SCC RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM PRE-ADMISSION CONFERENCE Radiography Take A Look Inside

Thank you for your interest in the SCC Radiography Program. This online pre-admission conference is designed to provide information about the program, program requirements, and application instructions.

Pre-Admission Conference: Non-Discrimination Statement Admission to the program is open to all qualified students and is based on a point system. Refer to slides 33 & 34 for the current points system. The minimum cumulative GPA for program admission is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Neither Somerset Community College nor the radiography program discriminates on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, religion, martial status, sex, [sexual orientation], or handicap, in employment, educational programs or activities as set forth in Title IX of the Educational Amendment of 1972, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Pre-Admission Conference: Non-Discrimination Statement Radiography at the technical level involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of radiologic functions. Therefore, in order to be considered for admission or to be retained in the program after admission, all applicants should possess the following technical standards: (please see next slide)

Pre-Admission Conference: Technical Standards Radiography involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of radiological technical functions. Therefore, all applicants should possess: Sufficient visual acuity, such as is needed in the accurate preparation and administration of contrast media and for the observation necessary for patient assessment and nursing care; Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors, stethoscopes, intravenous infusion pumps, fire alarms, etc.;

Pre-Admission Conference: Technical Standards (cont.) Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills including the manipulation of equipment, positioning and lifting patients required in meeting health needs related to radiologic technology; Sufficient communication skills (speech, reading, writing) to interact with individuals and to communicate their needs promptly and effectively, as may be necessary in the patient s/client s interest, and; Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care for individuals.

INSTRUCTIONS Read all material in this online Radiography Pre-Admission Conference Obtain a Program Application and Statement of Understanding from Tanya Cowan, Alton Blakley Building, Room 301 (Somerset Campus North) or Kathy Howard, Building 3, Room 214 (Laurel Campus North). Along with the Application and Statement of Understanding, submit all required documents, as outlined in the pre-admission conference, by the deadline.

Pre-Admission Conference A radiographer is a health professional who uses radiation to produce medical images of internal human anatomy. In some cases, the radiographer performs medical procedures that evaluate physiological functions. Medical radiographs and other medical imaging procedures are used by the physician to diagnose and treat human disease. The Radiography Program at SCC is a five semester Associate Degree Program, which combines academic and laboratory courses with high technology clinical instruction. After graduation, a qualified student is eligible for national (ARRT) certification and KY state licensure. A prospective radiography student is advised that the ARRT examination board may not accept a student s application if he/she has been convicted of a felony or major misdemeanor.

Pre-Admission Conference The application deadline for the program is April 28, Courses in progress during the spring semester will be used in the admission process. Submit the Statement of Understanding, Program Application, and other needed documents as outlined in the conference in order to be eligible for the selective admission application process. The applicant should receive notification of either acceptance, nonacceptance, or alternate status by June 1 st.

Pre-Admission Conference Prior to beginning the radiography program the student must have satisfactorily completed the first Anatomy & Physiology course (BIO 137) and College Algebra (MAT 150). The more general education classes completed the better the chances of being accepted. It is particularly beneficial to have completed the four math and science courses, since grades of an A or B are awarded additional points. An ACT score is needed for the radiography application process. We do not accept COMPASS scores. A minimum composite score of 20 on the ACT or residual ACT is required to receive points on the point system for admission into the radiography program.

Pre-Admission Conference Applications do not carry over from one admission cycle to the next. If you are not accepted and wish to apply for the next year s class, you must complete the application process again.

Pre-Admission Conference: Program Mission The mission of the SCC Radiography Program is to provide a quality affordable education in the field of radiologic technology. Using theory and performance-based instruction, the program s faculty strives to provide an educational environment which equips the student with entry level radiography skills, as well as strengthening critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.

Pre-Admission Conference: Program Goals Goal 1: The student will demonstrate expansion of knowledge acquired prior to the program in general education courses. Goal 2: The student will exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skills. Goal 3: The student will utilize oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Goal 4: The student will demonstrate professional growth and development. Goal 5: The student will develop clinical performance skills and competencies of an entry level radiographer.

