3 THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Dedicated to medical research and education Canterbury Christ Church University has, for over 20 years, maintained a strong focus on education and research for the healthcare sector both in the UK and internationally. With strong links to private and public healthcare providers, we have a growing reputation for offering medical expertise through our Institute of Medical Sciences at the Medway campus. 6 CLINICAL SIMULATION SUITES AND RESEARCH LABORATORY The University has a range of clinical simulation suites to support learning and development and, from 2015, a stem cell research and advanced bioengineering laboratory at the Medway campus, led by the world renowned Professor Anan Shetty. The simulation suites provide authentic clinical settings for advanced skills to be developed within a safe and controlled environment. Specialist equipment is available for enhancing skills in laparoscopic procedures and a range of computer systems and life size simulator patients are used to practise how to respond to clinical emergencies. In addition, in collaboration with private sector commercial companies we are able to offer cadaveric laparoscopic experience on the campus. 4

7 STEM CELL RESEARCH AND ADVANCED BIOENGINEERING LAB (SCRABEL) Established in 2015, our cutting edge stem cell lab is designed to be a leading centre for research and studies in biomedical engineering. The lab has been purpose-built and equipped with the technology needed to support the latest innovations in stem cell culturing, bioengineering, computing and 3D printing. Examples of specialist research carried out by our postgraduate medical students, surgeons and University staff include: Modulating cell population ratios in co-culture through sequential passages Image processing for charactering live 2D culture processes Physiological phase change for tissue engineering applications Robotic manipulation of cultured 2D and 3D constructs Clinical decision support systems for Physicians Assistants We wish to blend together these technologies to produce innovations that are difficult to achieve in isolation. The lab, although in its infancy, is built with a foundation-up philosophy designed to create a broad based knowledge base that will support rapid project development and deployment. 8 MASTERCLASSES We recognise the importance of continually updating skills and knowledge which is why we work closely with leading surgeons and consultants and global commercial sector companies to offer a range of focused medical masterclasses. Our masterclasses are designed to provide clinicians or surgeons with essential theoretical knowledge and practical experience. They are specifically tailored to meet the developmental needs of clinicians from CT1-2 up to Consultant ST 7 8. Themes of previous masterclasses include: Knee and shoulder arthroscopy Wrist fracture fixation Suturing and laparoscopic surgery Laparoscopic hysterectomy Temporal bone dissection RESEARCH AND PHD STUDIES A wide range of opportunities are on offer for students and staff interested in undertaking research in areas related to stem cell technology and cardiology. Some of the research carried out in 2015/16 includes: Deficiency anaemia as a physical marker for postnatel depression Insights into ventricular function in patients with parenchymal lung disease Accuracy of functional versus anatomical investigations of coronary artery disease in a district hospital For an informal discussion about carrying out research with us e: medicalsciences@canterbury.ac.uk 6

9 MEDICAL INNOVATION HUB Our Medical Innovation Hub aims to provide a forum for research active clinicians to discuss and debate ideas and work in collaboration with our academic staff to develop novel medical products and interventions. GP EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RESEARCH As part of the focus to promote and support community medicine our academics work closely with the Health Education England Kent Surrey and Sussex GP Deanery to enhance and develop GP education and training and instigate and support GP led research and innovation in General Practice. Examples of projects that our academics have collaborated on include: Providing support for European GP clinicians wishing to work within the UK health care setting Development of new Community Education Provider Networks (CEPN) across the Kent region 7

10 SCHOLARSHIPS AND SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES We are able to offer academic scholarships of up to for 8000 for eligible international students and up to 4000 for EU/UK students. GMC REGISTRATION NUMBER Canterbury Christ Church University is one of the few UK universities able to offer suitably qualified clinicians the opportunity to apply for a GMC number whilst a student of the University. There are dedicated purpose-built labs for developing clinical skills and knowledge, a modern learning environment and extensive library just a few minutes walk from the University buildings. The campus is shared with two other universities which creates and lively and vibrant atmosphere. Medway is the largest urban area in the South East, outside of London, and one of the fastest growing regeneration regions in the South East of England. The area has excellent transport networks and it is located just 42 minutes from London by high speed train.
