Master of Arts Plan I: Thesis and Plan II: Comprehensive Examination The Master s degree is not designed as a terminal professional degree, but as an interim step toward the Ph.D. degree. The unit requirement for a Master s degree Plan I: Thesis is 36 units. At least 24 of the 36 units must be in graduate seminars in Political Science. Students must take a minimum of three seminars each from three fields. The thesis itself is a major scholarly undertaking reflecting extensive research and original analysis. It is prepared under the supervision of a faculty committee with which the candidate is expected to work closely. The supervising committee must judge the thesis to be of passing quality before the candidate can attain the M.A. degree. The unit requirement for a Master s degree Plan II: Comprehensive Examination is 40 units. At least 28 of the 40 units must be in graduate seminars in Political Science. Students must take a minimum of three seminars from three fields, and one elective course. Candidates under Plan II must also either pass one written qualifying examination, or write a passing qualifying field paper. Field paper students must take four courses in their exam field, the topic of which may determine their choice of elective courses. Field papers are comprehensive, critical reviews of the literature in a sub-field. Both exams and field papers are graded on the following scale: Distinction, High Pass, Pass, Not Passing or Fail. The candidate must receive a grade of Pass or above in order to attain the M.A. degree. All students must pass their coursework with a B or better. Time-to-degree: 4 years to advance to candidacy, 7 years to complete the degree. Master s Degree Awarded (mm/dd/yy) Doctor of Philosophy The Ph.D. program centers on coursework (a minimum of 48 units of coursework is required) and preparation in two written examination fields, or one exam field and one field paper; and for all students except those specializing in political theory, a series of courses on research methods (POL S 204, 205 and 206). Typically, field choices are made from among the following: political theory, American politics, comparative politics, environmental politics, and international relations. Field choices for the comprehensive exam must be from the prior traditional fields of political science. It is also possible to tailor special fields to the interests of individual students when writing a field paper. Proficiency in a foreign language is required unless students complete advanced methodology courses. Three years of POL S 595 is required, as well as POL S 503, Dissertation Prospectus Workshop. Coursework Requirements for Taking the Ph.D. Comprehensive Examination The purpose of the exam is to demonstrate knowledge of primary emphasis and/or secondary emphasis. Complete three graduate seminars in the exam field. Student should not have any no grade, incompletes, or lapse incompletes. Consult core reading lists when available. Consult previous Ph.D. Comprehensive Exam questions. During this exam study period, students may enroll in PS 597, MA/Ph.D. Examination Preparation.

5 Oral Qualifying Exam (Advancement to Candidacy) Having fulfilled the requirements for the written comprehensive exams (or a combination of exam and field paper), a student is considered ready to defend the dissertation prospectus by satisfying the following requirements: Complete the core methodology requirement (POL S 204, 205, 206 or three elective courses for students in political theory) Complete POL S 503 Dissertation Prospectus Workshop. Satisfy the language/skills requirement. Satisfy the professional skills requirement (i.e., three years of POL S 595 and attending professional skills forums on six different topics). Submit a complete draft of the dissertation prospectus approved by the committee chair. During this exam study period, students may enroll in POL S 597, M.A./Ph.D. Examination Preparation. Once the student has passed his or her oral qualifying exam, he or she advances to candidacy. Qualifying Exam Committee Chair: Dissertation Completion The dissertation must be completed within seven years of starting the program. It is essential that doctoral students maintain regular contact with members of their dissertation committee. The committee advisees students on both conducting research and preparing the Ph.D. dissertation. While working on the dissertation, students may enroll in POL S 599, Ph.D. Dissertation Preparation.