Pre-Admission Conference: Testing Requirements All first-time students with no previous college and those students who have not completed freshman English or college algebra, MUST take the college assessment test prior to advising and registration. The only exception to this policy is those students who scored a 20 or higher in reading and math, and 18 or higher in English on the National ACT. The ACT (or ACT Residual) is used as one of the program s admission assessment tools; a COMPASS score cannot be used as a substitute. Please call the Testing Center at (606) , for information on placement testing.

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure Students are admitted to the Radiography Program every fall semester. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required procedures are completed and the required documents are submitted to the college prior to the specified deadline. A list of these procedures and documents are as follows (1-6):

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (1) Complete an official application to Somerset Community College online at If you need Admissions assistance, please contact the GO! KCTCS STUDENT SERVICES CENTER at (855) or *Note: This application form is for admission to the College only; it is not an application to the Radiography Program.

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (2) Complete the American College Test (ACT) exam and have results sent to the admissions office by the application deadline. Allow 4-6 weeks from the test date for the ACT results to be returned to Somerset Community College. Students who have not completed their ACT prior to enrolling at Somerset Community College will be required to take the COMPASS exam, for placement purposes, while their ACT results are pending. COMPASS testing is available at the Testing Center, located in the Strunk Learning Resource Center on the Somerset North Campus. Please call the Testing Center at (606) for testing dates and times.

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (3) First-time College students must request and submit an official high school transcript or GED certificate as part of the application process for the college.

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (4) Request that the registrar of each institution previously attended forward to the SCC Admissions Office an official transcript of all college work completed or work in progress. The transcript must be forwarded to: Admissions Office, Somerset Community College, 808 Monticello Street, Somerset, KY *Note: A sealed transcript issued to a student or submitted by a student will NOT be accepted by the Somerset Community College s Admissions Office.

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (5) Read all material presented in the online pre-admission conference

Pre-Admission Conference: Application Procedure (cont.) (6) At the end of this online Pre-Admission Conference, the student must obtain the Program Application and Statement of Understanding from Tanya Cowan, room 301 of the Alton Blakley Building on the Somerset Campus or Kathy Howard, Room 214 of Building 3 on the Laurel Campus North. The signed Program Application, Statement of Understanding and required supporting documents must be hand delivered to Ms. Cowan or Ms. Howard by 4:30 p.m. on April 28, 2017.

Pre-Admission Conference: Program Admission Admission to the radiography program is competitive. The number of students accepted into the program is limited because a portion of the teaching is done in hospitals that cannot accommodate large numbers of students. Additionally, enrollment in the radiography program may be restricted due to limited laboratory facilities or faculty and program resources. Candidate selection is based on a points system (see points system information on slides 33 & 34). The program admissions committee will select the candidates receiving the highest points total from the applicant pool for that semester. All candidates will receive one of three notifications; a letter of acceptance, a letter of non-acceptance, or a letter of alternate status. All candidates accepted into the program are expected to attend an orientation session scheduled during the week prior to the beginning of the semester of admission.

Pre-Admission Conference: Admission Committee Members Membership on the Radiography Program Admissions Committee may include any or all of the following persons: Program Coordinator Program Clinical Coordinator Faculty Member Associate Dean of Health Sciences Admissions Officer

Pre-Admission Conference: Selection Process Selection of students for the program will be made by the President or the president s designee, after considering the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. An applicant is considered a strong candidate if the following qualifications are met: Applicants with an ACT composite score of 20 or above. Applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the required general education courses completed (minimum of 21 hours), or the student s overall GPA, which ever is greater. 25 Pre-Admission Conference: Post Admission Requirements Students will be notified of CPR, immunizations, Hepatitis B, liability insurance, background check and drug screening and any additional immunization requirements after being accepted into the program. All requirements outlined in the acceptance packets must be met in order to remain enrolled in the radiography program. Documents of fulfilling requirements must be provided. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in dismissal from the program.

Pre-Admission Conference: Accreditation Somerset Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools (SACS). The Radiography Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)

After completing the competency based education curriculum, a qualified student is eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification examination. A prospective radiography student is advised that the ARRT examination board may not accept a student s application if there has been a conviction of a felony or major misdemeanor, including drug possession, assault, DUIs and/or public intoxication. Students who have been convicted of, or pled guilty to, or plead no lo contendere to a crime, may request a pre-application review of the violation in order to obtain a ruling on the impact of their eligibility for examination. A special preapplication review form may be requested from the ARRT office.
