10 How to become a Registered Dietitian Preparation Didactic Program in Dietetics Bachelor s degree or Master s degree - get good grades Gain volunteer, work, and research experience Network - RDs, professors and lecturers, students Complete an ACEND accredited DPD Research dietetic internships Verification statement expires in ~5 years Dietetic Internship Complete an ACEND accredited Dietetic Internship CDR Exam DI verification statement required to take RD exam Upon passing the exam, can use RD or RDN credential

12 Didactic Program in Dietetics Admission Criteria Upper division Foods & Nutrition major status Overall and DPD GPA 3.1 No DPD course grade <C Graduate students: CHEM 100, CHEM 130, CHEM 160, BIO 100&L, BIO 211&L, BIO 212, BIO 336, and statistics must be completed Must be in the DPD for at least 2 semester for a Verification Statement Two application deadlines January 1 (if graduating in December) July 1 (if graduating in May or August)

13 Graduate Programs In 2024, a Master s degree will be required to apply to dietetic internships Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Health Some programs are enforcing this degree requirement early (VA-SD) MS or DI first? Considerations: match competitiveness, job market, how quickly able to work as an RD, research experience, finances, DPD expiration SDSU - if you are within 12 units of completing your BS, you can take graduate courses as an undergraduate - finish the MS faster if accepted (up to 9 of those units could transfer into MS degree at SDSU; check policies of other schools) SDSU - MS in Nutritional Sciences and Dual MS in Nutritional Sciences and Exercise Physiology Complete DPD during graduate program if changing career, not available during undergrad, or if GPA was too low during undergrad

14 How to Get Matched Experience - show your readiness and preparedness for an internship ***Clinical - hospital or LTC facility **Leadership *Related to your goals Work, volunteer, research Build a network RD community is small, San Diego RD community is even smaller RDs talk Letters of recommendation Grades GPA minimums of programs

15 Distance Internship Considerations Distance - not the same site as where the director/coursework is located Common distance programs for SDSU students: Iowa State, Utah State, Sodexo, Wellness Workdays You are responsible for finding your own preceptors Professionals to supervise your practice Why opt for a distance program? Much better match rate - typically accept ~60 students vs Better chance of being where you want to be or staying where you have to be

16 DICAS Opens December 6th Apply to ~ spots $45 fee + $20 for each additional application General application, personal statement, résumé, college transcripts, references, supplemental materials, verification by your program director Plan for ~100 hours of working on DICAS Absolutely no errors Organizational consistency Must enter every DPD course attempt Once you submit for one program, the shared information freezes

17 Personal Statement Why do you want to enter the dietetics profession? Discuss experiences that have helped to prepare you for your career. What are your short-term and long-term goals? What are your strengths and weaknesses or areas needing improvement? What other information do you consider important for the selection decision? 8,000 character maximum 1,000 word maximum

21 Top 10 Application Mistakes to Avoid According to All Access Internships 1. Applying to the wrong programs 2. Personal statement lacks a central theme 3. The résumé has too much or not enough 4. Personal statement repeats your résumé 5. Forgot to sell yourself and your strengths 6. Weaknesses paragraph is too long 7. Your goals are boring 8. You don t explain why the DI is a good fit 9. You don t follow DICAS instructions 10. You don t practice interview question answers out loud
