Students are free to see me, phone me, or me at almost any time. Course Description This course is designed for majors in the biological sciences and those students in the health careers area. It is also suitable for those students who need to transfer biology/science credits to a senior college or university. Prerequisites None Course Goal Student Learning Outcomes The student will be able to: 1. Understand the scientific method for gaining knowledge. 2. Appreciate the role of chemistry in modern biology. 3. Gain a knowledge of basic cell structure and function, energy and biology, DNA structure and function., basic laws of genetics Learning objectives Students will:

MANUAL: General Biology I-Lab Manual- A Hands on Experience by Wagle and Turell COURSE DESCRIPTION: General Biology I is designated for majors in the biological sciences and those students in the health careers area. It is also suitable for those students who need to transfer biology credits to a senior college or university. This course will transfer as four (4) semester hours of beginning college biology. The last day to register/add/drop/swamp: this semester is Jan 19 (RT), Feb. 15 (SS) An instructor will no longer give any student a grade of W after the official drop date (April 21 at 4:30 pm). The Texas Legislature passed a law limiting first time

3 3 entering freshmen to no more than Six (6) total course withdraws throughout their education career either for a certificate and/or a degree. How to Drop: If a student decides to drop or withdraw from a class upon careful review of other options, the student can drop online prior to the above indicated deadline through their HCC Student Center. HCC and/or instructors may drop students for excessive absences without notification. Class attendance: As stated in the HCC Catalog, all students are expected to attend classes regularly. Because our class only meets one day a week, 4 absences would be missing an entire month of class which seems excessive and not helpful for success in this class. One will be a lecture test and the other will be a lab examination.

5 5 The three laboratory examinations will come from the laboratory exercises and the lecture tests will come from the text book chapters. st 1 Lecture Examination will cover chapters 2,3,4, 5, (chemistry and biology) nd 2 Lecture Examination will cover chapters 6 and 7 (structure and function of cells and membranes) rd 3 Lecture Examination will cover chapters 8, 9, and 10 (energy and biology) rd 4 Lecture Examination will cover chapters 13, and 14 (genetics) The final examine will cover the chapters after 14 st 1 lab test will be over labs 6,2,3,4,5, and 7 (microscope, chemistry, and cell structure) nd 2 lab test will be over labs 12 and 13 (cell division) rd 3 lab test will be over the material in my Practice Genetics Problems Extra credit quizzes over lab material will be given after most lab exercises. GRADING SYSTEM: 90 + = A = B = C = D below 50 = F COMPUTATION OF FINAL GRADE: 1st. Hour Examination over 2, 3, 4, and 5 2nd. Hour Examination over 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 3rd. Hour Examination over 11, 12, 13, and 14 4th. Hour Examination over 15 and 16 1st lab test over 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 9 2nd lab test over 13 and 14 3rd lab test over 15, 16, and 17 To determine the semester average I will add the 6 highest of the above 7 grades. In my class, the final examination is optional. If you are satisfied with the above semester average then you have no need to take the final examination. If you are not satisfied with the above average, you may take the final exam to raise your average. If your final examination grade is higher than any two of the above grades, than this final grade will substitute for those two and thus raise your average. A make-up test will be given near the end of the semester for any student who missed a scheduled examination and who does not want that missed exam to be dropped. FINAL EXAMINATION over material after last lecture exam All students are expected to attend each class session. During the semester four (4) unexcused absences may result in an administrative withdraw. Students should tell me if they are to be absent for two (2) or more sessions The best way to ensure of getting a withdraw from class is to do it yourself. I cannot guarantee a W grade if you leave it to me. Cheating on tests is not permitted. Efforts will be taken to prevent cheating. My office hours at each campus are before and after class. 7 7 FINAL EXAM Instructional M ethods My instructional methods are lectures with some overheads. In the laboratory, I gave an extra credit 5 question quiz after each laboratory exercise W hen the semester ends, these quizzes can add an amount to your grade average that may raise your grade to a significent extent. I give a word list for all chapters/topics for this course. My exams are based upon these words and terms. These word list will guide my lecture and guide your study for exams.
