1 Johnson County Community College Transfer Program to the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design & Planning Department of Design Industrial Design - B.F.A Catalog Contact: Samantha Raines Phone: sraines@ku.edu Home Page: The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the A.A. degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The 33 hours of electives within the A.A. allows students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 63 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses. All Design applicants must meet or exceed academic requirements as well as submit and pass the department s essay and portfolio review. See the department s web site for the academic requirements. Portfolio and essay requirements: The department of Design also requires a image portfolio with a color inventory sheet, and 3 brief essay questions. Deadline for the portfolio and essays is February 1st. Specifics are listed at credit hours are required to complete this program. As part of the 124 hours, students are required to complete 45 hours at the junior/senior level for graduation. Deadlines: February 1st is the final deadline for both application and portfolio submission to be considered for admission to the department. The Industrial Design degree is a 4 year program from the start of the Foundation studios. Students that transfer with the Foundation studios completed should expect 3 more years to complete their degree at KU. Students that do not have the Foundations year completed at the time of transfer should expect 4 years to complete their degree at KU. All studios are on a Fall/Spring sequence and cannot be taken out of sequence. The Department of Design will NOT accept general education transfer grades of D for transfer credit The Department of Design will NOT accept studio grades of C+ (2.3) or lower for transfer credit The Industrial Design degree has a review process in the spring term of studios and during the sophomore studios. Students should familiarize themselves with these requirements and processes prior to transferring to the Department of Design. All students that plan to transfer to the Department of Design should contact Samantha Raines, Coordinator of Undergraduate Student Services, a year prior to their desired transfer term. This will help confirm their progress and prepare them for a timely graduation. NOTE: Classes may count for a major requirement and a core requirement but may NOT count for 2 different core requirements. It is the STUDENT S RESPONSIBILITY to check for updates to all transfer information. This transfer program is provided as a service and is updated annually. Degree requirements at the four-year colleges are subject to change by those institutions. Updated 4/17 1
