2 ADMISSION Holistic Admission Review There is no secret formula for admission to BYU. All applications go through a holistic review process. You should take the application for admission seriously and the work submitted should be your own. Your application should illustrate your efforts, accomplishments, and goals. The application includes the following sections: Profile Educational History Recommendations Activities Essays A BYU education is designed to be spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, and character building, which all lead to lifelong learning and service. We invite you to consider the four Aims of a BYU Education as you contemplate applying to this great university: SPIRITUALLY STRENGTHENING "The founding charge of BYU is to teach every subject with the Spirit."* BYU provides a world-class education within a spiritual environment. You should be able to contribute to and appreciate this learning atmosphere. We recommend attending and graduating from LDS seminary as well as regularly participating in church meetings and activities. INTELLECTUALLY ENLARGING "Members of the BYU community rigorously study academic subjects in the light of divine truth."* You should take challenging courses during high school to ready yourself for a rigorous and rewarding BYU experience. We recommend that you explore the majors offered at the university (pages 12 and 13) to ensure we offer a program that interests you. CHARACTER BUILDING "BYU has always cared as much about strong moral character as about great mental capability."* You should have a strong work ethic and be able to demonstrate resilience. You should be respectful of others, work well with diverse groups, honor commitments, and have integrity in all that you do. We recommend pursuing a life consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ. LIFELONG LEARNING AND SERVICE Students enter to learn at BYU and then go forth to serve. * We expect our graduates to use what they learn to make the world a better place. 3 Things to Consider PREPARATION TIPS Live the standards of the LDS Church. Attend and graduate from LDS seminary. Attend LDS Institute of Religion classes after high school if not attending a CES school. Participate in meaningful service opportunities. Enroll in quality coursework in high school and college. Recommended high school courses: º 4 years of mathematics º 4 years of English º 2-3 years of laboratory science º 2 years of history or government º 2 or more years of foreign language Consider AP/IB courses if available. These courses help prepare you for the ACT/SAT and for university-level work. Take the ACT/SAT twice and send scores to BYU before submitting your application; we will use the highest composite score. Get involved in extracurricular activities; develop your specific talents. Be genuine in your application. Plan to provide specific examples of how you have contributed in meaningful ways as you write your application essays. MISSIONARY SERVICE DEFERMENT You will be able to defer your enrollment (and scholarship, if applicable) for an LDS mission by completing a mission deferment form online. The form cannot be submitted until you have been admitted and have received your mission call. For further information regarding the mission deferment, please visit admissions.byu.edu/deferment. APPLICATION NOTES On-campus housing is offered to admitted students in the order they submit their admission application. A place in BYU on-campus housing cannot be guaranteed, but the earlier you submit your admission application the more likely you are to receive your housing preference. Only apply for the semester or term you wish to start. Requests to change beginning semesters or terms may not be accommodated. Admission to one semester/term is not easier than another. If required, high school transcript data will be selfreported on the application and an official transcript will be required upon admission. Failure to provide accurate information on any portion of the application may result in the reversal of an offer of admission. You must provide transcripts from all previous colleges and universities attended, including any concurrent college credit received during high school. If you have not yet graduated from high school you will apply as a freshman, regardless of the amount of college credit you earned during high school. If you attended another college and have earned any graded credit after high school graduation (including vocational or technical credit from an accredited school) you will apply as a transfer applicant. All secondary education and college work (not USaccredited) done outside the United States must be evaluated by one of these agencies at your expense: º International Education Research Foundation (IERF) ierf.org/byu-ces º World Education Services (WES) wes.org If you have completed a bachelor s degree you are not eligible for a second bachelor s degree from BYU; however, you are welcome to apply to BYU graduate programs at gradstudies.byu.edu.

5 FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Cost of Attendance The cost of attendance is calculated for a single student living on campus during fall and winter semesters. With the exception of tuition, all costs are estimated figures and may not reflect your actual expenses. Once admitted to the university, and after submitting the FAFSA, complete any tasks in My Financial Center accessible under the School folder in mybyu. Scholarships ACADEMIC AWARDS Approximately 25% of incoming freshmen receive an academic scholarship from the university. TRANSFER STUDENTS Transfer students may apply for continuing student academic scholarships after having completed at least one full enrollment (12 credit hours) at BYU by the appropriate March 1 application deadline. ROTC MILITARY AWARDS The university has Air Force and Army ROTC programs. These ROTC units offer competitive scholarships to freshmen enrolling in their programs. If interested, contact the ROTC department by December 1 of your senior year. See the directory on page 15 for contact information. NEED-BASED & MISCELLANEOUS AWARDS The university offers a limited number of scholarships based on financial need and other factors. To be considered for these awards, complete the scholarship application which can be found online at financialaid.byu.edu.
