1 Science For the future you want
2 SCIENCE We offer a range of science courses that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of career paths in the physical and chemical engineering sectors as well as the biochemical, life and food science industries. You can choose to study at a range of different levels, whether that s taking your first steps with an introductory course, gaining a broad range of employerrelevant skills on our NC programmes or aiming straight for university with our Access courses, you will find the ideal programme for you, Our Science department offers you the opportunity to study in purposebuilt laboratory facilities, supporting the development of your general and specialist practical skills, whilst enhancing your theoretical understanding of Science. We also offer a range of opportunities to enhance your studies, such as volunteering in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Ambassador Programme - a UK-wide scheme to encourage young people to study STEM subjects. Our curriculum portfolio has been designed to allow students transparency in their scientific studies, we have an expanding range of articulation routes to universities after completion of the HNC in Applied Science and to that within industry. The academic team are dedicated to your career goals and aspirations, they are on hand to offer expert help, support and advice, both within and outside of the classroom. We pride ourselves on the positive relationships we build with our students and we will guide you on your way to your future career in the sciences. RYAN QUINN CURRICULUM LEADER OF SCIENCE When I came to Edinburgh from Spain, I knew I wanted to study biomedical sciences, when I got in contact with universities they recommended Applied Science HNC as this would provide a great basis for my learning. This course allows you to explore every element of science, giving you a great taster and all around experience. The lecturers were very helpful and able to answer all the queries I had regarding the course. NOELIA PELEGRINA APPLIED SCIENCE HNC I decided to study Applied Science NC Level 5 for something new and fresh compared to my previous employment. This course allowed me to learn new skills and knowledge about the different core sciences. I enjoyed covering the various subjects and learning brand new information which I previously hadn t covered. VAUGHAN CROSBY APPLIED SCIENCE NC LEVEL 5
3 SPOTLIGHT MONIKA RAVICKYTE // APPLIED SCIENCE NC LEVEL 5 I chose to study at Edinburgh College because I wanted to broaden and develop my knowledge in science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as my laboratory skills. The college helped me gain experience and supported me when I needed it. I enjoyed learning about stem cell research, GM foods, human DNA profiling and many other scientific areas. During my course, my favourite experiments were culturing cells, titration, calculating the energy released from fuels and measuring the angle of reflection. The use of various equipment at the college was great. Most of all I liked using microscopes and using agar plates for culturing microorganisms. Studying at Edinburgh College has helped me gain a lot of confidence, meet new people and help me think about my future options. My course gave me a great foundation in learning sciences and set me on the right course to progress further. Upon completion at college I am looking to study Biological Sciences (Genetics) at The University of Edinburgh. I have really enjoyed exploring subjects such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It was great getting hands-on within the laboratories and conducting experiments in a more practical setting. Science is very varied and is a great foundation for different career routes.
4 SPOTLIGHT CAMILLA SCARLETT // ACCESS TO LIFE SCIENCE SWAP This course taught me that you can achieve things that appear to be daunting at first if you are willing to put the effort in. With this I then developed my selfesteem, confidence and motivation. CAMILLA SCARLETT ACCESS TO LIFE SCIENCE SWAP I ve always been interested in many areas of Science and had a thirst to understand these fascinating topics more. I didn t have a clear idea of exactly what area of Science I wanted to go on to study but Biology is definitely where I found my passion throughout this course. I really enjoyed doing Microbiology. It was exciting using a microscope for the first time and analysing bacterial colonies that I had created. The equipment required for titrations was very precise and specialised. I enjoyed the overall experience of learning and being at college. Meeting great people, discovering new things and the sense of achievement after such a heavy workload. I ve started studying an honours degree in Biological Science at The University of Edinburgh. My hopes are that I continue succeeding academically during university and that it will enable me to discover exactly which area of biology I wish to specialise in. I think that it s fantastic that there is such a demand for women in STEM subjects at the moment. Another step in the right direction for gender equality. Hopefully this will encourage women that these subjects are full of fantastic opportunities for everyone and that no subject is limited to anyone because of their gender.
