However for some of you this may be a return to study after a period of time out of higher education. Whatever your route into the course, please be assured that the staff will endeavour to provide you with appropriate level of support and encouragement. As a postgraduate student however, it is important to recognise the commitment you are making; you may already have work commitments, home/family commitments and social commitments. Taking on this course inevitably adds an additional commitment which will require you to dedicate a significant amount of additional time to independent study and learning. The course is quite intensive in nature an you will have the challenge of managing these varying commitments. We look forward to meeting you at the course induction session and the programme team looks forward to working with you. Programme Information Included below is some additional information on our Masters programmes. In addition, we have appended some details on personal computer equipment. We very much look forward to meeting you in September and hope that you will enjoy your time with us. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. John Counsell Head of Postgraduate Studies 2

12 Cardiff Met CSAD CRS and Masters Joining Pack A module option for MA Art and Design students If you are joining the MA Art and Design programme, you have a choice of modules in the first term: either ART7001 Question or ART7002 Research Skills. Both are 60 credits in value and steer you towards the formation of a question that will go on to guide your MA study. The main difference is that ART7001 Question does it primarily through subject-specific sources, whereas ART7002 Research Skills does it through training in a series of research skills and methods. You will need to select your module at enrolment. If you are uncertain of which one to pick, contact either your subject pathway leader or Prof Clive Cazeaux, module leader for ART7002 Research Skills, tel ccazeaux@cardiffmet.ac.uk. Research Skills (CRS) offers a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the range of methods, strategies and debates which can apply to art and design research. It is built around the four elements of (1) methods, (2) critical thinking, (3) ethics, and (4) project design. It is designed to bring you to the point where you have written a formal research degree proposal that can serve as the focus for the remainder of you MA studies. The CRS delivery schedule is different from the regular Wednesday and Friday Masters teaching pattern. It is as follows: 1. It is taught over two intensive weekends (Friday-Saturday), one mid-october (21-22 nd October 2016), the other late-november (25-26 th November 2016), a total of approximately 30 hours. 2. Between these weekends and up to Christmas, there are one-to-one tutorials upon request (face-to-face, phone or Skype), as well as review of draft coursework submission by There is a feedback tutorial in January. These tutorials and assessment periods make up another 5-10 hours approximately. 4. The remainder is independent study. 12

18 Cardiff Met CSAD CRS and Masters Joining Pack Preparation for your postgraduate induction As well as being an introduction to the School s and the university s facilities and systems, the postgraduate induction is also the period when you should be starting your research studies in earnest. One of the key induction sessions in this regard is the Library Induction. Here you will be introduced to the university s electronic library which contains a wide range of research resources, including a direct-to-your-desktop article search facility. In terms of the identification and delivery of relevant, peer-reviewed publications, these resources far exceed generic search engines. To get the most out of the library Induction, you are advised to come to the session with search criteria in the form of key questions, concepts or names on which you wish to find reading or visual material. At the end of the session, you should have some leads relevant to your project on which you can start work, and which will help you prepare for your CRS seminars. It will be especially helpful for the presentation early in the programme where students introduce themselves and their topic to the group, and begin the process of focusing on a research question. Tuition Fees Methods of payment for tuition fees are detailed during enrolment, but you can find details at: Time-Students-.aspx Facilities, coursework, personal tools and equipment Facilities and dedicated studio space. Cardiff School of Art and Design offers an extensive range of spaces, workshops and equipment, creating a vibrant and creative learning environment, within a new purpose designed building and a fully renovated extension. Workshop and technical facilities include a foundry; and access to other workshops across the full range of Art and Design disciplines. Membership of the Fablab is included in the indicative coursework costs below. Cardiff School of Art and Design has a wide range of tools and equipment for use by students; necessary workshop training in their use includes access to materials used as part of timetabled workshop inductions. You also have access to and use of recycled materials within workshop areas. Typical materials and coursework costs to budget You will need to purchase materials for individual projects used in studio and workshops as appropriate. Please note that costs will vary depending upon the scale and individual requirements of your work. There are specific suggestions for each programme on the Cardiff Metropolitan University website - select 18
19 Cardiff Met CSAD CRS and Masters Joining Pack Postgraduate Courses then select your programme then select Key Facts and scroll down to where it describes Postgraduate costs of study in CSAD. You will find details of the suggested sums to budget at Costs.aspx Additional costs will be incurred for the one-off purchase of personal tools (in addition to those in your possession at the commencement of your programme of study) and equipment (particularly any personal equipment appropriate to your own field of practice or enquiry) and study trips if you participate in these. Other costs such as printing, the purchase of textbooks; and cost of optional placements will also need to be accounted for. Please ask your Programme Director for specific guidance when you accept our offer of a place. Personal computer specification The use of a personal computer outside of University hours would be of significant benefit to your studies but is not essential as there are extensive computer facilities at Cardiff Met. The computers in the Campus Learning Centre are available from 9am to 9pm during the week and a special 24hour room is also available. If you do decide to purchase a computer, you may find the following minimum specification useful: The flexibility of a laptop allows it to be used on the university campus, in your lectures, at your student accommodation and at home during times of vacation. The art & design studios have and most other areas within the university have good WiFi access. A minimum specification for your MS Windows based laptop would be: Microsoft Windows 10 Dual processor; Core i5 or greater 500 GB HD 8 GB RAM 1 GB Graphics card Wireless LAN (WI-FI g) 500 GB portable hard drive (for data backups) USB Memory stick(s) If you do decide to purchase a MacBook Pro with Retina display, you may find the following minimum specification useful: 2.7GHz Processor 128 GB Storage 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz 8GB 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory 128GB PCle-based flash storage Intel Iris Graphics
20 Built-in battery (10 hours) Force Touch trackpad Cardiff Met CSAD CRS and Masters Joining Pack The above is an example with a 13 display, and seems to be what a lot of our student are buying, often larger screens can be more beneficial when designing and using CAD. An external hard drive is essential too. There are good printing facilities available on campus; you may find it useful to have an A3 format Colour Printer for check printing. Cardiff Met s I.T. department can normally offer a student discount on some software purchases (telephone ).
