1 Internship Program Overview Animal Science Internship Program (ANSC 498) The Internship Experience The internship program in the Department of Animal & Range Sciences is designed to provide field experience to Animal Science undergraduate students from all backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a career related to animal or range science. The job experience for internship credit cannot be a continuation of prior work experience but rather an opportunity to develop skills and practical knowledge which might not otherwise be gained in preparing for a career in animal science or agriculture based fields. Internships are designed to allow students to explore career opportunities by gaining practical experience in their chosen career field. The completion of an internship during a student s college experience allows them to evaluate a possible need for alterations in their planned course of study to better prepare for a professional career in animal science. Additionally, the internship program allows MSU students to work with cooperators and establish potential connections. Not only do student have the ability to gain practical experience, they build their resume, gain potential references, and internship experience helps them better establish a direction for their future career. Student Eligibility Requirements Students must be junior standing or above in their degree coursework and be an Animal Science student. All internship applications must be typed, signed, and submitted to the Student Records Manager, Denise Thompson, by: November 1 st for spring, April 1 st for summer July 1 st for Fall Internships Student Intern Responsibilities All students must obtain an internship application online or from the Student Records Manager. They must save the document, type in the information, and print it off for signatures. Student will get Cooperator s and Academic Advisor s signature before returning a completed application to the Student Records office who will then forward the application to the Internship Coordinator. Students participating in the Animal and Range Sciences Internship Program will be required to complete all facets of the program including pre-planning, registration, fee payment, comply with cooperator s work schedules and regulations, submit weekly or biweekly reports, final reports and evaluations, and maintain contact with departmental internship coordinator and cooperator supervisors during the course of the internship. Not following these guidelines and due dates will result in an F grade. Cooperator Responsibilities The role of the cooperator is to provide meaningful learning experiences for the student. Thus, the cooperator will have the student participate in a variety of educational experiences during the assignment that are designed to meet the goals of the learning objectives.

2 University Credit Hours Students must register in ANSC 498 for a maximum of 3 (4 if in association with ag ed.) credits per internship experience. As a general guideline, most internships exceed 50 hours of work per credit hour, which is therefore considered the minimum work requirement for 1 credit. A minimum of 150 working hours are required to meet the 3 credit requirement. Credit will not be given for menial or routine work experience. Any additional internship will only count toward the University s 120 credits requirement and 42 upper division credits. Additional internships will not be used toward any departmental requirements. Grading will be on a P/F system. To earn a passing grade in ANSC 498, the student will: Complete the goals and learning objectives worksheet and submit with the internship application materials before the designated deadline Students are expected to keep a detailed written log of activities, experience and knowledge gained and how they relate to learning objectives, and any other pertinent information. Weekly reports (for internships 5 weeks or less) Bi-weekly reports (internships over 5 weeks) are required and should be submitted to the internship coordinator Prepare a 10 page (max) double spaced paper describing their internship learning experience. This paper will be kept on file and will serve as a resource for potential interns as they seek internship opportunities in the future Prepare a poster illustrating your internship experience. Students must be available to talk about their internship to students and stakeholders during a designated departmental poster session. Submit both student and cooperator evaluation forms before the designated deadline. Evaluation of the Internship Both student and cooperator will evaluate the internship program upon completion of the internship. These evaluations will be used to improve the Internship Program. Therefore, I understand that if I, as a student intern, successfully complete the intern program as set forth in the Memorandum of Agreement, appropriate credit will be granted by the University. I understand that since the daily managerial control and working conditions of the internship program are handled by, and are under the sole direction of the Cooperator, the University does not have, nor can it assume, any liability relative to my safety and health for the entire duration of the internship program; and that, therefore, I assume all risks relative thereto. I acknowledge that I have been advised to review with the Cooperator what employee benefits are available to me (i.e., health and accident insurance, workman s compensation and liability insurance). As stated above, the University will not be liable in any way and, therefore, if adequate benefits are not available, I must make my own arrangements for accident and health protection.
